Thief: The Dark Project 20th Anniversary Contest!

With Thief: The Dark Project’s 20th anniversary coming exactly a year from now, to the day, a few of us figured it would be a nice idea to have a contest! Since this only concerns Thief TDP, we thought that making it a TDP/Gold exclusive contest and restricting contestants to use stock resources would be a great way to celebrate the release, theme and legacy of one of the best games ever made.

Starting today, you have exactly one year to build a mission for Thief TDP/Gold using stock resources. Please read the detailed rules below, for a select few custom resources are allowed for convenience’s sake. This year-long building period also includes beta-testing, so manage it carefully!

    Rules:
    - The mission(s) must be for Thief TDP/Gold.
    - Collaborations are allowed.
    - Contestants are limited to stock resources but can use custom gamesys (for custom schemas, scripts, unused objects etc…) as long as the mission doesn’t use any resources other than the stock ones.
    - Contestants can create texture families using the textures found in OBJ.CRF (useful for fake doors!)
    - Contestants can combine existing stock textures to create new ones (terrain/objects/meshes). New textures need to be clearly identifiable as stock derivatives. A description of which textures you used to create new ones is welcome.
    - Contestants can use the reskinnable meshes provided in the optional resource pack.
    - Contestants can use the base street sign texture provided in the optional resource pack to name their street(s).
    - Contestants can use NewSky to have better starfields and can use one celestial object maximum. Distant Art and Cloud Deck are forbidden. Celestial object textures are provided for contestants to use in the optional resource pack.
    - Contestants can use custom scripts (NVScript, Squirrel, etc).
    - Contestants can submit more than one mission.
    - Contestants can enter anonymously.
    - Contestants can use custom in-game maps for their mission(s).
    - Contestants can use video briefings.
    - Contestants can create new arrangements using stock sound files only.
    - Contestants can use custom voice lines (new Garrett or guard lines for example).
    - Contestants can NOT use Room weather effects and fogging.
    - The mission(s) can be of any size.
    - The mission(s) can take advantage of NewDark. This includes: more polys and objects in view, different ambient light zones, T2 sunlight, colored lighting, etc.

    Optional resource pack: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ik...t1QmOMGMkLdnrL
This archive includes a template mission file with a basic setup, a base street sign texture, the moon textures and stars.bin from Thief 2, reskinnable 1998 low-res meshes and a repaired version of snakstat.bin by FireMage, originally a broken object in Thief Gold’s OBJ.CRF.
The reason why the moon is available is simply to allow contestants to have skies that aren’t just moonless starfields.

    Deadline: November 30th, 2018.

    Submission:
Please submit your missions to me through private messaging.
The archive must be named TDP20AC_yourmissionname.zip. Make sure your missions are tested before submitting them!

    Voting period:
The voting period will start on November 30th, 2018 and end on January 1st, 2019. Results will then be announced along with the unveiling of the identities of potential anonymous entrants, as well as the publishing of voters’ comments.

    General tips:
    - There are quite a few unused assets in the game’s CRFs. I recommend you check them out, you may find some cool stuff!
    - You can find a thread with allowed custom resources created by contestants here: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthrea...=1#post2378245
    - Checking out the pre-release screenshots of Thief 1 is sometimes a good way to find inspiration (you can find these screenshots here: http://darkfate.org/view/simple/imag...enshots/thief1)
    - The contest is organized with good old 1998 vanilla visuals in mind. It’d be best if your mission was designed without HD mods, texture replacements or enhancement packs.
    - Since this contest is restricted to stock resources you don’t really need to go too crazy on the level of detail.
    - Remember that Thief 1 doesn’t support optional objectives! All objectives are mandatory as soon as they're activated!

    Happy DromEding!

This sounds like a great idea and I'll definitely enter the contest as Thief 1 is my strongsuit

It'll be a challenge to use stock-only resources but should be fun to see how much I can do with the stock resources

Thank you for putting this contest together Skacky. TDP has rather been over shadowed by T2 in recent years, so hopefully this contest may re-invigorate the better of the Thief games.

@ Goldwell, I so look forward to your entry, you have made some brillant TDM missions, so I'll be very interested to see what you produce for TDP.

ps Authors don't forget TDP does not have secrets either.

@ Skacky. Will you be making TDP Thief lore an important voting criteria, if so authors need to be aware of this when building their missions.

Hmm, I like thief 1, but should I make a FM? how different is dromed 1 to dromed 2? I know I have started to learn dromed with thief 1 but this was 2004.

I like this contest idea , im actually working currently on a TDP mission style for T2, but i think ill have it ready much before Christmas in the next year, maybe i can work on another TDP mission style for this contest. Something to think about.

No, I don't think lore will factor. While the missions must be for TDP/TG there is no real restriction when it comes to use of the theme. You can have your mission be totally unrelated to the original game's plot and lore if you wish.
Voting criteria will most probably be the usual quality, adherence to the theme and fun factor.

    Great Idea

    Skacky:

Great idea. We really need some TDP/TG missions. I have a T2 rooftop mission in testing and was thinking about a TG mission for my next one. I really like the idea of having a lot of time to actually build it. I always seem to be in the middle of a mission when contests come up and can't do 2 missions at the same time [I am not like Yandros who seems to be working on 10 things at the same time ], but this seems perfect. Dare I throw my hat in the ring with Skacky and Yandros? If Melan agrees to do a mission, I may run for the hills!

I will think about this but likely I am in.

ps: Skacky, I love your missions. Are you going to submit a mission to the contest?

The timing is good for my playing TDP/TG missions [which I do for fun while I am building]. I have played all of them and have replayed the TDP missions. I am now replaying the TG missions but will run out in 2018. It will be terrific to have some new missions to play at the end of next year.

If anyone needs help setting up Thief 1 or Gold for editing, check the installation directions in the first post of the Dromed Basic Toolkit page. Very helpful.

I'm hoping to get an entry in for this, already have some ideas floating around in me head. Thanks for doing this skacky.

Glad you're likely in, BBB! I know from talking to them that the following other folks are at least as of now planning to enter:
Random_Taffer, skacky, Firemage, Squadafroinx, DrK, Melan, Nayru, and brethren. The Feuillade team (The Black Parade folks) might even do another entry as a team thing if they have time. Holy cow folks, get excited! Join us, join us now!

SKacky, can i use this costum skyboxe for the contest mission? it was made by a French artist:

I have read the rules, and I think it is better to use the original thief 1 stuff so I can make no mistake to break a rule, right? The only thing to use is NewDark and set up the limit like poly, objects etc.

Don't run for the hills - make a mission instead!

And yes, I made a (probably foolhardy) promise to some people that if the contest is happening, I'm participating. A promise is a promise.

I think I might participate, too. Been too long since I made my first mission for the NewDark Novice Contest.

@Cardia: skacky will have to confirm, but I believe that sky-wise, you are only allowed to use the default T1 sky or the T2 stars.bin and moons which are included in the optional resource pack. Your custom skybox would be considered a custom resource.

Yandros is right, you can't use this skybox.
@bbb: glad you're entering! Yes I'll be making a mission for this.

Technically, you can create custom ressources using the stock ressources as a base, like blending 2 textures to create a new one, swapping colors, mixing 12 textures inbetween them to create a new AI skin... As long as the base material can still be recognised. You just can't add anything exterior to Thief Dark Project or Gold, but you can already go wild with existing textures.

    And I'm in, btw
