DirectX 8..should I install it or not?
I see that they have released the new DirectX. Now I was curious if I should stay with my 7 or install 8? Any opinions?

If you planing on playing a game that needs D8 then yeah..but otherwise you dont really need to upgrade to 8 when you buy a game it should come with D8 so that wouldnt be a problem to worry about but if its there and you just think that would it hurt to upgrade to 8?...No its no biggy just that it wont do much for any game cuz D8 inst supported by any game yet. "that i know of"

Same here. No problem whatsoever when playing Thief1 or Thief2, and more important, using Dromed 1 and 2 (haven't tried ShockEd, but would assume that too will work).
(and if my calculations is correct, this should be my 300'th post. Oh my, isn't I feeling special now..

From the information on gametalk forum on Half Life, most DirectX 8 users have to uninstall it and reinstall DirectX 7.

I saw that game on GameSpot TV... look totally awesome. Do you recommend a demo DL?

Yeah Lazurus, its alot of fun. Ive only actually played it a few times so far as Ive run out of HD space
, but I was quite impressed. The engine that it uses copes very well with outdoor terrain, though its not as graphically stimulating as Sacrifice. When I get my new HD Ill reinstall it again and Ill have a better opinion than.

Since there is doubt here and there, I'll certainly NOT be installing DX8 for at least quite a while

If your main interest is paying Thief, and your current version of DirectX works fine, than why bother. If you have newer software that uses the newer DirectX, than upgrade.
Me, I'm an adventurous soul. Thief ran just fine with DirectX 6.0, but I upgraded to V.7, and then V.8 with (much to my surprise) no improvement or degradation. Why not, it's a free Windows upgrade.
But, and the caution is this. If anything goes wrong, you can't uninstall it and go back to a previous version. Do you trust Bill Gates with your computer?

DX8 CAN be uninstalled. I haven't done it, but there are freeware programs out there that will uninstall it for you
