"I was never properly trained in its operation"
"That makes me one ugly son-of-a-bitch. How'd my face get all marked-up with bioelectrics?"
Well, which one is it for you guys?
I can't make up my mind which one cracked me up more, so I'll post both my favourite JC lines here (highlight the spoiler for info on where that line was said):
"A bomb is a bad choice for close-range combat." - in response to a Zyme addict in the Mole tunnels who threatens to attack JC with a LAM
and
"A bomb!" - in response to Jock when he finds the bomb on his helicopter at Everett's hideout
Comically, both are about bombs.![]()
"I was never properly trained in its operation"
"That makes me one ugly son-of-a-bitch. How'd my face get all marked-up with bioelectrics?"
"Bravery is not a function of firepower."
"My vision is augmented" in response to why he'd wear sunglasses at night.
Page: "I will burn like the brightest star"
JC: "Oh, you're gonna burn alright."

"A BOMB!" is classic.
I also really like his later clueless one that goes something like "So this AI wants to merge with my brain?"
"What."
I think it shows up twice, but it might be just once.
"You have ten seconds to leave before I add you to the NSF casualty list..."
spoiler:Threatening Jojo, or whoever (some punk)...
I think it's Johnnyspoiler:threatening Sandra Renton
That's a line you'd expect a punk like Johnny to say?

"Suuuuure."
Thanks fer gettin me in
No, he thinks it's said TO Johnny.Originally Posted by TF

The above selections are all good, but not my personal choice. My favourite line could be construed as a spoiler of itself, so:
spoiler:"We have grown, but there is still much to be done. There are many that live in darkness that must be shown the way. For it is the dawning of a new day."
Spoken, of course, by JC as the last line of the game if you choose the Deus Ex Machina endgame, after he emerges from Helios' fusion chamber thing.

I love the irony of how she continues to say that even after the club is raided and a dozen people (including her friend) are killed.Originally Posted by Spitter

"Horreeeebluh! Horreeeeebluh!"

(BTW, I found one of them for you:
"UNATCO Troop 1: Denton! Hey, it’s Denton!"
"UNATCO Troop 2: You want these?"
"JC Denton: What?")
I really liked "My vision's augmented." that TGGP posted ...
JC at his best for me was in those philosophical conversations where he'd be at once way too naive, but then make up for it by being so cool and (ironically) skeptical. JC just had this undying faith that there just had to be something good in some gov't somewhere, in separation of powers, in political freedom, etc ... if only to set up the cynicism of every other character in the whole game -- but he also distrusted the cynics for being too cynical. It's hard to show it in just one line out of context, but you really get a feel for it reading some of the dialogues and JC's responses where he's so sure about what's right, so reasonable.
talking to the Terrorist Leader in the beginning, Jock the 1st time, to the bartender in HK:
And to Morpheus, of course:"JC Denton: Our governments have limited power by design."
"Isaac: Rhetoric- and you believe it! Don’t you know where those slogans come from?"
"JC Denton: I give up."
"Isaac: Well-paid researchers - how do you say it? - "think tanks," funded by big businesses. What is that? A "think tank"?"
"JC Denton: Hardly as sinister as a dictator, like China’s Premier."
"Isaac: It’s privately-funded propaganda. The Trilateral Commission in the United States for instance."
"JC Denton: The separation of powers acknowledges the petty ambitions of individuals; that’s its strength."
"Isaac: A system organized around the weakest qualities of individuals will produce these same qualities in its leaders."
"JC Denton: Perhaps certain qualities are an inseparable part of human nature.
"Isaac: The mark of the educated man is the suppression of these qualities in favor of better ones. The same is true of civilization."
If I had to pick one line out of those, maybe the "I give up" captures his weird mix between constant skepticism and naivety/undying faith as well as anything. The deadpan line "You underestimate humankind's love of freedom" captures something at the core of the whole game ... and it still sounds a little naive and funny if you think about it. Has he been paying attention to anything going on around him?! More like underestimating humankind's lust for power."JC Denton: Electronic surveillance hardly inspires reverance. Perhaps fear and obedience, but not reverance."
"Morpheus: God and the gods were apparitions of observation, judgement and punishment. Other sentiments towards them were secondary."
"JC Denton: No one will ever worship a software entity peering at them through a camera."
"Morpheus: The human organism always worships. First, it was the Gods, then it was fame (the observation and judgement of others), next it will be self-aware systems you have built to realise truly omnipresent observation and judgement."
"JC Denton: You underestimate humankind's love of freedom."
"Morpheus: The individual desires judgement. Without that desire, the cohesion of groups is impossible, and so is civilisation."
If I had to just pick some vanilla one-liners, these two are pretty good and haven't been mentioned yet:
"Yeah, well, take a good look at Manderley's dead body - consider that my resignation. I don't have time to write a letter."
"You mechs may have copper wiring to reroute your fear of pain, but I've got nerves of steel."
(edit: Oh, and not by JC, but the Russian sailor by the pool hall has one of the more classic lines IMO: "they shoot, and i run, and I speel my drink ALL OVER MY UNIFORM!" ... apparently pretty popular around here since Google's first hit for it was here.)

You have to kill Manderley in his office, before you get close enough to Walton Simons to trigger the conversation, IIRC.
Your pathetic excuse for a life is either worth more than a life, or it isn't worth living.

"Lets try some word association. First word: ambrosia."
"I capped his ass." (or something like that)
Oh J.C., you scamp you.
