It looks like Knytt was recently completed. In it, you play a weird little rat/monkey/kid that was abducted by an alien, only the alien's ship runs into too many asteroids and crashlands on another planet. It is up to Knytt to run, jump, and climb to recover the lost spaceship components so that it and the alien may escape the planet.

The controls are simple, just be sure to play the tutorial. The map is large, you can climb almost anywhere, and there are secret passages through walls that look solid.

Thanks for that, I'm loving Knytt. Took a break so I don't end up playing through the whole thing at once

Took me about an hour to complete it. Didn't search for all that many secrets though as the ones I found seemed slightly pointless.

That's because they are. As far as I can tell (and see from giving the forums a quick browse), all of the secrets are extra areas with more cute pixelly creatures to watch.

There are two secrets that are mildly useful, besides the places that give boosts to your jumping power. The two secrets are a song that can be played in the credits screen, and a minigame also accessible from the credits screen.

Also, you can cheat to get items, by editing the settings file. Under [secrets] add:

    spoiler:
    Extra=Hang Glider
    or
    Extra=Balloon

I loved Knytt. Exactly what I want from an indie game - simple, polished design + offbeat aesthetics. Great use of interactive music, too. Some of the animated characters didn't seem to fit with the rest of the visual style but in overall, wonderful experience.

Did I hear aliens vs predator gold (or at least normal version) is free to download now? Or was I imagining it?

No, you imagined it. The source code was released a long time ago, which is probably what you were thinking of.

Just found another gem: Cortex Command.

The gameplay's much like Liero or its clones such as Gusanos(both are also freeware, but I can't be bothered to dig up links for them)in the sense that you run around and blow stuff up in a map with destroyable terrain with various weapons that have to reload on occasion, but never run out of ammo. The difference, other than theme, is where the "command" bit kind of comes in-there are two opposing brains in two bases that can order in units to destroy each other.

To get more funds in order to send down more units, you have to use a digger tool to claim the gold underground. Of course, you have to be careful and defend your brain in the meantime. (I've found even Easy difficulty difficult simply because as I'm trying to mine for resources, the asshole of an AI is dropping craploads of soldiers at my base. It also takes me way too long to purchase units since I can't just use the mouse.)

Controls can be found here. Be careful if you're like me and have flight sim stuff hooked up, though, as your controllers' axes will interfere with gameplay(they recommend Xbox 360 pads for a good reason), and re-mapping them isn't as simple as it should be.

It'll take me way too long to get into the details, so you might as well start playing the game to get a hang of it all...

Bang! Howdy! appears to be a turn-based online multiplayer game set in a cartoony version of the American old west. By the same dudes that made Puzzle Pirates.

Which reminds me, I still need to try Puzzle Pirates. Those guys seems to put out some cool stuff.

    Typhoon 2001 -- Tempest 2000 remake

So I've recently been utterly addicted to Typhoon 2001, a remake/update of the Jaguar title "Tempest 2000", which was of course an update to the original classic arcade game "Tempest".

Now I never had a Jaguar, and I have to say that I never enjoyed "Tempest", but this game pretty much rocks.

The author has been making frequent updates, and the latest release -- 1871 (28.01.2007) -- is definitely the slickest and trippiest yet. Check it out.

My two pieces of advice are:

    (a) Remember that you get a superzapper (smart bomb) every life and every level. Don't shy away from using 'em.

    (b) The jump key is absolutely critical. I hold both the fire and jump keys down continuously at the start of a level, so that the very moment I acquire the jump power I'm automatically made aware of the fact.

    Toblo

    http://toblo.csnation.net/

Sorry if this has already been posted I had a quick search and didn’t find it.
“Toblo is a free, fast-paced capture the flag game that has two teams using the world as weaponry, throwing bombs, and generally destroying things...” read more about Toblo

I can’t stand the cutesy sounds but I just love to watch the blocks fly. Its part of the slamdance competition that you’ll probably know about if you read gamasutra.

Hmm, hadn't tried running that in a long time.

    ...

Nope - with 93.71, I tried starting a new Alien game at 1280x1024x32 and the "menu music" was skipping and stuttering badly, and when the game started, I could see nothing except pitch black. Hmmm.. I forgot to try the vision modes...

Too lazy to check again right now...

Binary Zoo has a new game!

    http://binaryzoo.com/games/echoes/

echoes is essentially our take on Asteroids & to save anyone else the trouble of making the comparison, yes, it's also "a bit like Geometry Wars" :)

I also need to mention the very best Gravitar/Thrust-like game I've ever seen, bar none. Behold, the awesome Gravitron.

You'll also find a link there to Thrust Extreme, which is also quite nice (and has an optional new 'rope'-style tractor beam which is a good laugh), but I'm always much harsher on Thrust remakes just because I spent so long playing the original, so I'm less enthralled with that one personally. You may well love it, however :)

Looks great. Any ideas how to fix this though?
[image removed since it's of no use now]

Fixed. Rebooting is good for you, apparently.

    @ Shadowcat...

Hey, that Echoes is bloody awesome! It don't take long until the screen is full of exploding things! It reminds me of another Asteroids clone, (I forget what it's called), which was featured in a copy of PC Gamer. Anyone remember the name of that one? The screens in that one got filled with millions of pixels!

Jesus, has this thing improved. Last time I tried it, it was framebuffer blurring the fuck out of the visuals, which made it extremely hard to Make Stuff Out. On top of that, it used to be slow as molasses - 640x480 was just barely playable on my current rig.
This release, instead, keeps the spirit of Tempest 2000 almost perfectly, and runs perfectly at 1360x768 even with anti-aliased lines. Mad props to the author. This is AWESOME.

This is the best Tempest remake I've played outside of 2000. It's that fucking good. I only have a few minor gripes, most if which are miniscule balancing tweaks:
    - The bonus stages are missing. This is my biggest beef with the game, because the calm, soothing pace of those things every five to ten levels was a very welcome change from the insane gameplay.
    - While the PULSAR WARNING is nice, the game really needs to highlight corridors that pulsars are on. Tempest 2000 did this in a subtle way (by just flashing the borders of that corridor), and it makes pulsars MASSIVELY less frustrating.
    - minor balance tweaks I'd like to see are enlarging the time window in which you can shoot flippers on the rim from a jump and re-introducing the ability to shoot flippers on the rim without jumping by just holding still when they flip onto the corridor occupied by you. This didn't work ALWAYS in T2k actually - if the flipper hopped onto your corridor when you just had the gap in between two salvoes of shots, you'd die.

Other than that, fucking BRILLIANT. This will stay on my hard drive for a long time.

My two pieces of advice are:

    (a) Remember that you get a superzapper (smart bomb) every life and every level. Don't shy away from using 'em.
To that I'll add that it's generally wise to try and keep the zapper around until after you've gotten the Jump, or possibly until you get the score powerup after that. If you fire it before then, particularly the later levels in the game can get EVIL.

This site focuses on games that were great but just didnt get a fair shake the first time around. Sound familiar? Lots of gems here! Most free, some cheap. Flight unlimited 2, System Shock 1 and 2, Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri are a few of the Looking Glass games. Screen shots and a brief description of games included, it's a very well done website. Ultima IV too.
