Some nice ones there to be sure.

It's funny; I've played DXHR (and of course DX), MP3, SS2, Braid, Homeworld and Hotline Miami off that list. The music is so much more meaningful to me than the other stuff, just because I played the games, and so I like it better.

For example, Mass Effect's Uncharted Worlds is exactly the kind of thing I like but as much as I like it I prefer the music from the games I've played.

I think if I were going to pick a track from Bastion, I'd go with Mia's theme. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8cELTdtw6U

I skimmed through both threads, some good soundtracks from multiple games. But I can't believe this one never came up:

Rise of the Triad - I Choose the Stairs

    ROTT OST is fantastic.

Judith, that list is awesome. (I am pleased that you like Shells from Max Payne 3, it was great and well-fitting)

Also, why did not anyone included anything from Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory? And one of the earliest Rainbow Six had amazing OST, also Hitman 2. (sorry, I can't remember particular tracks)

    Thanks guys.

Hmm, how come I don't have that ost in my collection any more..? I'd definitely pick this one:

Amon Tobin - El cargo http://youtu.be/s9-FU-1YoUU

I think it works on several levels, like I have a lot of great memories from Mass Effect saga, I spent like 150-200 hours with all three games, so listening to the OST is more meaningful to me - remembering my story, being sad it's all over (despite the shitty ending in ME3, that is) etc.

Still, I have a few soundtracks for games I've never played or finished, and they are relevant to me (and can be relevant to anyone else IMO). The composition, structure and choice of instruments ("the language of music", forgive me the cheesy phrase) is understandable to everyone, at least to some extent. I never played Bastion for example, but most of these tracks are doing well on their own. The idea of two separate songs that intertwine in the end is a pretty straightforward and self-explanatory. You don't need to play the game to understand what kind of closure the two characters had in the end.

MGS3 is another good example, I haven't played that until it was released as MGS Collection on X360, but I got the OST when it was released. Still I had no difficulty in noticing the nods to old MG/MGS themes, winks at classical music, MASH-era style scores, 60s/70s vintage guitar sound and all this pop-cultural mashup, being basically a sonic representation of what Kojima & Co. always do on the story/gameplay level.

Sure, there are plenty of negative examples as well, e.g. I really liked the heavy stuff on DmC, but only after skipping through that Combichrist album on my player did I realize how pathetic copypaste that band is

This came up on the first page and I just really had to agree with it. Red Alert's "Hell March" is easily in my Top 3 best game songs of all time.

I've been playing this for the past 3 days pretty much continuously. It won't leave my head, and now I feel I the need to play the game. I hear it's not great, but with Olivier Deriviere behind the soundtrack, it's certainly got that going for it. I'll have to get the game for that alone, not least because it has a wealth of tunes, but the official OST only has three tracks in total (!).

A recent favourite is the Steamworld Heist soundtrack, which, it turns out, is by a band of real-life steampunk weirdos.

Some of my favourites, in no particular order:

    Gothic 2 "Old World"
    Trine: "Tower of Sarek"
    Trine 2: "The Giant Dragon"
Divinity: Original Sin: "Beyond the Waves of Time"
    Deus Ex: "Main title theme"
Drakan: Order of the Flame: "The Dark Union"
    Starcraft: "Terran 2"
    Doom 2: "Endgame"
Vampire: Bloodlines "Isolated" (Not sure if this counts, due to being an actual song and not made for the game. Otherwise, "Disturbed and Twisted")

I'm a fan of the track "World Skill", especially the way it was used for the timed escape segment on Sunder.

    Awesome thread!

    Transistor - In Circles

    Hitman Contracts - SWAT Team

Also, in Hitman Contracts there is a bar, where this song plays
    Puressence - Walking Dead
I discovered them through Hitman Contracts and now it's one of my favorite bands.

Hotline Miami 2 - Roller Mobster
Don't know if it counts, though, since it's wasn't written for this game.

Super Meat Boy - Dr. Fetus' Castle

Related to this, I started listening to Chiasm after hearing her track in Vampire Bloodlines (as linked above).

This makes me want to ally with Austria just to counterbalance the French onslaught.

Damn, I'm so listening to that when I leave the house later on. I've never played Hotline Miami 2, though.

Both Hotline Miami games are awesome. And it's only a taste of how great the music there is

I've never played games on an Amiga, but it seems to have been the platform of choice for great game soundtracks. That Menace intro is pretty great. As is the Gods intro.

The Psygnosis intros ruled, at least at the time. I recently watched some on YouTube and could barely remember why I thought they were so great back then, but back in the Amiga days they were the best intros by far.

Not sure how well they hold up, but I liked a lot of the music written for Origin games. Ultima (especially 7, Serpent Isle and 8 - not a great game but fantastic music), Wing Commander, but I also have a soft spot for Times of Lore's intro tune on the C-64. In general, I think I remember a lot of C-64 music more fondly, and more strongly, than what came on the Amiga. I love how the greats - Hülsbeck, Galway, Hubbard etc. - worked with the limitations of the SID chip.

Compositionally, U7-8's themes hold up if you've got a decent MIDI sequencer running them. U7's are fairly simplistic, but pleasant enough still. 8's music still evokes its eerie twilight vibe, though MIDI really does it no favours. And, of course, Stones remains the series' bonafide classic.

I've always been especially partial to U7's Fellowship theme.

    Damn it forgot Cybernoid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYQ9zUWVG4o

    And Spellbound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozr54lqRoBc

    The Last Ninja: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOmin4vmMts

    Crazy Comets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbQoQFLM_1s

I'm guessing a lot of this is nostalgia, but it's amazing what they did with C64 music.

I made myself a tape of C-64 greats, which included Cybernoid and The Last Ninja (the second game, if I remember correctly). Definitely still enjoy some of those tunes.

While it's very different, Assassin's Creed Syndicate also had some very nice music, and pretty different from the usual generic Hollywood-style stuff you tend to get in AAA games.

And I have a soft spot for "You Were There", the song at the end of ICO.
