First, a forewarning. The following post is going to be filled with a lot of musing and introspection on observations I've made over the years, so chances are good it's will bore at least half of you to tears. Basically what I'm doing here is inflicting a self absorbed blog post upon the boards. Yeah. I know. Sounds like a kick in the pants. That said, you should all read it anyway, because I'm still holding a grudge over you people not letting me into the super secret TTLG Kru IRC channel back in the day, and I feel you all owe me one.

So follow the fuck along.

This is the story roughly a decade in the making, give or take. See, since I was a kid, I've always liked to draw and make cool stuff (you...sit your ass down in that goddamn chair). Pencils, crayons, Lego's, I loved it all. Problem was, I was never very good at it. It was something I wanted to do, but I didn't have that je ne sas quoi. Any attempt I made to do something at least a little realistic looking only met with failure and frustration. When my middle school art teacher told me that if you couldn't draw at least decently by the time you were 12, you'd never be able to, it pretty much cemented the deal for me. I relegated myself to the ranks of the wannabes.

Wahh! Pity party! TRAGEDY! Don't worry. I'm not gonna sink into the depths of despair and start cutting myself for attention (that's what this post is for). Life was pretty good for me even after discovering this sad fact about myself. I mean hell, I got to play with a few naked boobs in high school. And they were hot boobs on hot people, so I can't complain too much. Things could've been considerably worse for me.

I mean I could've been that kid in my class who was born with a tooth in his forehead....that grew!

So cut to about 10 years ago. Some weird random guy no one had ever heard of before named Fingernail gets this goofy idea in his head about making some bullcrap Thief mod for Doom 3. The collective Thief community were all reeling from the supposed lack of an editor for TDS, so it was bound to happen sooner or later. For some reason, despite my apparent and complete absence of artistic ability, I sign up for the mod. I had a few textures I could donate, so I figured why the hell not. I won't be able to contribute directly, but it'll be a fun experience.

Very long story short, I end up being able to do...well...some stuff, but not as much as I want to do. I'm frustrated at my lack of skill, and I somehow end up getting voted in as the art lead over someone who can actually fucking draw. I end up doing the cowardly thing, which is freak out and bail on everyone there. I still don't think they've totally forgiven me for that.

But my leaving left me with something. A love for 3D. I wasn't at all practiced at it then, but I figured it was so exacting and mechanical, even someone like me could eventually get good at it. Well, yes and no. It still takes artistic ability to model, which was something I wasn't good at it. Frustration continued again. I couldn't do what I wanted to do. It seemed so damn hard, almost impossible. I couldn't wrap my head around what seemed to be the most basic things. I dropped it...but for some reason, I occasionally come back to it. I'd dabble. Drop. Dabble. Drop. Years pass. Then one day, I realized I was getting kinda good at it. Things that were super difficult that'd take me forever to do were an afterthought now. I could look at shapes and copy them out. I could add stuff and make it look elegant. I was actually getting decent.

Then I picked up Photoshop and started practicing with that. I needed some textures for my models, and it was the best way to do it. The same thing happened there. I sucked at it at first, but realized the more time I spent with it, the better I got. Nowadays, I'm actually capable of doing moderate amounts of painting with it.

I guess it was about 3 years ago I suddenly had this epiphany. My middle school art teacher, who I based so much of my opinions of art around, was basically full of shit. Artistic ability isn't something you're born with, gifted from on high. It isn't something you either have or you don't. Like anything else, it's something you can learn. All you need is the will and the drive to learn it.

...and probably taste, but god knows I don't have any of that.

To get to the actual subject of the thread, I've been making this neat thing over the last few months. Pretty much like every project I've started, I reached a certain point and got stuck, and ended up dropping it to practice on something else in the meantime. This makes me about the flakiest person in the world, but the whole process works for me for some reason. I'll fool around on other things, then come back to an old project later, suddenly and magically able to finish what I wasn't able to before.

This time though, I came to realize my skill set is about uneven as hell, and I needed to do something about it.

I needed to learn how to draw. Return to the one thing that made me throw this whole pity party for myself in the first place. This time though, I wasn't looking at it as some mystical thing, rather just something I needed a lot of practice in before I get good at it.

I picked up a few books (including one that did nothing but reinforce my hard fought beliefs stated above), and headed into this brave new world of lead on paper.

This thread is basically going to be my diary of what I've done thus far (and as a way to brag). You're all welcome to join in and criticize all you want. Since I'm not getting feedback otherwise, I'd actually appreciate it.

And here we go...

This is one of the exercises from the book I'm reading (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_1.JPG). Before it teaches you anything, it makes you draw a self portrait from a mirror, a picture of someone drawn from memory, and a picture of your hand. This is the self portrait. I've apparently got a big fat head.

This is the memory picture (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_2.JPG). It's of a woman I know. Looks nothing like her, and she'd kill me if she saw it.

Hand portrait (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_3.JPG). I'm glad my hand actually doesn't look like that.

Vases/Face (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_4.JPG). I'm not gonna go indepth with what the book tries to do here. It's designed to make your brain lock up. I didn't do it right, but I already know that feeling quite well from my previous years experience.

Upside down line drawing 1 (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_5.JPG). These next three shots are me attempting the same exercise again and again. It makes you draw a picture upside down. I had to redo it because I never could frame it right.

Upside down line drawing 2 (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_6.JPG). Second attempt.

Upside down line drawing 3 (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_7.JPG). Third attempt. Would've turned out pretty well if I drew everything in proportion.

Upside down horse and knight (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_8.JPG). This one weirds me out. When I was working on it, I thought it was coming out horribly, hence why I call it "terrible horse attempt". Now that I'm looking back on it, it's actually pretty good. I should've finished it.

A drawing done in the style you drew in as a child (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_9.JPG). Yeah. The book's kinda full of some weird pop psychobabble. It's supposed to be a step towards making you recognize when you're drawing with learned symbols rather than actually drawing what you see. Still fun though.

Hand portrait 2 (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_10.JPG). I broke away from the book at this point and decided to redo my hand. Came out much better this time, though my fingers are too skinny.

Hand Trace (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Hand_Trace.JPG)...and back to the book. I'm supposed to trace my hand through a plate of plastic and a viewfinder. I don't have all the equipment needed to go to the next step, so I went off on a bunch of side projects from here.

A bottle of water on my desk (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_11.JPG). I had to do a lot of doodles to get this one done well. I'll show some of them later. But first...

Slightly improved bottle (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_12.JPG).

Some of the doodles (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Drawing_13.JPG). That cap in the middle of the bottom page? I drew it a week ago. Turned out looking like crap, so I practiced a bit to try and get it down by drawing ellipses and cylinders on a few pages. About two days ago, I discovered shading and perspective seemingly at random. I redrew the same cap on the top page (you'll spot it), then drew that other cap on the bottom just yesterday. A week of practice apparently makes for a big difference.

...don't ask me why I keep drawing bottle caps. I think I've got the OCD.

This is it. Since this thread has gone on too long as is, and I haven't done anything worth showing off today, I'll leave it here. If you want to comment, feel free. If not, I'll post here again eventually, and probably talk enough to make up for three people.

but more along the lines of a James Carville. In fact, just model James Carville's head and upper body, wering a suit and tie, glasses, and that sleazy grin on his face.

Anyone game? I'd prefer rather low-poly so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Yeah, so I've set up his candle in my mission file, but the flame particle is sitting halfway into the candle. Not only that, the torch flame yellow is a tad too big for the candle in the first place. So anyway, in his screenshot from the zip, it shows a particle attachment to TorchFlameYellow, but I can't see what the Data of the link is. Would anyone be able to help me in adjusting the position of it? Obviously changing joint won't do anything, because this is an object and not an ai, right?

Problem playing Shadows of the Metal Age

let me just say I am not very good with technology. Disclaimer, I have Thief 2 from Good Old Games. Ok, so I downloading Thief Tx2, and when they asked where I wanted to put it. So i went to the GOG progam file, when to Thief 2, and saved it there. Everything went well until it came to actually playing it, I clicked on the shortcut and the screen goes dark and I hear the tantalizing sound of I think water, then it goes back to my normal screen and I get a message saying "Thief 2 Metal Age has stopped working" and thats it. Now I can play thief 2 normally perfectly fine, its just this that doesn't work. I tired running as an administrator and no luck. Please help. And assume I don't know anything about computers because I am a novice.

My second Problem involves a fan made mission. I downloaded Darkloader and then I downloaded Calendra's Legacy: A winter's eve. on the Darkloader screen it shows the fan made mission, I clicked Install only and it said it worked, but when I click play i just get normal Thief 2. How do I use it. Again, assume idiocy.

Thanks

Deus Ex Soundtrack

Hi all! I've already asked this question in regards to Thief 1/2, and I felt it was appropriate to do the same for Deus Ex.

How would I directly extract the Deus Ex soundtrack? It works differently than the Thief soundtrack, and I'm not overly familiar with the process.

I currently have the music file copied, but the music is listed as .umx, which my computer will not read?

Any advice? I appreciate everyone's time!

I currently have the music file copied, but the music is listed as .umx, which my computer will not read?

Any advice? I appreciate everyone's time!

Thief 2 Haunted Crypt FM

Hey guys, lately I've been going through FM's and replaying the ones I loved long ago. However, there is one fan mission that still eludes me. I can't remember the name of the FM itself, but I can provide some details in hopes of someone having the answer. It is a TMA FM and it's set in a huge crypt. There are hordes of undead just outside of Hammerite and Mechanist outposts. You eventually find some Thieves later on as well. I loved this mission because you could easily shoot one noisemaker and watch chaos ensue. I can't remember the objectives exactly, but hopefully the few details I've provided will ring a bell for someone.

Yes I have looked through this list here:

*Raptorll: Are the old non-City Watch factions going to return--such as the Pagans, Hammerites, and Keepers--if only to give life to The City?*

Because it's a reinvention, we are not going back to the old factions. We want new factions. The last story didn't give us a lot of options. We wanted to take a step back and make sure we have everything right for a new, fresh experience within this universe. There may be some references back to keep the following happy, but it will be all new groups.

The two new factions are the Baron and he has The Watch. We also have a dissident group called the Raven. There is a political conflict that Garrett finds himself in the middle of. There will be characters associated with the group that will reveal themselves within the game.

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75837&highlight=particles+on+garrett

However, that's for an actual particle attached to Garrett that would be constant using a particleattachment link. Problem is, what I need is a link that attaches a BreathSpout (essentially an emitter that is intended to emit a particle so that it looks like AIs are breathing in a cold environment) so that it looks like Garrett is breathing every few seconds. I tried a few different links to Garrett, but upon going into game mode it either doesn't emit at all or the breath is just sitting in one spot in the world, not attached. Any idea on how I might achieve this, or is it impossible?

I thought that it was related to the burrick for some reason, so I tested it on a thief, but he acts just the same. He seems to be aware of my presence, but I can hit him to death, he doesn't become aggressive at all.

Giving them the metaprop individually works just fine though. Is there an explanation for this?

The Daft Project - A Parody

*Broken Glass Studios Presents:
Thief: The Daft Project*

Chapter 1
A Keeper's training
=======================================

"The essence of balance is to not give a rip about anything. To embrace a cause, to grow fond or spiteful, is to lose a lot of time that could be spent napping or watching Jefferson re-runs, after which, somebody is going to ask you to do some work. Don’t be that guy."
-- Mayar, 3rd Keeper of All Games Containing Dice

I was a latch-key kid. No family meals together, no little league baseball. Playing Nintendo 64 and stealing money from my mom’s purse to keep from having to take my own lunch to school. One night I saw a man...folks just passed him by like he wasn't there. I figured he was a vagrant or something, so I tried to avoid him.

"Hey!" I yelled when he grabbed me by the arm.
"Can you do me a favor?"
"Look buddy, I’m busy..."
"What is your name, boy?"
"Garrett."
"I really need you to do something for me."
"Look, old man, I'm not coming to your car for some candy. I've learned my lesson…"
"To see a Keeper is not an easy thing. Especially one who does not wish to be seen.”
“A what?” I asked.
“A Keeper.”
“What do you Keep?”
“Uh…we keep…uh secrets…and stuff.”
“What kind of secrets?”
“Secrets about the City and the different factions,” he whispered conspiratorially, “we have a need for those as gifted as yourself.”
“Are you a pimp? Because you look like this guy my sister once-”
“No, no, of course not! Listen, if you've grown tired of how you live, then follow me, and we will show you a different way."
"Ah, yeah, whatever…look, I’m meeting some guys at the skate park, but I'll think about it"
I took off at top speed, but when I got to the skate park, the guys had already gone and it was getting dark.

The old man found me on the way home and pestered me until I followed him. It was the beginning of a very long lasting pain in my ass....

“Hey, unlock this door or I’m calling the police!” Garrett yelled, beating on the door. He was standing in the bottom of what looked to be a tower that rose several stories into the dim above him. There wasn’t much to see, but he found himself wondering who picked out the hideous orange, pink, and green décor. It looked like something out of a Scooby-Doo fever dream.

“Welcome young Garrett,” came a sudden voice over his shoulder.

“HOLY SHIT!!” he screamed, spinning around. “You can't just sneak up on people like that! I almost punched you in the...”

But there was no one there.

The voice continued, “In the nearby rooms I will instruct you in the various skills you will need to survive.”

“Hey that’s a neat trick,” Garrett said looking around, “where are you?”

“You cannot see me. I am a Keeper.”

“Oh yeah – so I heard,” he looked around a bit, “wait…is that you up there?” he pointed at a figure perched on the walkway above him.

“No, that is not me.”

“Sure it is. Otherwise, how would you have known where I was pointing?”

Silence fell in the dark tower.

“Okay, it’s me. Could you just focus please?”

“Yeah, sure. Uh…what was that about surviving? What exactly do I need to survive?”

“The life of a Keeper. Or if you choose to blow this popsicle stand, I guess the skills could come in useful as a master thief.”

“A thief?! Look, if this is about vandalizing that snack machine outside the school gym…”

“No, this is not about the snack machine.”

“Really? Oh…ok then.” he scratched his head. The snack machine had been Basso’s fault anyway…

“I also deny any involvement in that incident with the cheerleader’s lockers…”

“This is not about the lockers. We already know who did that and he is being disciplined accordingly. Please stay in the entrance area to each room while I explain the room’s purpose,” the Keeper said.

“Sure, fine.”

A pink door slid open, exposing an even more garishly decorated hallway. “When you are ready to begin your lessons,” continued the Keeper, “proceed down this hallway to the first room.”

Garrett emerged into a dimly lit room filled with a large group of robed people. They all brandished various cleaning tools, some fingering a broom or mop, others ominously shaking cans of furniture polish. They didn’t seem to notice his presence yet.

“You must learn to avoid work,” his instructor explained, “When you see an instructor moving toward you with the broom, quickly hide in the shadows. Try to reach the other side without being noticed.”

The small door before him opened. Beams of light streamed from the windows high above, creating shadows throughout the room. Garrett reflected that while they were dark, they did not look deadly at all.

“Can I get a little help here?” one called out, peering into the darkness, “Anybody?”

“I’m looking for volunteers to clean out the basement,” cried another.

Garrett hugged the wall and quietly crept along the perimeter of the room to the other side, unnoticed by the group of Keepers.

“Well done, they did not catch you. When you are ready to continue, proceed down this corridor.” Another pink door slid open.

Down another hideously colored hallway, he entered a room in which small groups of Keepers lounged around tables playing...Scrabble?

“You must learn to engage in board games. Join a game of Scrabble and win.”

I hate Scrabble thought Garrett. He noticed that the floor was covered in a combination of soft carpet and sheet metal. Another glance at the Keepers and Garrett realized they were so absorbed in their games that they hadn’t noticed him. They were arguing back and forth over the meanings of words and syntax. He traversed the room, keeping to the carpeted areas and eventually reached the platform on the other side. The door was locked.

“Hey, what gives?” he asked his guide.

“You did not win a game of Scrabble, you just sneaked through the room.”

“I hate Scrabble. I think I should get extra points for being sneaky enough to avoid getting sucked into a board game.”

The instructor was silent as he considered this a moment.

“You know,” he said eventually in a lowered tone, “I’m not very fond of Scrabble myself. I guess I could let it slide just this once…”

The door slid open. “This hallway will lead to your next task.”

He made his way to a small courtyard. Nearby was a table with some throwing darts and a ping pong paddle.

“Now pick up your weapons,” the voice instructed.

“Uh…weapons?” Garrett asked.

“A Keeper’s worth is found in his eye to hand coordination and cat like reflexes. These tools will help you develop your skills.”

“Is there anything to eat around here?”

“Yes. In a moment you’ll get an apple.”

“An apple?”

“Yes. An apple.”

“That sucks.”

“Yes. Yes it does.”

Garrett grabbed the stuff and found some targets in the yard.

“Try readying your darts. Make sure you draw all the way back, or your shot will not have full power. No no, your standing wrong! Line you body up with the…”

Garrett nailed the target on the bulls eye, then quickly landed another a hair’s breadth underneath it.

“Ah…very well then,” the voice continued, “now try readying your ping pong paddle.”

Garrett turned to find a table behind him in the courtyard.

“Try a few practice swings before you take on a live opponent.”

“I know how to play ping pong.”

On cue, a guy in a white tennis outfit strode sullenly to the table from a small corridor to Garrett’s left.

“You’re my live opponent? What’s with the getup?”

The man’s droned, “I want to play tennis, but they say it requires too much exercise, so they make me test the new recruits in ping pong. Whoopee…”

“You mean you stand around in that hallway all day and then play ping pong whenever they want you to?”

“Pretty much. There’s a basketball court back there too,” he whispered, “but I don’t think they know about it. I shoot hoops sometimes. There's some reading material too, but I don't understand a word of it.” He raised his voice to a normal tone, looking around nervously, “But hey, isn't ping pong great? So you want me to teach you some ping pong? I love ping pong.”

“Sure,” said Garrett serving up the ball and striking his opponent between the eyes. The instructor dropped like a sack of Burrick dung.

“Very good,” said the voice, ignoring the groaning white clad ping pong trainer, “would you care for some refreshment young Garrett?”

“If it’s that apple you mentioned, no thanks. Got any beer?”

"No, but let me see..."

Garrett head some rummaging around and refridgerator doors opening and closing.

"Okay, we have some mayo - questionable expiration date - a limp stalk of celery, and some Chinese takeout."

"I'll pass."

“Moving on then. Take the key and the healing potion from that table over there.”

“A healing potion huh?” He picked it up and noticed that the crude label declaring “HEALING POTION” was peeling away at the edge. He tore it away to reveal the print on the bottle beneath.

“Hey, this is just Red Bull!”

“But a very special type of Red Bull. A healing type of Red Bull.”

“Really? Because it just looks like regular Red Bull to me.”

“Okay, you got me," the healer said dejectedly. "It's just Red Bull. It doesn't heal. It just numbs the pain until eventually you drink so many that you die from coronary malfunction. Can we move on please?”

Garrett handed it to the ping pong guy who was trying to steady himself on the table while clutching his head.

“And the key?” Garrett asked.

“For the metal door,” said the voice, “The door is locked, but this key will open it.”

“Brilliant.”

Garrett unlocked it and walked down the hall.

“Now you will learn new movements.” A rope hung from an overhead beam, where he could climb to a walkway straddling a small canal.

“Climbing a rope can be exhausting work,” the Keeper told him, “but far less laborious than helping to trim the hedges and such. Climb the rope by jumping…”

Garrett was already up top admiring the view. I wonder if I could get onto these rooftops from here…

“Ah…er…you’re a quick learner.”

“These are retarded lessons.”

“True. Now, you must learn to play Twister. Place you’re right hand on the blue dot, and your left leg on the …”

Garrett left the voice behind as he leaped across the canal, pulled himself up onto the next ledge, and slid down the rope on the other end.

Enough with this craziness, he thought, pushing his way through the exit door, I’m going home.

Just then, a green sparkle at the end of the hallway caught his eye. A beautiful green goblet with gold inlay called out to him.

That could pay for the new Goldeneye game. And then some.

Kleptomania seized him, and he started for the prize.

Just then, a Keeper turned the corner pushing a mop bucket. Garrett ducked into the shadow of the nearest doorway as the cloaked man passed him without taking notice.

He crept quietly to the end of the hall, his steps silent and swift, and tucked the goblet into his jacket pocket.

Chapter 1
A Keeper's training
=======================================

The Keepers have been training me to be one of them…but I’ve found other uses for their skills…

Hey gang, this is a blog post I did earlier today about the franchise. Nothing new or exciting, just my thoughts on my personal relationship with the game over the years. I'm also trying to promote my new blog for writerly/online presence purposes, so I'd appreciate it if you would check it out. There may be some other random things on there that grab your interest as well. I plan to have several more in-depth installments about T4 info as it's released, and probably more than that once it's out. Either way, hope you enjoy the read.
