2K Boston is being Irrational again

    http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archi...nal-games.aspx

Someone came to their senses! This 2010 place is very weird. But will 2K Australia also resume being Irrational?

Also, if that thing they posted in the article is actually the studio's new logo, it looks like someone tried to merge Bioshock with Freedom Force.

It was stupid to change the name in the first place. Was it their decision to do that? If they actually made the decision to change the name themselves, and it wasn't demanded by the higher ups...I'm shocked. Irrational is an awesome name. I just don't know how they could toss out all of that history, and the ties to LGS.

If only 2k Games would let 2k Czech go back to being Illusion Softworks. And all the other studios they renamed back to their original names as well.

Not a fan of the new Irrational logo, either. Though I guess it fits the shiny and accessible design philosophy that they've adopted.

    [edit]
Was it their decision to do that?
I'm 99% certain that 2k Games demanded it. It's what they've done with all of the studios they've acquired, with the idea being to associate the qualities that made a studio stand out in the first place with '2k' and not 'Studio Name Here.' It sort of backfired on them with Irrational because so much of the press kept saying (formerly 'Irrational Games') when referring to 2k Boston/2k Australia. They really should have seen it coming though, buying a studio with a 'celebrity' game designer like Levine.

Would you go as far as to say you are... System Shocked?

The new logo looks like Irrational Radio.

Awesome! The article makes it sound like it was their idea to change their name, though. In any event, at least they're back.

I also think it's kind of hilarious that in the end, '2k Boston' only made one game. Too bad 2k Marin is likely to remain that, instead of becoming 'Irrational West' or something. Though considering the whole 'Rockstar North' thing, that may still be coming.

Don't take it so literally ffs he means your post was unfunny and waste of time and he was right and you know it.

As to the name change - I find it hard to care one way or the other. Either way it won't change the quality of the games.

No, it's just a countdown to the relaunch of the website. You should've read the linked article.
This return to its roots is more than just a new name and logo for Irrational Games. It represents a renewed commitment to the studio's fans, which you can see for yourself at the new irrationalgames.com. The site is currently just a countdown timer, but soon you'll experience an array of cool community features, insight into the game creation process, and never-before-seen tidbits about games like System Shock 2, Freedom Force, and BioShock.

Ah, so they're back to talking about SS2 again rather than pretending it didn't exist.

God only knows what is happening with XCOM but it is likely Irrational aren't (actively) making it since we already know what their next project is. Neither is the other studio rumoured to be, 2kCivilisationFiraxis either, by the sounds of it.

I know for fact that they were working on X-Com, and I'd heard what they had was pretty awesome. But that was nearly two years ago now, so it may have been dropped due to lack of progress.

2K still owns them right? Ken and co haven't bought back the company or anything?
I wonder why 2Ks branding zeal has waned in this instance. (might be in the article)

The gramophone movie for Bioshock was so clearly intended to go with the original circular Irrational Games logo. I'll bet they have the original version somewhere. I wonder if they'd consider releasing it now?

Oh yeah, they definitely were, I even remember Dave Gaidar from Bioware saying he was looking forward to seeing it. Firaxis definitely were as well, though on a different game/ approach. But it seems unlikely either are now if IG is working on Spec Ops (or whatever it's called) as they wouldn't have the manpower to do production on two titles- though I suppose IG Aus should be just about finished on BS2 by now...

Zygo, Irrational having nothing to do with Spec Ops: The Line. That 3PS is being made by German developer Jaeger.

Ah, I stand corrected then. Have to admit I put Spec Ops into the 'not interested' basket pretty much as soon as news of it came out.

Yeah, I was just going to clarify that we do not know what Irrational is working on.

The relaunch of the website seems to be a lot more than just a goodwill move with the community features and historical stuff - I'm very hopeful that they announce their title this month.

    Hi Guys,

In a related note, I thought you guys might be interested to know about Iron Helmet Games, a new independent studio in Australia made up of ex 2K Australia employees (The other half of Irrational Games).

I worked with Ken and Jon for nearly 10 years as a Lead and then Producer on Freedom Force, Tribes, Swat and Bioshock. I learnt allot from them in that time and now I'm using that experience to make my own games in the Irrational Games tradition.

Iron Helmet Games was created to make old school hardcore strategy games. The kinds of games you don't see much any more. We also love games about diplomacy and social interaction so we are building multiplayer games that encourage players to work together.

Our first game Neptune's Pride is in early Beta right now. The games not very "Looking Glass", but if you're interested I'd love you to come and have a look and give us your feedback.
