Official sequels 10 years after the game was released? Are you serious? Plus, we already have high quality FMs.

Nah, not really. They haven't been claiming that Thief 4 will be extremely moddable or anything like that. Nobody is going to produce anything on the Dark Engine that competes (technically) with a modern game engine and a full, devoted team. I'm not saying people can't make better missions with an inferior toolset, I'm saying that even if they did it won't appeal to the mass market. It won't steal any thunder from Thief 4.

A boycott of Eidos? Good idea! Hey Eidos, I won't buy your software anymore until you'll release the Dark Engine source!

I had no idea this thread existed. Oh god, I'd sell a kidney for the Dark Engine source. Where do I sign.

    P.S.
I know where to sign. It was a rhetorical question.

Do we even know if this source is usable?

If it just came from an ex-LGS employee, it might be of a prior and potentially pre-beta version, which is not terribly useful for compiling a new patch for T2. Admittedly they didn't have to do a lot of programming in the lead up to Thief 2 release like they would have for Thief 1.

Regarding creating a new editor, most of the work would be in reverse engineering parts of dromed that have calls back to the executable and detailing out the map files to know how to programmer you editor to read, write, and save them. Most of the tool, however, calls over to various crfs and folders to pull up stuff (even scripts), so it's mostly looking at folder contents anyway.

    Very easy comparatively.

    It will be usable.

Also, if you know how easy it is to reverse engineer, then how about giving Volca a hand?

I did say comparatively... you know to things like game executables or building editors for games that don't have any like Ultima IX, games with tons of resources and scripting functions internalized inside the executable like in Ultima IX...

Plus, I'm too busy with another reverse engineering project involving (you guessed it) Ultima IX.

After looking at that file it seems these are the actual sources. There's the whole AI code, CSG stuff and Dromed too. Can't say which game version this reflects though, or whether all necessary libraries are included.

Btw, I'm lost. What is Enchantermon's post above referring to, and where did he post that?

    Edit: nm, read the link.

Avast is ok with the archive and its contents. False positive is my guess?

That's excellent. Now where's my Visual Studio 6 disk..?

  21. #771
Man, some folks around here are going to have a lot of fun with this stuff. Great to see we didn't have to rely on Eidos to someday cough it all up.

I was hoping Eidos would release it so that we wouldn't have to concern ourselves with legal issues. Still, it's better to have some kind of release than to have none at all.

backs up file to usb disk

I'm stunned and excited, might have to dig up my old VC6 disc. Someone who knows what they're doing needs to sort out and organize this mess of files and post an updated archive, sorted into build folders with .dsp files and such.

    *looks at Telliamed and NV*

    Well well well,

and what should be the first fixes of the Dark Engine? What do you think?

PS: A separate sticky thread should be created, IMO.

I was thinking the same. We should try to get the project back in place and try to build the exe, if possible.
I'm installing VC6.0 right now....I knew I would need this disc again!
