Vote for the Arx Fatalis Box Cover

Arkane/Fishtank were kind enough (smart enough ) to ask TTLG to vote on the Arx Fatalis box cover (actually, I suggested it ) ... so we are presented with two choices.

Hopefully they will use our advice. The more votes, the better, of course.

I've decided not to use a "neither" option, because they have to use one of these two images. Note that number 2 is actually the game loading screen. The final composition of either of these images (re: the game title, where it will be, what it will look like) is not yet known (i.e. number 2's title placement and appearance does not totally reflect the title on the box cover).

These images were drawn by none other then Denis Loubet, the artist who painted the Underworld 1 & 2 covers, as well as Shadow Caster and many others.

Box covers sell the game. Choose wisely.

IMO, neither of these pics would make an interesting box cover.

They're not bad at all, though not exactly what I had in mind for box-art...but, if I have to choose, I'll pick the second for $500.

#1 because you'll also see #2 when loading, but #2 is a great image presaging mystery and SWAG!!

One looks more like manual-filler, while two shows that its the loading screen a little too easily. Of the two of them, the second looks like it'd make the best box.

I really think they ought to try to whip up some art that has mystery and doesn't look like the cover of a third-party Dungeons and Dragons module.

The second cover is the best of the two, although a head-on shot with the light behind him/her would probably work better on a box cover.

The first cover is simply terrible. Arx seems bold and innovative, which makes me wonder why they're contemplating putting big snake tits on the cover.

Fret not, though--I'd still buy the damn game even if they slapped Rush Limbaugh's hairy crack on the front.

    Such is my anticipation.

    Opinion and Suggestion

Hi I'm new here blah blah nice game when will it be released etc. ok... anyway I agree with the people saying that none of the 2 arts are right for being the box cover.

Why not something like seeing the back of a hero standing at a gate with "Arx Fatalis" on the top of it or something. You know.. really something that when you see the box you're about to 'enter' Arx Fatalis and want to know what's behind that gate. It's mysterious enough for me!! And it even gives people the urge to buy the game, I think...

    Box covers sell the game.
    INDEED!

/me babbles something about the crappy RtCW cover, how it sold so well, and how good reviews play some sort of role.

Number 2 is the better of the two especially if the title is shifted around as suggested.

Why couldn't they choose both ? with 2 different cover ? (like Black&White which had 3, and other games)

althought the first one is well drawn, it doesn't fit for Arx' cover in my opinion. It gives the impression of an old-style-game (maybe it would fit better to Eye of the Beholder 4 )
that's a pity we couldn't see it somewhere (but maybe for the back cover of the manual ? )

on the other hand this character out of the shadows, set enough mystery to invite to discover the world of Arx ; also the 2nd cover emphasize on the dark/light (so contrast between worlds) aspect of the Arx's underground environment

What do you all think of this concept?

    or

Something I whipped up using the title graphic and one of the game artworks. I think it's an interesting alternative... showing it to Arkane.

Digi, that looks better than both of them as box covers. Nice work.

Take out that glyph thing under the 'Fatalis' and I'd say Digi's was the best of the lot (just, they're all damn good). I like the style they're using also, sort of retro in a way, almost a stylish update of the box art of those RPG games that were usually advertised on the inside cover of UK Amiga magazines, like the Eye of the Beholder games and such. Great stuff, and great to see Arkane seek opinions like this.

Agreed. That style never stops holding my attention. Denis Loubet has always impressed me with his work. The Ultima series and even Autoduel had fantastic artwork. He's an original for sure.

I like DN's the most. Second image, but with the glyph.

My vote goes for the second one, although to be quite honest, I'm not that impressed with either of them. The second one will be great for the title screen though. Nice pic there Dan.

The mastodon of wit has broken out of the permafrost of humor.

I would agree with most of the comments here - the first two images would really, really suck as box art. But out of those two, the second one is the best - seems to have a bit more taste and slightly more "on target" for Arx.

Digi's stuff is great, and probably a better alternative, in my opinion. Though, the casual gamer strolling the aisle would probably get the impression that Arx is some kind of Real-Time Strategy game from that image, and that's not really what Arx is, is it?

i think that the second one would be best of all three, the one Digi did really doesn't grab my attention, if i saw it on the shelf having no idea what it was i'd probably just ignore it and not even bother to look what was on the back of the box for screenshots. The first one honestly just doesn't look like box art material to me... more like manual filler that someone meantioned already, yeah.

i'd still use something else though...

    Argh. Sorry-ass Frazetta try-hard stuff!
Craig Mullins pointed out once that Half Life capitalised on the minimal box cover thing very well (Lambda symbol, Rescue Orange colour scheme. Got that ten paces rule covered) and everyone is trying to follow it (hence one of his ludicrously detailed things didn't get used for RtcW despite being commisioned). I know the fantasy end of the spectrum marches to a different beat usually, but they should break ranks. They should come up with some picture of a nicely ornate door or doorway or something.

If I hadn't heard of Arx Fatalis before, I would probably ignore the game in a shop if I came accross one of those covers. I don't find that either of them really capture my imagination. I mean, considering that Arkane Studios have spent all of this time and money on a game which looks to be really amazing (a game that I'm more excited about than any title at the moment), it would be a shame not to invest in something better for a front cover. At the end of the day, I really want Arkane Studios to sell as many copies of Arx as they can.

That last one would catch my eye pretty quick. All my favorite games have close ups of their main characters (Thief, Planescape: Torment, Fallout). Except for King of Dragon Pass. That box had crappy art that did not do in game art justice.

Definitely sreenshot nr.2, as it represents the eery and dark atmosphere of Arx the best. (IMO it is also a great wallpaper). Screenshot nr.1 could be from *any* game. Besides, it focuses too much on the snakewoman.

But i hope the devs will choose a cover that is not "static". Give me "the promise of action", give me a sword, a dungeon environment, bloodstains and a nasty Goblin to fight!
