Thief 2- Eavesdropping trouble

Whenever I begin the mission, a female guard is ALWAYS alerted to my presence the instant the mission begins! Garrett always automatically begins the mission by dropping down on the clangy metal floor. Is this a glitch or is this what everyone else experiences?

Hmmm... it seems to be some weird bug.
Whenever I start Eavesdropping the first time, the guard is NOT alerted.
If I restart the mission, then the guard IS alerted.
It seems that loading the previous mission and pushing CTRL-SHIFT-ALT-DEL (end mission) should help.
Garrett dropping down onto the metal floor is normal.
But for me this is ALWAYS silent - even if the guard gets alerted.
