i played pretty nonstop until my last post and I just arrived in Act4......
    this game is huge !!!!!

and it's a REAL shame about the dialogue being cut for english.
I would have liked to have a "extended and unrated" edition.

so, it's back to some witching. I'm an Geralt addict.
poker, fistfights, monsterslaying and hourlong drunk discussions in taverns or in swamps !!!! I LOVE IT

    Want more?

There's a setting in the .ini file named Language and it's initially set to Language=FinalEnglish_Short. Try setting it to Language=FinalEnglish_Long.

It should allow you to see uncut dialogues... Backup your file first as I am not sure how it works and how many texts it changes

    'The Witcher' rocks, absolutely outstanding.

Playing the UK version, changed the .ini and didn't see any differances in the subtitles yet.

Hopefully the great reviews and fanfare this game has earned will prompt the publisher not to interfere as much with the developers vision next time around, allowing for a non-neutered version outside of the Polish market. (Particularly so in NA.)

Also, 'Last Wish' should be published in the US sometime in May.

Perhaps it is necessary to play the game from the beginning.... I don't know. If you notice any differences between spoken and displayed dialogue, than it's working.

I'll just stick for the "vanilla" version for now.
because I'm gonna replay this game for sure.
so next is another patch and sdk/tools promised by the devs.
    then it's replay with:

    polish speech
    uncut english subtitles
    hard mode

    I'm in Act5 now and I just can't stop.

    I-have-to-slay-incinerated-monsters-in-group-style

    spoiler:
I already beat the king in poker
and the old druid in fistfighters, I'm now the champion in both minigames:

So, I'd like to get this game...

But I'd like to get the UK Collector's edition. Who wouldn't?

I found it on game.uk.co (or something like that) for about $90 once you do the math. However they will not take my card number for some reason.

I found an imported standard UK edition on another site, for a much more reasonable price that is, but I am still wondering if I have any chance of getting what it is I actually want.

Any leads I can follow? Am I being silly? Should I save my money?

does it really matter which edition you get? i just bought it from dvd or somewhere (forget which ) and it's a fantastic game well worth £18...

+ i love vizima, haven't like any part of an rpg this much since amn (BG2) it shows imperial city in oblivion up for being generic and boring.

For what it's worth Digi, I'm gearing up to order the collector's edition from Game (once some money rolls in) and if they give me a hassle about my credit card I'll be taking advantage of Matthew's generous offer. So you can say there's at least one person in the world who doesn't think you're being stupid about it.

You should. It's a very good game.
System requirements are a bit stiff. Especially memory requirements. I was running fine on all high settings, until I got into Act III. Now it is obvious that I need 2 GB of RAM, and 1 GB doesn't cut it if you want to play with detailed textures.

Can you pickpocket npcs or not or steal items
No. You can take items from people's houses, but those items are nothing special. Food, a torch, beer, simple alchemical ingredients, stuff like that.

The Witcher is a sword fighter, who uses a bit of magic. He's not a thief or rogue. There is no real sneaking. Although you can sometimes decided to avoid the monsters. He's not a hunter or a ranger. So no guns or bows or throwing knives. His mana is a bit limited. So during fights, you can use your magic to stun or knock down enemies, or set them on fire, or shield yourself. But in the end, you'll have to use your sword to finish them off.

Still a very good game. If you liked Thief 1 and Thief 2, I'm sure you'll like this game too. The world in this game feels more like the world of Garrett than any other game I've played so far.

I love this game and all, but I feel the need to warn people that have yet to play the game to skip hard unless they're straight up mean at videogames.

I'm playing it on hard. I felt playing it any other way would be doing a disservice to the game. So, as of right now, I've had the game a little over a week. I've restarted once to redo my stats and build up my stock of potions. Despite all this, I still have yet to get past the hellhound. Everything beforehand is easily manageable so long as you use a bit of caution and forethought. But the hellhound...no matter what level you are or how many potions you have...will tear you to pieces with only the smallest efforts on it's part.

It wouldn't be so bad if I could avoid the stuns, or, better yet, if Abagail would heal on a fairly regular basis. Right now my only option is to see if taking two Swallows has a cumulative effect.

    It doesn't. (Swallows)

You didn't ask but here's what worked for me :

First thing, over the shoulder view just doesn't cut it for this fight. Zoom out w/ F1.

    spoiler:
Run from the beast like he has your number, which he does. Wait for him to summon a few hounds, kill them in group silver avoinding the beast.
    Attack beast w/ strong silver.
Repeat avoiding and group attacking with each of his subsequent summons. On hard it takes about 4 repeats but it's not that bad if you don't let them surround you. Also, the witch can't permanently die.. so you don't need to restart when she falls.

Where did you find a silver sword? I've done all the quests I've happened across in the area, but all I've managed to find is a meteorite steel sword.

You'll get it during the beginning of chap 2. Sorry about the confusion, I forgot that you don't have it yet at that point for some reason.

Just use the above strategy with steel/meteor, specter-oil helps if you have the alchemy skills. knockdown also helps if powered up enough by that point.

If you read the monster description you'll find that barghests and (presumably) hellhounds are vulnerable to knockdown so use the aard sign.

Bukary, thanks for the tip, but it's not working for me either. I did a clean install, update to 1.1 and then started a new game. The dwarven blacksmith at the inn in Vizima outskirts still says the short version of the "why do humans hate non humans" conversation.

Have you tried the tweak personally or is it just speculation? Also, if you'd be kind enough to post some links to anywhere people talk about this possible solution might help me troubleshoot it.

    Thank you!

Yup, I managed to stun the hellhound and kill it in one hit. Bit flukey and I was playing on normal, but worth a shot.

i defeated the hellhound on medium without any potion.
    on hard:
swallow, blizzard, specter oil, visit place of power -> concentrate on hellhound, ignore the other dogs.
develop silver sword and talents for "anti-stun".

it's not that hard on hard but I have it easier 'cause I played the game already.

I've got a problem then. I've developed my strength, dexterity, intelligence, and my skill sword skills, but I've ignored aard and the silver sword completely. So I guess my Witcher is at a serious disadvantage against this thing.

Right now my best strategy is to use Swallow, Tawny Owl, Blizzard, and Specter Oil, fight it til I get to about half health, then run around and use aard to push it away while I wait for my health to regain.

Edit: Ha! I did it on my first try of the day. Used group style to kill the beregosts while I focused on the beast, switched to strong sword style afterwords and killed the thing in under 10 seconds. I was stunned only once, just used specter oil and a swallow, and Abagail didn't even take a single hit. Makes me wonder why I tried it almost 15 times, when all I had to do was switch to strong.

yeah, that's what I loved about this game: there's always a smart, right, quick solution to all monsters. (hint: develop aard a little more, you will need it much later for an enviromental puzzle fight)
you can master the last level with Ignii alone.

btw: it doesn't matter that you don't have sliver developed because you only have a steel sword in the beginning.
while waiting for your signs to reload, use fast style, even if it doesn't deal much damage, you parry much quicker.

i did it the same: stun, group style on dogs while targeting the hellhound. stun again, switch to strong on hellhound only. (repeat)
another good tactic: don't kill all the dogs or the hellhound spawns new ones.
so it's good to let one dog live if it's possible.

I'm replaying on hard now with different decisions and still loving every ounce of it.
