Cathedral Restoration back underway
a long while back I said I would work on restoring the cathedral. Well, I figured I'd upgrade DromEd to at least Thief Gold level, and that's when I saw the readme. Unscathed missions complete with brushes. The cathedral will probably be restored and modified with Hammerites sometime near May. Expect the same thing with some new little personal add-ons in there (I won't give them away). So dust of the old Thief or Thief Gold disks and be ready for it's release.

I missed a few month's of posting, so I'm a bit confused.
Are you going to take the run-down cathedral in "Return to Cathedral" and bring it back to life the way it once was before it became haunted?
That would be very cool! I'd play that. =]
My only suggestion is to make some of the machinery not fully installed. Like they were just getting some of it implemented and working. Remembering you're in the past can be cool for levels like this.

Wow, this level must've taken a while to make. You should look at the unscathed level with DromEd. It's huge. Yes, that's right Jomero. I made a commitment to do this probably before you were here, about August of last year. If I hadn't left for about 3 months and remembered my password for the forum, I'd have around 500 posts right now. Should've written it down somewhere. Oh well.
Anyways, I'm not going to change the machinery, because this is maybe a month prior to the Eye's manifestation. If that sounds wierd to you, here's my hypothesis on the reason for the undead overtaking the cathedral:
***SPOILERS***
There is some kind of catacombs (hint for a new add-on, the catacombs. always wanted to make one) under the cathedral or it might've come simply from the graveyard in back. The eye has incredible power. The Hammerites viewed it as a mystical gift from the Builder and the priests put it above the alter. But the Eye betrayed them and reanimated their dead, from the graveyard, catacombs, whatever and they took over by shear numbers. You remember the myth from the briefing and the collected journals found throughout the level syaing that their "brethren fell only to rise against them". This was the Eye's doing. Reanimating dead as they fell. The Eye was obviously not from the heavens but rather some trick composed by the Trickster or something else.
Anyway, just a theory
Any more ideas would be appreciated.
PS- I'll put some screenshots when it nears completion for you, tafferboy

I believe I've been here before November of last year. I'm pretty sure of it because I remember having to re-register for some odd reason. But I didn't frequent as much. =] Other games that come into my life tend to make me stray to other forums. But I always come back.
Well, about the eye-on-the-alter thing, don't forget that a note in RTC clearly says that they lock the eye away somewhere in the lower parts of the level but it seems to magically reappear over the alter every morning.
Let us know when it's done.

Oh yeah, that's right. I remember now. It's looking good. I pretty much have the main cathedral redone and I'm working on St. Yora's, probably the most sabotaged place of the level.

Fixing the cathedral, eh??? Maybe you could fix the Lost City while you're at it.

Wow... if someday I figure out how to install levels, I will be EXTREMELY interested in playing that mission! What a fantastic idea! I never would've thought of it, but I wish I had.
Hmmm... if I think of any suggestions, I'll let you know. I loved RTC, so this level will be a real treat for me...
-
Yeah, I think RTC was a classic little "run errands for the ghost in hostile territory" type mission. Well, I worked me bum off today and St. Yora's reconstruction is done as well as the main cathedral. I need some suggestions soon, or they won't be incorporated, so if you want them, say 'em now. Oh, and the garden's finished, if you wanted to know.

Secluded Memory:
the idea of the cathedral being restored and occupied with hammerites is very cool. but hows about the plot?

Or for a real nightmarish challenge try importing the level into the thief 2 dromed. Imagine the level bathed in a luminescent purple light from the now available colored lighting.

Great idea!! Would be marvelous going through the real cathedral with alive (and non-haunted) Hammerites going around. Do you have any screenshots you can share with us??? And another thing, will Murus be fully alive? I'd like to finally get a real satisfying revenge

Drawing on a similar topic from the other forums, how about having the mission when the Eye actually takes over? Imagine the undead bursting through the doors, as the Hammers fight a desperate rear-guard action to abandon the Cathedral with their relics
! Maybe even have the Keepers bringing the Talismans. There would be no need to simulate architectural damage - that would happen later. Good idea, or just impractical?

The idea of having the undead approaching was discussed a while back. That would require sophisticated scripting and since I'm an independant level creator, I don't have the resources to do that. Also, the attack came from within the cathedral, mentioned in gathered texts from the level. There'll be plenty of surprises. This weekend's gonna be long as I worked on the level for the past 12 hours today (I'm not exaggerating) and will most likely do the same tomorrow. I'll try to get screenshots of the new cathedral soon.
About the Thief 2 DromEd, I think it's either a little buggy or it has a different layout, because you have to do the more complicated things in it. I think I'll stick to the TG Editor.
Ambience and Lighting are a major pain. I may just have to scrap all the sounds and add my own as well as scrap all the lighting and start from scratch. For example, water doesn't emit the water sound, you have to add a marker or object that emits the sound. I get rid of the water in the basement, but the water sound stays, so I have to find all the ambient markers (thank goodness LGS labeled the ambient markers different from the patrol markers, so I don't have to sort them out). I also have to delete the script that makes the doors close automatically from every single door in the level. I might as well just scrap them, too and put new ones in. Architecture, believe it or not is easy. The click and drag work: piece of cake. I know, I'm rambling on to the newcomers, but hey, download DromEd from http://www.thief-darkproject.com or check the TG or T2 install disk for it.
Also, I'm creating a standard B&E mission along the side, and it looks kind of like Assassins with that The Sword feeling to it. It's barely even started so expect it to come out even later than the Restoration. I'll import some screen shots by my next post.
The Plot: It's not really that much so far. Some usuals. On higher difficulties, you must find five gold nuggets. On expert, you must descend to the catacombs and find the serpentile torq. Besides that, it's pretty much a standard B&E mission. Oh, and I was planning to have Garrett leave the same way as in RTC by way of the Cloister, but the keys, etc., will be in different places, so it should be a different experience. I may need to release a practice so you guys can help me find any bugs I may have missed during development. You might expect it out late April/early May

That's such a brilliant idea for a level, I've been wanting to make levels like this for ages but I hate level editing!
I was also thinking how cool it would be for Garrett to revisit Thief 1 levels but with Thief 2 style technology. How about Garrett going back to Lord Baffords, but he's so annoyed with being burgled that he's now fitted security machines etc?
Another interesting idea would be to revisit Constatines mansion. What would have happened to it? I would think that it had become public knowledge that he was the builder and is dead, so would the city authorities border the place off? And it would be a mess too I would think.
I imagine it's easy to use Thief 1 level a Thief 2 editor. I might be wrong.
-
could you please add some stairs in the library? having to use a rope arrow in a working place like that is a bit stupid. i wait with bated breath.
