    SHTUP beta 6+8800gtx=no game

    Game works great on my present rig.
    However it doesn't work as soon as I unzip SHTUP beta6 into my ss2 folder. It crashes to desktop at around 75% loading screen.

    Yes i've installed it properly, made the game mod ready, and have used SHTUP with ease before on other computers.

    with beta5 version the game manages to load but crashes instantly.

    c2d E6600
    8800gtx forceware 171.16
    win xp sp2

    any suggestions or even explanations why it doesnt work would be appreciated

    SHTUP is the only mod I ever use since everything else is too cartoony and\or doesn't fit in with the my desired game's atmosphere.

    Are you sure you've played it properly before on that rig? It reeks of recentish upgrade to me

    Sounds very much like the whole dual-core/hyperthreading problem. Try setting affinity or getting the HT patch? (available on Kolya's site)

    There is no hyperthreading issue. I have all the fixes and have the FAQ almost memorized. The game works flawlessly in vanilla mode. It starts crashing only after i install SHTUP.

    No problem with the game itself. It just seems that the video card has isssues with new textures added to the game.

    Start deleting things until it doesn't crash anymore.

    i actually was doing that , but didn't have the nerve to fully go through with it

    using only the obj folder I could get through the 4 year period but as soon as i press the first door open button, it crashes.

    Would be nice to hear an explanation for why this is happening, just out of curiosity,if you even have the answer that is.

    Sorry, my only theory as of now is "Because Nvidia sucks".

    It might be gagging on the Targa textures though.

    Use SS2 Mod Manager next time.

    Hmm..Oddness. I have a very similar spec to you but 8800GTS640 rather than GTX and have had no problems in SS2. Not really sure what to suggest :/ Complete reinstall of SS2 and/or new graphics drivers I guess would be easiest.

    no change, well if someone with a same series card has no issues then i guess it's down to the 171.16 drivers. When a new version comes out maybe i'll get better results.

    thx for all the responses.

    Try Forceware v163.75. If you really need the Crysis optimisations then try Xtreme-G v163.76.

    What an irrelevant suggestion.

    i'm done with crysis, its pretty much a one time game, unlike ss2.

    i'll try a few older driver sets i guess, 169's are out of the question because of AA issues, xcept for 169.13.

    I do get the same pink menu like the person from the thread that Kolya mentioned, and the game crashes when going back from options into main menu, but the game itself works without issue, with AA/AF at its highest, 1600x1200.

    Will report back if other driver sets allow SHTUP to work.

    yeah and modmanager suggestion was pretty useless seeing that manual mod-ready is the same

    Complete guess, but I remember issues with nvidia driver/card combos related to textures where one side or both wasn't 2^x in length.

    All the SS2 textures are - and need to be - 2^x. It won't display any that are not.

    SS2 would crash for me also when loading. Pulled my hair out for a while, was due to video drivers. I ended up using 158.19XP drivers and worked fine with my 8800GTX and patched SS2 with beta6 Rebirth texture pack.

    Sry for the necro post but i think its relevant.

    with the 174.53 drivers and the latest ddfix, i am able to use SHTUP textures beta 6( finally I love the new blood), without the fix the game still crashes when loading up custom textures. so ddfix is a must.

    get the drivers here
    http://www.rage3d.com/board/showpost...82&postcount=1

    and moded inf that includes all nvidia series 6,7,8 cards here(just place it in the folder where the drivers extract before installing and overwrite)

    Get the ddfix here
    Code:

    edit the ddfix ini for ss2 instruction included inside the ini itself.

    here is the ss2 exe moded to run ddfix as supplied by Namelessvoice.

    Code:

    OMG it worked for thief I on WinXP.

    [Main]
    ;Screen resolution
    ;Must be 800x600 or greater
    gWidth=1024
    gHeight=768

    ;Set to 1 to fix the duel core related crash
    MultiCoreFix=1

    ;Set to 1 to automatically register lgvid.ax each time thief is started up
    VideoFix=0

    ;This can be set to zero to get a more accurate z-buffer
    ;Doesn't usually make a noticable difference to picture quality
    UseCompatibleZBuffer=1

    ;Compatibility settings for different games/hardware/drivers
    ;SS2 players should set these options to '2' and '0xf81f' respectively
    ;Thief 2 players with corrupted in game text should use '2' and '0x0000'
    UseSysMemOverlay=2
    OverlayColourKey=0xf81f
