Appreciate your work with this, thanks!
Thief 2 sound package is updated and ready for download.
@Mr Bean: Thanks for telling me the one with the Rumford mission. I actually didn't change it, but Thief didn't manage to play it at 44 kHz and so it was half speed. Fixed that now.
So changes here so far:
- pageturn noise reduced by 8 dB
- carpet footsteps of player normalised to -1.5 dB
- arrow to wood sounds swapped
- s01mel converted back to 22kHz
- uhmm... did I forget anything? Dunno...
Appreciate your work with this, thanks!
Looks and Sounds fun. Thanks for you work.

The footsteps are fine for me and the pageturn volume is spot on now.
However I prefer the original pageturn.wav which sounds like the soft paper you get in books. The new sound is rather crisp (like wrapping paper or cellophane) but it's no big deal.
I've got as far as Bank in TMA and am hearing several things I missed before which is adding to the enjoyment. Well done!
I like those new sounds, problem is... I can't hear my own footsteps on most surfaces and that really bugs me. I really like all the other sounds, they are much smoother now but I wish my own footsteps were somewhat louder
Okay, both files updated.
- PAGETURN.WAV now based again on the original file
- Player footsteps normalised and compressed (esp. carpet), so now they are hearable (carpet is still quite low, but however, footsteps on a carpet aren't loud anyway)
- ambstart on thief 2 edited: I cut the Reversed Reverb at the beginning so now it's more like oroginal sound
I think now I'm nearly done with it.
THIEF WILL NEVER DIE ! GOD SAVE GARRETT !
Yep, poor guy, how many years he has been running around blackjacking people now.
Sorry, couldent resist.
Did anyone ever make a good comparison thing? Maybe someone who is very familiar with which sounds are updated could FRAPS some Thief 2 gameplay and do lots of things with those specific sounds, then record same situation and things with original sounds. If the video were encoded with a good bitrate for the audio, it should illustrate the difference.
"For the Love of the Game"
This might work perfect with a tool, that can record and replay keyboard and mouse actions. Though I don't know any.
Somehow, some of the sounds are missing. You can't hear the guards talk.
Or when they are hit by the arrow, there is no sound, but only the blackjack.
Most of the other sounds work greatly.
Well, i didn't touch any of the voice samples. It works perfect here on every computer i can test it on. And also the arrow sounds themselves work perfect.
The only thing I can imagine is that you haven't set enough channels in the Thief Audio menu.

I have a couple of comments. It's a general improvement in all cases apart from loud jump noises - I found these to be dumbed down - so activities where I would normally know I've made enough noise that I've alerted something sounded like 'unnoticeable' sounds like walking on stone.
Second - the lift sound is no longer a continuously running one, it's now quite clear when the wavefile replays.
I fixed the lift sounds.
Well, I don't think the jump sounds are too loud compared to the normal steps. The steps in fact are now on a comparable level to the original sounds.
Thanks for your work and the updates, it sounds very promising and I'll certainly try it as soon as I can (soon, hopefully...didn't have a chance to look in a FM for weeks now)
links in 1st post not working any more?
SQ only got outdated versions from January. Links in 1st post were to the newest versions at the original hoster.
Can someone add this and other similar things to the FAQ. In months ahead when this thread goes down in the past, new users won't know about a sound effects enhancement, and they won't know to search for it either.
I'll try to do it when I find time.
