    Arx Libertatis 1.1.2 released

We have finally reached the first stable release of our updated, cross-platform version of the Arx fatalis code. Check it out at http://arx-libertatis.org/

    Update:

1.0.1: Fixes text rendering bug in 1.0 that breaks the Russian version, a crash on some Linux systems and uses DirectX by default for rendering and input under Windows. You can still select the renderer in the video settings and if you set it to anything other than the default "Auto-Select" nothing will change for you. (announcement)

1.0.2: Fixes various crashes, disappearing items when sorting the inventory, and minor rendering and input bugs. This release also fixes a bug that left the Spanish version with no text. (announcement)

1.0.3: Fixes two regressions introduced in 1.0.2 for Windows users: Crashes on startup after selecting the OpenGL renderer and low mouse sensitivity with the DirectInput backend. There are also fixes for other crashes, rendering glitches, missing speech during cinematics in the Russian and Italian versions, missing ambient sound effects as well as bugs in how some skill values were calculated. (announcement)

1.1: Fixes player movement issues, minimap scaling, and a bunch of crashes and other bugs. We also continued our work on restructuring the engine, to facilitate new features in the future. Further, there is an improved installer for the data files on *nix systems as well as minor graphics and sound tweaks. See the changelog for full details. While we haven't managed to include everything originally planned for 1.1, we felt it was high time for another release after nearly a year of development since 1.0.3. (announcement)

1.1.1: This release is a hotfix addressing a regression introcuded in 1.1, that caused map markers to not be saved correctly and then removed when such a save is loaded. We encourage all users of Arx Libertatis 1.1 to upgrade to 1.1.1 as soon as possible. (announcement)

1.1.2: This is another small hotfix, this time to fix a crash when hovering over map markers after the window size or resolution has changed. (announcement)

I bought Arx in a deal not too long ago with a view to re-playing at some point.

So in a nutshell, what does this do?
I read the changelog, but didn't get a feel for the changes.

The biggest change is support for 64-bit and Linux (and Mac OS X, although there are no binary packages for that). However we also fixed a few bugs and performance issues encountered with modern operating systems (biggest one being the text rendering) and improved UI scaling with widescreen resolutions.

This is awesome! I've been wanting to replay Arx but it wasn't playing very well with my new computer. Will probably try this out this weekend. Great job

Just installed this on Linux Mint 11 64-bit with an ATI graphics card and it works perfectly. Really good job!

Excellent, I'll definitely give this a shot. I never finished Arx and it's been on my to-do list for quite a while. This project should make it a lot easier to get running so kudos to all involved.

Thanks for the heads-up (and the hard work :), and congratulations on the release!

    Arx Libertatis 1.0.1 and 1.0.2

Hi, I'd just like to keep everyone updated on the progress - since 1.0 we have released two patches:

1.0.1: Fixes text rendering bug in 1.0 that breaks the Russian version, a crash on some Linux systems and uses DirectX by default for rendering and input under Windows. You can still select the renderer in the video settings and if you set it to anything other than the default "Auto-Select" nothing will change for you. (full changelog)

1.0.2: Fixes various crashes, disappearing items when sorting the inventory, and minor rendering and input bugs. This release also fixes a bug that left the Spanish version with no text. (full changelog)

Windows and Linux binaries (and source code) are available on the downloads page.

Thank you, dscharrer. There are certainly Arx fans here who are unlikely to see the news elsewhere :) Much appreciated!

Just to be clear: the source code for the game was released, but it's not free itself, correct? I don't want to sound like I'm being super-cheap, but the game being not free will push it down my list of priorities for now, until I've played other games that I have already paid for .

  14. #14
Yes, that's correct. FYI the game costs $5.99 at GOG.com (and is sometimes discounted further). http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/arx_fatalis

Edit: See http://arx.parpg.net/Getting_the_game_data, and note that you can also play the free demo version via Arx Libertatis.

This is awesome. Love it. Works pretty well save for the frame-drop bug and slow cursor. But I already mentioned those on the IRC.

For instance, for the next 24 hours, when it is $2.39, due to this: http://www.gog.com/en/page/2012_summer_promo

I recommend taking advantage of that while the offer lasts.

    This is so awesome!
I´ve bought Arx on Steam two days ago to finally play it for the first time.
Irritatingly the mouse look and the total feel of the game was jerky and jittery so that I certainly wouldn´t have played it like that.
Arx Libertatis totally fixed these issues for me and plays/feels great!

Thanks for your efforts and keep up the good work!

    Cheers,
    Christian

That's really good to hear. I actually caved when I saw Arx was $2 on Steam... then Steam wouldn't accept my credit card. So I bought it from GoG instead . I'll probably check out Arx Liberatis soon - IIRC, AL reads AF save files, right?

(Was disappointed to read that the inventory hasn't been 'fixed' yet. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but having to drag around items individually rather than a stack at a time gets old fast. That aside, I really love this game.)

Yes. But AL save files cannot be read by AF.

You can shift+drag stacks of items in both AF and AL. Only shift-dragging stacks to the ground doesn't work (yet).

Oh, I feel dumb. That makes things much easier. I didn't think the developers would overlook something as obvious as that!

Yeah, some of the actions really are not easy to find. For example you can sort the inventory by double-clicking the inventory icon or open all bags at the same time by pressing the use key (F, Enter) while the mouse is over the inventory icon. I'm not sure yet how to best tell the player about these shortcuts.

    Another release:

1.0.3: Fixes two regressions introduced in 1.0.2 for Windows users: Crashes on startup after selecting the OpenGL renderer and low mouse sensitivity with the DirectInput backend. There are also fixes for other crashes, rendering glitches, missing speech during cinematics in the Russian and Italian versions, missing ambient sound effects as well as bugs in how some skill values were calculated. (announcement)

Any input in the skill / stat / spell modifications discussed in the announcement is appreciated.

I am very glad to see that there are still people who wish to keep Arx from fading into the past. Thank you.

Say, is the white texture bug fixed? That was the only major problem I had with original Arx Fatalis, last time I played it, which was maybe a year ago.

I never experienced that one myself so I can't say for sure - and I don't think whe had a fix specifically for it.

However, we changed a lot in the low-level rendering code (AL no longer uses DX7 but DX9 or OpenGL), especially in the texture loading code, so chances are it's gone.

I've got a couple good hours clocked in, and have yet to see a single pure white texture or any other weird bug. The game runs beautifully, and (as of writing) has yet to randomly crash on me like default Arx used to.

The only complaint I have is that the backback UI is a little too small at 1920x1080. Being able to resize the scale would definitely help here.

    Other than that, it's grand.
