I've tried using some miracles, some sorceries....even the pyromancies do less damage than single strike with my upgraded claymore.
Apart from sorceries scaling with INT, miracles with FAITH, pyromancies with both, the actual catalyst contributes too. Look at the "spell buff" attribute when upgrading. Also the pyromancy glove can be upgraded.

Additionally, you can get extra oompfh from the sorcery staff Skill (L2) before casting.

    A few more bosses defeated.

Actually made a video of fighting the last boss (this guy killed me quite a few times for some reason):

Right now at SL54 with the halberd upgraded to +6 (haven't found any chunks yet).

Got a few more bosses under my belt all the way to the Dancer and her deadly sword choreography.

Going back to the Profaned Capital to finish exploring it. I haven't found any terrible boss fights yet, just two or three that were a bit underwhelming. The straight-on swordfighter ones are awesome and crazy.

On the whole I'm enjoying it, but I have to agree, I wish bonfire teleportation came mid game, like in the original, and only limited to a few key bonfires.

And leveling up at bonfires instead of talking to the boring Firekeeper. They somehow made her even less interesting than the Emerald Herald ...

Levelling up just at the shrine is totally redundant since you can travel there from any bonfire, so I agree - why not just level up at bonfire? It's just a needless extra step without any variety or even an interesting mechanism added.

I've made it to Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. Those Pontif Knights are the worst. Here are some screenshots.

Nice screenshots! And your character looks ultra-cool wearing the Mirrah set

Yeah, it's weird that they persist in this since Dark Souls 2. It would help if the Fire Keeper had more dialogue, or if there were more events in Firelink Shrine in general.

Well, there's certainly a few things going on in Firelink this time for sure, but I agree with the general concensus that to leveling in the bonfires should have been brought back.

On a side note, I'm quite curious to see what Hidetaka and company cook up for the DLC.

For the people who've finished the game so far, what are your top 3 bosses?

Henke - Yeah, the pontif knights are a pain, especially when paired with the fire witches.

Being able to level up from any bonfire would be nice, but if anything, DS1 is the odd man out in the entire series in this regard. Guess From really likes people having to talk to someone to level up.

I've been using that for most of the game so far -- it's relatively light and has decent protection against most types of attack.

I actually find the new version of the Shrine a little depressing, which I think is a result of the choice of music, dead ends and a lack of conversation options for most of the characters.

And we need a fashion thread, not another Mega but in the meantime...

    Thanks for the helmet buddy.

Guess I need to do a bit more exercise.

^That evangelist robe+thrall hood looks pretty nice I also took some screenshots on the PS4.

I can't decide who's my favourite boss as I've gone back and redone some fights as summon a lot and I'm starting to like some fights more than I did first time in. Such as the animated armor and the two princes.

But two fights I must've done a thousand times by now are the Pontiff and Dancer fights. A lot less Dancer lately, because it takes more time and perseverance. But there are elements there that I really, really love. Like how the music reacts to the phases of the fight, and how her footsteps kinda create this beat for the music. It's so serene.

And the Pontiff fight is anything but. Finding clean openings is still, after all these times, hard. Many of his attacks feel like they reach 360 so you're not safe even behind him. And when he splits to two and you have the aggro on you for both, not even greatshields are going to help you for long.

I made a new STR character and keep him at SL50 just so I can get summoned more often for Pontiff. His name is Karju, and he wields a Heavy Great Club +9 and a Stone Greatshield +8. And not much else He plays very differently from my first character, who, for the longest time, had only 14 VIG and didn't use a shield. You can imagine it got frustrating at some point when just about everything killed me in one shot.

Just being able to level up at the shrine would make sense as a game mechanic (i.e. adds pressure to hanging on to souls > tension (maybe would be too frustrating, but there you go) I assume this is how it was done in DeS, which I've never played), being able to level at bonfires makes sense, but being able to only level up in a place which is accessible from every bonfire is just extra time padding which can only add tedium. It's just an additional loading screen and some dialogue which you invariably skip after the first 2 times hearing it.

And when they actually say something new you miss it, because you're automatically mashing Skip when talking to them.

I finished the game a day ago or so (have one optional boss left), and my opinion didn't change. I think the combat/animations/most of gameplay mechanics in DS2 were better. The areas, bosses and enemies were fine for the most part, and I liked most of the music as well. Had way too many callbacks and fanservice for my tastes, and the multiplayer is glitchy as hell. Though the latter can be fixed, so let's hope that happens.

My char was an INT build, which was like asking for trouble, though it kind of worked out in the latter half of the game, where I just abused Hidden Body and sneak backstabbed everything or nuked them from a distance. I used the Abyss Watcher armor/gloves, elite knight pants and brigand headwear for fashion most of the time. My favorite bosses (on first impression at least) were Deacons, Abyss Watchers and Yhorm. Coop-ed most of the bosses, the ones I soloed were Demon King, Wolnir, Dragonslayer, Oceiros and Ancient Wyvern.

Started a second character now and things are going much smoother, probably because I pumped vigor to 20 right at the start. Had 18 for most of the game on my first char and it sucked. The Dragonslayer fight made me realize the error of my ways, with him straight-up oneshotting me with half of his attacks. Never again. This char will be a STR build, and I'll try to not use hidden body and learn to fight the late game mobs this time.

My favorite boss(es) are the Twin Princes, mostly because of the lore, the music, their cutscenes and drama. But the fight itself was great too, and it somehow reminded me of Maiden Astraea and Garl Vinland from Demon's Souls.

The Nameless King is the second one, because of who he is and how impressive the boss battle looks like. The camera during the fight sucks, though!

Pope Sulyvahn is number three, because he's the main sonofabitch/motherfucker of this game's events, and killing him off is extremely satisfying . Also the music! But he lacks an introductory cutscene IMO

Honorable mention goes to the game's final boss, because that fight's something I've dreamt of since finishing Demon's Souls .

I just love the Abyss Watchers fight. A band of brothers who linked the fire as a team, forced by madness/corruption to eternally fight between themselves... coupled with the music, it's just one of the most memorable experiences I've had with games.

Abyss Watchers are awesome. I don't know why I forgot about them. The build-up leading to their fight is also amazing. I also like how they're both an homage to Guts from Berserk and to Artorias (who's also an homage to Guts ).

I saw the funniest thing on the face of the earth the other day. I invaded this one guy, being an ass, as usual, and while there, I found I wasn't the only one invited to this soiree.

Standing right in front of me was another red phantom. Instead of deciding to ruin some random guy's game via jolly cooperation (olol, see what I did there), he decided to rush me straight up. We fight, and I kick his ass. It was a glorious beatdown. I do my little victory dance, and get ready to look for my intended victim when I see...hey, another red phantom.

This guy manages to puts up a good fight. We both hit like Mack trucks, and dodge gracefully. There were a number of times when both of us were right on death's door. I guess after a bit, we both get tired of the fight, and go all out on each other. Unfortunately for me, he manages to get the last hit in, with just a sliver of health remaining on his HP bar.

I see him give me the knight's salute as I'm fading away. But before I go, I see a sunbro pop up over the steps just behind us, throw a dagger, and takes that last sliver off, killing him in one hit while he's mid-emote. He starts a little victory dance right as I go.

    It was great!

Almost forgot to update...finished the game one or two days ago. Loved it, though my fave will always be DS 1 <3

Many bosses I co-oped, but I hope to solo them all in the next playthrough.

I got the alternate dark ending where you kill the Maiden of Ash. :3

And yes, the Soul of Cinder was indeed a worthy final boss. Great ending to a great series

Decided my sorceror character wasn't what I wanted so I re-rolled the assassin (mostly because the spook spell sounds like a cool thing to have from the beginning). Holy shit the estoc is over-powered. Decided to switch to the Hollowslayer Greatsword instead, whose move set is great.
Anyone else notice that using shields in this game is far less effective than rolling? I only ever use a shield as something to have on my back to buff me (currently using a blessed shield for the HP regain on hit).
Also, I've realised that the best way to get lots of souls with no risk is to just keep dropping your white soap stone sign as you progress through a level - some asshole will always decide to summon you. You get all of the souls from their kills and yours during the summon and you get dropped right back where you left on when the summon ends.

Here's me utterly decimating The Dancer on NG+. I almost made it through the entire fight without taking a single hit, but she had to get that stupid cheap shot in near the very end.

See, guys? It weren't no braggadocio! I just are dat gud!

For some reason the regular poise system is turned off. Coupled with the generally faster, more aggressive enemies this makes shields a lot less useful, since blocking is bound to get you staggered and stunlocked.

Nice work. One of the most masterfully designed bosses in the series imho.
