I guess I'm really late here, but I want to say this: 2017 was an excellent year for horror in general. Especially of the executive kind you get when you turn on the news.

I also guess I missed out on mentioning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, which is well worth anyone's time if they want to live out a slice of a deeply personal nightmare. It classifies as horror, but not as we traditionally know it, and for that alone it's a singular achievement. The gameplay isn't so hot, but putting that aside, its steady unfurling of Senua's trials made me feel as ragged and lost and bereft as she did during its last act, with an emotionally honest ending that's both an absolution and a reminder of the difficulties most of us are blessed not to have in our lives.

There's a bunch of other things that round it out, like the sheer quantity of loot drops that turns it into Diablo, the weapon/armor crafting and upgrading systems
Combos and Diablo-esque wading through loot? You're doing a fine job at talking me out of playing Nioh here, Sulphur! I love Souls-esque combat, but learning combos and getting timings right and whatnot? Ehhhhhh, no.

Ruiner and West of Loathing sound pretty good though. I think I'll take Nioh of my "Still to play" list and replace it with those.

Heh, I'm afraid so. You get an up to 500-item inventory pool that's divided amongst your five armour slots, two weapon slots, two ranged item slots, and two accessory slots, not to mention your usable items and skills that go into the d-pad quick-use slots. It would quickly get ridiculous if you didn't have options to sort all of it in terms of level/newness/rarity per slot or all together, so it's not a complete pain in the ass, but yeah, it's not exactly fun.

Don't let the combos turn you off though - it's not Bayonetta. No button mashing, they're fairly easy to pull off and some of them offer good tactical uses, like, well, parrying. Some of them basically let you instantly switch to a high stance-strong attack if you're on a lower stance, for example. It's pretty useful stuff.

The Ki pulse mechanic's the best thing ever though: I get why you may not like the sound of that, and it's (kinda) optional, but if you can get used to it, the way it threads through each encounter makes the combat come alive. I keep coming back to the game just for the tactile feel of its combat, if you can believe that. This isn't the ponderous and considered combat of DS1/2 - it's faster, and I'd say closer to Bloodborne if we're rooting around the Miyazakiverse.

Ah, don't worry about it. I've been dragging my feet on getting to Nioh because I think I'm kinda done with Souls-likes anyway. Not much interest in The Surge either, and I haven't even bothered finishing DS3.

I own it; I played it a while ago. This play of the original game was a replay on the Genesis version, in 3-player co-op no less!

Yes, if a little frustrating at times. We were playing on original hardware, so no savestates available. Several later levels took MANY tries.

It was super convenient for early levels where we all coordinate together. A bit less so for later levels where we have to split up anyways. The game also does this thing where your controls are locked out if you are off screen. The springboards in the factory level caused a bit of issue with this sometimes. You also need to use the A+B+C button combination to switch who scrolls the screen. This can sometimes lead to accidental actions when switching. A bit disappointing, considering the normal switch character buttons (X and Z on Genesis) do nothing in three-player mode.

Having just completed Prey I now have something to add to my Outstanding category for 2017. Definitely game for the year for me.

    What I loved
    - Great story
    - The 2 main plot twists
    - Tight and varied gameplay options
    - Level design
    - Audio

    Minor issues
    - Art Deco again? C'mon Arkane, it's starting to look a bit derivative now.
    - Most of the aliens looked the same
    - Inconsistent interface functionality: sometimes F, sometimes left-click instead.

I know some people here (probably Evaunit) will watch this and groan. But me? It made me laugh. It is funny, and it is good.

So, I'm about to wrap up my thesis, which has absorbed most of my attention (and life) for the last year, and now I'll have time to catch up with all the games I missed out on. On that note, if you were allowed to keep only three games from 2017 and would lose everything else, what games would you pick?

As in "having already played these games, which do you wanna be able to play again"?

As much as I loved Prey, Lone Echo, and Shadow Tactics I'm fine with letting them go, as I feel I've pretty much gotten all I can out of them. Rain World I'd definitely keep, as I kinda feel like I've only scratched the surface of it yet. Mario+Rabbids I still wanna finish, so that one. Aaaaand... oh boy, Mario Odyssey or Zelda? Both have more to give, but if I gotta pick one, it's Zelda.

Dead Cells is a definite pick for me. Not sure about which of the rest I want over the others because I liked all of the ones I listed in this thread.

...Edith Finch, which was like a real videogame adaptation of Gone Home
Dammit, I spilled my coffee while laughing. And I liked GH

What's your preferred genre(s), though? I'd say Hellblade was a highlight for me, but it might not be so hot if you're averse to games with only competent gameplay, for instance.

Prey, Death Of The Outsider, and...erm...Cuphead? The English localisations of Zwei II or Trails In The Sky The 3rd? I have no idea. Definitely Prey and DotO though.

@Starker - I'd go with BOTW, Hollow Knight, and Prey. That was over 300 hours of gaming for me in 2017.

For me, it's more about the game than the genre. I play nearly everything outside of console exclusives, VR games, racing games, and flight sims, since I don't have the equipment for those. Though, I did enjoy Burnout Paradise a lot even with a basic controller.

It'd be Breath of the Wild, Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, and River City Ransom Underground for me, and that's only including the games that came out in 2017. If I were to include games I only first played this year, it'd be a much longer list.
