Man, you 'Friscans a touchy bunch.

    Here's the gameplay trailer:

Which features more cuts and jumping around than a Michael Bay movie, so it feels pretty high-octane and chaotic watching it, kinda like a Mad Max^3. Still not enough info to assess if this is going to be as fun/interesting as I hoped the first Rage would be, so we'll see. 2019's a bit of a ways away.

Hrm. Interesting that Avalanche are getting top billing, not id.

More than a little DOOM 2016 in there, which is great. Hope they extend that to the cars too somehow.

Oh yes. Double jumps, mega jumps, ground pounds. And is that some kinda telekinetic blast at 0:59? Anyway, it looks like a good time!

Basically Crysis 2/3 nanosuit abilities and Destiny supers. Looking great, definitely one for the Steam wishlist!

Ooh, an open-world shooter. Never seen one of those before.

I thought one of the biggest strengths of the first game was that it was based around discrete missions. And the biggest weakness was basically everything outside of those missions.

I just realised that if the game is being worked on by a 3rd party studio this sets a precedent that Zenimax are still open to working with external developers. I.e. An Obsidian partnership could possibly still happen in future.

I think the ship has sailed for a Fallout 4.5 on the US West Coast, since the Creation/Bethesbryo Engine has very possibly been taken out back and shot. (Starfield is rumoured to using a heavily modified IdTech build.)

If this is true, it's the gamedev news of the goddamn decade. Bethesda using a version of idTech 6 to create their environments means less shonkiness and more freedom for the art team to shine instead of being shackled to an ossified codebase that still can't do seamless exteriors and interiors. If anyone could make megatextures really sing, it'd be Beth's art team.

The main thing is that it runs like dog shit on today's platforms. Eg Fallout 4 would hit 0 fps spikes on Xbox 1 in Diamond City. That sort of shit wouldn't happen in Unreal 4, unless the developers were hideously incompetent (like the Xbox 1 PUBG team).

Why do I have a feeling that this will be just like every other bombastic, over-the-top open world shooter?

I mean, I'm not giving up on it just yet but, unlike most people apparently, everytime I see this loud, "comedic" badassery I'm just turned off immediately. I know, it's not cool to like more serious stuff these days, everything has to be a big joke for some reason but I personally don't like that. Maybe I'm just weird.

Other than the TV game show side-quests and John Goodman's character the first Rage was quite po-faced, this looks to be more of the same but with far more kinetic movement. It seems more like you're falling victim to the marketing, fast cuts and high tempo punk rock have pulled the wool over your eyes.

I quite liked the racing bits. Those were quite fun.

That's why I'll reserve my judgement for when I see the proper gameplay. I wasn't really interested in the first RAGE either before seeing uninterrupted gameplay segments. Then again, this WILL be all about being a total badass, no? Nanotrite super powers, double jumping, explosions everywhere.

So? You can still have highly kinetic and high action gameplay but still have a po-faced narrative and setting. Far Cry 3+, Crysis series, Titanfall 2 and the sci-fi futuristic CoDs all say hi.

    INT. E3 INTERVIEW ROOM

GEOFF KEIGHLEY is sitting at a table next to a life-size Flamin' Hot Cheetos puff that no one attempts eye contact with or acknowledges the existence of. Seated across from him are ID SOFTWARE and AVALANCHE STUDIOS REPS . The AVALANCHE STUDIOS REP is looking directly at the camera. He does not blink.

GEOFF KEIGHLEY: So that Rage 2 trailer, really strong stuff. Now is it my imagination or are there some real Vietcong 2 vibes in there?

    IDSOFT REP: It's your imagination.

GEOFF KEIGHLEY: Right. So you guys are making a sequel to a game that no one really asked for.

    IDSOFT:

AVALANCHE REP: (continues staring at camera) Tagga ned, man.

GEOFF KEIGHLEY: So tell me about this partnership with Avalanche. In a historic first you're working with another studio...

    IDSOFT: They're working with us.

GEOFF KEIGHLEY: Right. So how have you shared responsibilities in co-authoring this game?

IDSOFT: We're responsible for the engine, mostly. Also the modelling, animation, level design, story concept, gameplay mechanics, and mission design. Along with QA.

GEOFF KEIGHLEY: So you're saying Avalanche did the vehicle design...

IDSOFT: No. We subcontracted that to an outside vendor.

GEOFF KEIGHLEY: Um. Then what is Avalanche responsible for, exactly?

    IDSOFT:

GEOFF KEIGHLEY: Okay, that just sounds like nothing to me. (turns to AVALANCHE REP) So why are you part of this game's development, again?

    AVALANCHE REP: ...Just Cause

    GEOFF KEIGHLEY:

    EXT. E3 FLOOR

    CROWD (all together): Awwwww snap.

Okay, so let me get this straight. The guys who made the Just Cause series and Renegade Ops are teaming up with Id to make an open world FPS game with Doom style gameplay?

Well, I just nut in my pants!

The first had an interesting aesthetic - kind mad max crossed with Battle Angel Alita. My favorite level was the horror level Dead City.

No texture pop-in with an nvidia ghx card if I recall, but it ran something awful on ATI. There was a patch to fix the crippling performance issues a few weeks after launch (at least for Nvidia machines) and then a fire sale to try to save face. I got it for $20 and felt like I got my money's worth.

That said the open world elements / racing were easily the weakest parts of the game and that was at a time when open worlds weren't done to death yet. I feel like this IP would work better as a linear level based shooter like Half Life.
