Deus Ex 1 augmentation questions - how they affect gameplay

I am wondering how much content certain augmentations open up for you.

    Speed enhancement:
This allows you to jump higher, sometimes reaching things you would otherwise not reach. Does anyone have a list of what items and other things you miss out on if you don't take this?

    Microfibrial muscle:
This allows you to move big crates. Does anyone have a list of what items and other things you miss out on if you don't take this?

    Combat strength:
Will taking this let you knockout MJ-12 Commandos in 1 hit with a baton when combined with low tech training?

There are a few things that you will miss, but nothing really more than some ammo and xp points. There will be a lot that's harder to get to if you don't get that augmentation though - but most of it is solved by crate stacking or other ways. In general, I think this upgrade is a lot more useful than Run Silent.

I think you'll miss even less than when you don't install Speed enhancement. There are some puzzles that become easier to solve with that augmentation.

In all my playthroughs I never installed that one, actually. I do know that when you train low tech to the highest, you can knock the Commandos out with your baton without any help of Combat Strength.

Ah, thank you. I am playing for the first time and trying to work out how many things I would miss by skipping augmentations.

I have noticed grunts like to kill me with 1 shot to the face as i'm playing on realistic, so I was wondering if things become harder to baton on higher difficulties. Does a baton without combat strength take every humanoid in the game if low tech is maxed on realistic?

Also does anyone know if there are any mods that only fix bugs, things like laser addon giving 100% accuracy, and scopes breaking lasers, as i'd like to use the laser but with its bug it feels like cheating and I wan't to play the game as the designers intended for now. Many of the mods I can find that seem to fix stuff like this make huge amounts of changes like new weapons and skill points per kill and other stuff that throws off balance.

And dude, about the mods only fixing bugs... none that I know of. Shifter does a lot of this, but changes a HELL of a lot of the core gameplay while it's at it.

I don't have a list, no. However, the main benefit from this aug is not the ability to reach inaccessible places, because there aren't many areas which you can only reach by jumping higher. You can usually gather up crates from around the map and stack them to get where you need to go, find an alternate route, or grenade climb. The biggest benefit is convenience. It saves you from a lot of the tedium of crate stacking and cuts the time you spend running across the larger hub maps. Also, the ability to fall greater distances without taking damage is arguably more important than jumping higher. It's the key to a few rooftop entrances & exits. Finally, this aug allows you to crawl a lot faster than normal while still remaining silent, so there is some benefit to stealth play too. Basically, unless you're a Thief-style dedicated stealth player, you're better off with Speed Enhancement than Run Silent.

No. But again, you shouldn't be too concerned about missing out on something if you choose the wrong aug. Your choice mainly affects how you solve problems. The ability to move large crates will sometimes open up convenient paths to your goal and save you time, but without it you'll just have to rely on other approaches.

    Combat strength:

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure it will if you hit them in the right place. And I know for certain that a riot prod will with sufficient low tech skill.

A major benefit to combining this aug with low tech skill is that with sufficient upgrades and the right weapon you can smash doors and even turrets and cameras, which is pretty nice.

I would choose Combat Strength over Microfibral Muscle no matter what your playstyle is.

Unfortunately, no. Assuming this is your first play, I would play vanilla. I never did like Shifter. Like gunsmoke says, it changes the nature of the gameplay too much.

Important thing to remember with baton attacks: never aim for the head. For reasons unknown, the baton (and the prod) get no multiplier for headshots, and in fact do half the damage they would do if you hit your enemy anywhere else.

Torso shots ftw. Ideally from behind.

    timely reply

    Baton damage: 7
    Untrained Low-tech damage bonus: 0
Combat Strength 1 damage bonus: +25%
Final Baton damage: 8(derp rounding down)

    Torso damage multiplier: x2
    Stealth attack damage multiplier: x10
    8 x2 x10 = 160
    MJ12 Commando health: 250

    So... no
