Yes. I have both FarCry: Instincts & FarCry: Instincts-Evolution for Xbox 1. Evolution is simply a stand-alone expansion that consists of the 'extra campaign' you mentioned. I think it is about 6 hours, iirc.

Anyway, the main campaign (the one from the original FarCry: Instincts) is absolutely incredible, all things considered i.e. last-gen, console fps game, and how well it has aged. It arguably has the best graphics of any game on the Xbox.

They did a marvelous job of taking CryTech's original game and bringing the experience to consoles. the visuals, huge draw distance, excellent sniping, multiple vehicles, satisfying combat, dynamic, largely unscripted gameplay (you can load a scene 100 times and never quite get the same result).

They also managed to improve in several areas. The stealth is actually functioning properly and as a result, becomes a viable, and oft-used tactic. The sense of freedom, alternate routes, solutions to missions and general open-endedness that was teased in the original has actually come to being in this title. The maps are HUGE, there a at least 2 ways to get to your next objective, the insta-kill helicopters that basically served as invisible walls are history. Now, if you see it you can go there. Also, I have come across several spots well off the beaten path that are not 'on the way' to where you are headed with enemies and pick-ups and whatnot. So, the islands don't feel like they were 'designed' or simply exist for the player to get this missions done like most of the levels in FarCry, not to mention uncountable other shooters. They really felt like a natural environment, and the enemies have set up 'bases' and harbors and whatnot in places that A: made good logical sense or B: because they had no choice due to the island's make-up. That was my impression, at least.

The 'feral powers'. Well, when I was reading previews and what-not prior to the game's release, they seemed like a STUPID gimmick. Yes, they still sound that way, but in reality they add a ton of fun to the gameplay, give the story more backbone, and add a ton of variety and options to the combat and exploration of the game world. They keep the game from being just another shooter and help give it an identity.

The traps are a bit silly, but they too are a neat (if unrealistic) trick to keep up your sleeve for the right moment. They are extremely effective, and combined with the ragdolls make for some good laughs.

The weapons are solid and appealing. They sound great, too. Oh, and there is a decent amount of variety to them as well.

Vehicles. There are several types and they are all fun as hell. They even have military jet-skis and giant transport trucks, instead of the simple 'boat and Humvee' I expected.

Back in the day, this was one of the most popular (and for quite some time) games on-line. The fact that it has an incredible map-maker and allowed you to share them via Live! helped keep it viable for much longer than a typical shooter. Hell, I still tinker with it now and then.

So, obviously it should be in anyone's collection who has an Xbox 360 or ESPECIALLY if you have an Xbox 1. As far as the Xbox 1, it is in my personal top 10 list of games for that console.

I'll share my thoughts on the expansion later, that was enough typing for now.

Awesome write up Gunny, thanks. I'm really enthusiastic for it now. I'll give FC:I-P a go after I finish Dragon Age, Borderlands and L4D2.

Should be getting my PC back from the shop within the next three days (they're just waiting on the RMA replacement for my GTX275). I've been dying to get back to DA:O.

I'll try to finish up King Kong tomorrow.

Hey, you are welcome. I may not have the access to this gen's games like I have in all previous console generations (most of my consoles had libraries numbering in the hundreds), but the games I do have access to, I like to share my thoughts on. Negative or positive. I hope you enjoy the game. It is quite long by itself, and with the expansion is WELL over 20 hours. Quite a feat for a non-sandbox FPS from 5 years ago.

LOL, that could be quite a while! But I understand your enthusiasm for those PC titles. I am hopefully getting that HD 3850 XT next month and am getting impatient. I want to get into Risen, which I bought when it released (to show support for a developer that I am VERY loyal to). I also need to catch up on the last 2 years of games. Basically, most anything on PC that needed Shader Model 3.0 or greater that shipped since STALKER/BioShock era. I was able to play Modern Warfare 1, BioShock, and a few demos at work on my PC there, but I am really behind.

I'll try to finish up King Kong tomorrow
I have been thinking of getting the ol' Kongster out for another romp for a couple of months now. I played it through once, albeit in a rush and without spending my usual amount of time absorbing the game world like I am accustomed. I need to go back to it with a more relaxed pace, and take time to truly appreciate the world they crafted. I really liked the HUD-less design and the audio/visual cues they used in its place. How are you liking it thus far?

Oh yeah, I forgot to say what I am playing. I am feeling rather loquacious today if you haven't noticed, and forgot.

So, I recently finished Manhunt 2 and Call of Duty 2 on Veteran. I gave up on playing Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge along with EatSleepGame's game club podcast. It just wore thin after about the half-way point and I wasn't having fun anymore.

I have Machinarium, Torchlight, (go go new games with manageable specs!) all of the episodes to Strong Bad's Cool Game for Awesome People, Tropico Gold, and Age of Mythology + Titans all recently purchased, none played beyond getting the graphic/control settings adjusted properly.

I want to play Deus Ex, since I just played (and wrote a review for) Hotel Carone. That and dethtoll is playing it. Kinda neat to play through that game with someone else, and go back and forth with each other about the game.

I am a complete newbie to RTS games, and figured that being a long-time PC gamer, I had neglected this genre for far too long. I have only played Dungeon Keeper 2 and some of Black & White 1. So I bought Tropico (I am also interested in checking out Tropico 3 if i like the first one) and the Age of Myth games. I am extremely intimidated by these games. There is a LOT to learn and seems difficult for me to get started. I need a 'push' of sorts.

So, I am at a loss. Any suggestions? I am really not in the mood for Torchlight at this time. I may save that for the long, cold winter.

    Just one word, brother: Homeworld.

It's a little complicated and pretty hard, but so very worth the price of entry. If you really need something traditional and easier, there's Company of Heroes.

    Oooooh...I wouldn't say CoH is traditional-traditional.

But it sure's fun as heck, also, aces to Homeworld!

RTS? Homeworld is great, but it's very nonstandard and will definitely kick your ass. You should go with something more classic, like Starcraft, Red Alert or Warcraft 3. Actually W3 would probably be the best because of it's low unit count.

Fuck yes it is. I'm pretty much writing poems about the game at this point. You know how good it is? It's so fucking good I'll give CS a second chance. Random screenshot: Sniper mission in Pripyat, a little kick at CoD4? Pity they didn't have a 0 MoA insta-hit insta-kill rifle

So, how approachable and intimidating are they? For someone who doesn't have the RTS keyboard shortcuts engrained in their muscle memory, are they going to be viable? Do they at least have a solid tutorial, or at the very least, a helpful, dedicated community?

Well, about TA ... it doesn't have a tutorial IIRC, but it's not very complicated. There only a few keyboard functions that are good to remember and the resource management is very straightforward too. It's expained in the manual anyway. The only thing you have to learn, and you have to learn that by yourself I guess, is what certain units are good for ... mostly by building one and trying it in combat. Although the basic units are mentioned in the manual. I wasn't very good at RTS games when TA was released (I was a noob, I had to cheat to finish Red Alert back then), but I got quite into TA. And this was before the patch that made the easy difficulty actually easy.
EDIT: Oh and not sure how important is the plot for you in an RTS game, but TA pretty much doesn't have one. Just FYI.

TA PROTIP: Multiply everything by 5. So "build one" will be "build five" and "I'll attack the enemy base with 10 tanks!" becomes "I'll attack the enemy base with 50 tanks!". Remember this and you're good to go

Why would anyone play TA in this day and age when there's SupCom?

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. Good stuff, for now it seems harder than Sands of Time, sometimes even a bit too hard than it should have been on Normal.

I recommend Starcraft over TA. Story is much, much more engaging, and the gameplay is less complex (but maybe that's a good thing if you're just starting out on RTSes) but very solid.

I recommended TA because that's the one I know. I haven't played Supreme Commander because it's pretty much unplayable on my PC. Probably a good game though.

Anyway I'm currently playing the Ghost Recon CENTCOM mod - I'm not in the mood for fantasy stuff, so Risen is on hold now.

Well, there is a feature list here - you'd have to dig into the ghostrecon.net forums for more info or screenshots.

EDIT: Okay, just for you, I made a few shots on the level I just played.

I'll echo gunsmoke's description of Far Cry Instincts, it's a totally different (IMO, much better) game than the PC version. A few of the vehicle sequences feel fenced-in, but for the most part it's wide open.

Stuck at home with the flu, been playing MGS4 all day. And it's really giving Fallout 3 a run for its money as Best Game of 2008.

I seem to remember remember TA (or at least the latter patched ones) had some fairly comprehensive patrolling/waypointing/queueing systems and shortcuts. Can't remember if they were all keyboard-driven, but I remember liking that I could actually set patrol routes for my construction/repair units and they'd fix damaged stuff. Handy to have a construction plane doing laps of my static defences (though that did result in a fair amount of shot-down construction planes...).

Honestly, I'd say just jump into the deep end and learn how to swim that way. It's the best way to get engaged with RTSes; at least, that's how it worked for me.

Koki's right of course, Homeworld is pretty non-standard and pretty difficult, but that's part of what gives it its edge. The game does have a fairly good tutorial, so you won't really be lost trying to figure out the controls. I would recommend not missing out on it if you have the choice.

Of course, for polished and engaging and accessible, Starcraft and Warcraft III can't be beat. WH40K: Dawn of War wouldn't be too bad an intro either, but don't expect much of a narrative or plot.

I haven't played SupCom, but from what I hear you've got to be really, really good at managing multiple forces across different sections of the maps. Sounds hectic.
