Thief 3 Bit In PC Gamer!!!

Well it may not be much but there was a small box about the AI in Thief 3!!!

ION STORM BILLS ITSELF as the "home of the immersive simulation." For its action/RPG Thief 3, the developer has built a custom system that promises to puch game AI to new limits.

Our AI [NPC's] take lots of factors into account to determine how well they can see a target, including distance, line-of-sight, occlusion, amount of light, and speed and size of the target," explains AI programmer Paul Toxour. All of which are necessary traits for enemies tracking a silent intruder like Thief 3's hero/burgler, Garrett.

"In Thief 3, the AI will have an evidence tracking system, which means it will retain information about which events made it suspucious and where," adds Tozour. "The AI will be able to draw better conclusions about which areas should be searched more for intruders. When AIs say 'It must have been rats,' they'll have really deduced that, although if you're playing the game well, they probably won't be right."
The only picture that came with the article was the previous concept art that looks like Keepers with Garrett in the background.

I don't think I'd get too excited about the "RPG" part, yet. If, in fact, there are any character paramaters you can choose or adjust, they will still be within the confines of "thief" classes or it wouldn't be Thief. I suspect PCG is simply using an easy-to-apply label which may be innacurrate.

Maybe they think RPG because you use loot that you earned to buy equipment for the next level?

I pray that there are no "levels" in Thief 3. I don't want to max out my sneaking skills and be able to run around in daylight while stamping my feet and throwing objects. I want a constant challenge.

I noticed them saying "RPG" and was a little concerned myself. While I like the progression and improvement and customizablility in games like Deus Ex or Ghost Recon, I don't think that would fit in Thief. Garrett is already a master thief. It's his 3rd damn game (and hundereds of fan missions). He knows how to pick pockets, open locks, hide in shadows, etc. I can't see character development, even a small degree, working in this context.

My guess is that since Deus Ex, System Shock, Deus Ex 2, etc are all Warren Spector RPG style games, they just assumed Thief 3 would be the same.

What really caught my eye in that article was "Spinter Cell". Modern Thief. Very cool.

Of course Thief is a RPG. It has swords.

Sure it's an RPG. You have the Sword Upgrade, the Bow Upgrade,...

Well, since Dictionary.com has defined occlusion as "the act of occluding", I'll look up Occluding...

"1) To cause to become closed; obstruct: occlude an artery.

    2) To prevent the passage of: occlude light; occlude the flow of blood."

So I assume they mean that guards can't see through closed doors, or other objects. Or, if they mean Occluding light, they know how dark it is.

Sounds like its based on the stuff in the thief 3 idea's section on how the AI in thief 3 should behave.

I think occlusion refers to sound occlusion: certain sounds will block other sounds, so that if you jump up and down on a metal grate beside a huge piece of machinery running at full blast, it won't summon every guard for miles around.

(notice: this thread has been resurrected by the poster above me)

I reckon occlusion refers to light. For instance, you'll no longer be invisible if you stand in the tiny tiny shadow that's in an open door, as the guards will notice this big black shadow blocking their view of the other room.

No, no, no, you've all got "occlusion" wrong.

Occlusion is a term used in 3D rendering programming referring to how models are rendered when they are partially blocked by an object. Basically that means that a guard might get a little suspicious if he sees your head peaking around the corner, depending on how bright it is. It also means they will follow you in the correct direction if they come around a corner while you're going around another one and see your feet kicked up as the rest of your body passes in front of the wall (i.e. they can only see your feet, but not the rest of your body).

I'm 90% sure that's what it means, but I could be wrong.

Of course, SE's definition will also be correct if mine is, since the AI will be able to recognize any part of your lit body, not just the whole or most of it (as in Thief 1 & 2, and pretty much every game out now).
