I get the sense that I've seen it somewhere before, like one of the pre-Raphaelites painted it or something. It's a portrait of a lady (had to say it!) with her head tilted to one side. Anyone out there recognize it? Are any of the other paintings taken from "real" life? Ninja Member posted April 11, 1999 09:22 PM I think you'll find that a lot of them are based on RL paintings. Most of the files are called „ripoff#.gif", which hints at their origin. One is even called „Davinci.gif". Here’s my list: banner5.gif banner6.gif Davinci.gif Intrude.gif Paint1.gif Picnic.gif ripoff1.gif ... ripoff16.gif „Ripoff11.gif" looks like Salisbury Cathedral. It’s a little different from Constable’s painting as far as I know it, but he’s done a number of versions. „Ripoff12.gif" looks like a Constable, too. And I’m sure I’ve seen „ripoff2.gif", a skull, before. The picture you mean is probably „ripoff9.gif". It looks like one of those paintings that are often called pre-Raphaelite, but I don’t think it’s the real thing - probably younger. Do you think the design team used actual paintings unchanged, or did they use actual paintings as models for their own work? Obviously some of the game paintings are the original work of LG (the Master Builder defeating the Trickster, for example) although many of them seem to have been modified from religious iconography. I couldn't even verify the Constable (although I'm pretty sure here). As soon as I find the time (tomorrow maybe) I'm going to check the real Arts History library at my uni. To tell you the truth, Ithel, I never really believed the lady was a Waterhouse. It was just a wild guess. Another would be Albert Moore. But I guess he used different colours. Agreed, the painting looks a bit pre-Raphaelite, but it lacks that angelic feel, the setting is more antique than medieval, and the colours should be more technicolor. That's why I think it was done much later, near the Fin de Siècle or Art Nouveau period. Guess I have to expand my search beyond English painters. I'm so glad LGS put the paintings in; they add much to the atmosphere. BTW, Bafford's is not a good place to watch 'the lady' - she's upside down there! All the paintings interest me, but it's that one of the woman that stirs up vague memories. I'll have to check our library, too. Mokkis--you're right! Not everyone tries to forget nasty things - some people tend to remember them, to become obsessive about them. It has something to do with the word: "Put a finger into the open wound." Coot Member posted April 27, 1999 08:16 AM I am going to try to give my best analysis of the period and or painter for the ones I know. This is based on the list provided by Kyloe. Unfortunately I do not have the books (or the time or the knowledge) to do in-depth research, but if somebody does please let me know if my guesses are correct! Banner5 and Banner6 are definitely Late Gothic stuff -- they look a lot like the works of Giotto and Duccio though I unfortunately do not have anything exhaustive on either. Say 13th to early 14th century ; possibly as late as early fifteenth but if so not by anyone good... I think the one called "Davinci" is by ... Anyway I don't have the name of the work yet. "Intrude: looks like it could be by one of the more fantastic Renaissance era painters like Bosch, but it is so small I can't make an accurate guess. "Paint1" appears to have been done for the game. "Picnic" is basically a modern cartoon on a classic theme. Maybe it is by somebody famous but I wouldn't know. "Ripoff1" is a baroque still life from the Low Countries, probably 17th century or a bit later. "Ripoff2" is KILLING me and will continue to do so until I remember who did it. "Ripoff3" is by Caravaggio, who is my favorite all time painter and deserves beatification if not deification. "Ripoff4" I'm still thinking about. I would put it in the 17th-18th century, Dutch or French. I am trying to find a book that has the larger work (this is only a piece of a huge battle scene if I recall correctly). "Ripoff5", "Ripoff8", "Ripoff10", "Ripoff13", "Ripoff14" are fantasy / comic book / modern graphic art stuff and I have no idea. "Ripoff6" is I think a Vermeer but I could be wrong. I would place it in the High to Late Renaissance ; it couldn't be later (Mannerist) because the colors are too sombre (I think). "Ripoff7" is ... some lady in black. I think it's Spanish and Baroque but I'm not sure. "Ripoff9" is just so VERY turn of the century. No idea who. "Ripoff11" is unknown to me and I will bow to the wisom of those who call it Salisbury Cathedral. "Ripoff12" looks like a baroque landscape, similar to some Rembrandts. "Ripoff15" is a famous Early to High Renaissance portrait (characterized by a random square window in the background with an arbitrary bit of landscape and architecture -- this was all the rage for a while with portrait painters). "Ripoff16" idem. I think I may figure these out given more time, but this is the best I can do.
