    T1 Trial By Night - 2002.03.22

Great FM with lots of places to explore.

    spoiler:
I've been playing for nearly 2 hours now and have visited the catherdral, dungons, Inn and the first house you come to but can't find Drannor or the lockpicks? Has anybody found these yet?

I can't help you, just adding my thumbs up for the fm. Very moody hammerite areas..cool shadow sculpting, fiendish traps, dark T1 vibe..parts remind me of cragscleft..i like it! Another cool first mission. (Anyone else seeing a pattern of high quality first attempts round here )

Well, I just thought I'd say that I was planning on posting myself about what a great first attempt this is.. Excellent architecture and variety... Better than many designer's second or 3rd attempts..heh

And I'm in the same boat as you... I'm hopelessly stuck on trying finding Drannor and am being driven slowly insane by all of the doors and chests I can't open due to the lack of lockpicks... I think just about everyone I've come across is either unconscious or very, very dead (I'm playing on normal the first time through..heh)... The map seems to be one of the most well-done maps I've ever seen in an FM, but it has me completely lost as far as finding the lampost Drannor is supposed to be standing next to is concerned...

The Argent Moron To The Rescue!

Opens the batwing doors with a "squeak!"

I tried this one late last night, and as a result, went on a bloody killing spree, thanks to blessed Tiredness. Reaction time disabled...swordfighting abilities slow...die messily. So anyway, this morning I tried again and got fairly well along.

Drannor -- rather, the meeting place -- is at the top of an inclined street. At the end of the street is an archer. To the right is the lampost. Mantle up to discover a mystery. Look around to see the clues. As a pure hint, you'll need a few crates to get up to a certain overhang close by.

As for my own problems, I'm sort of stuck as to what to do next, after fulfilling most of the goals. I'm on Normal, so I may be missing out on something. The second gate enclosing the Hammer chapel is a problem. I can lean around and frob the lever, but it doesn't do anything, as far as I can tell. I'm taking a break right now, but I'll try some more later on.

I'm having fun with this one! Lots of places to get into. It was a bit frustrating trying to get my lockpicks, but now I've got them and I'm on my way!

Heh..I was just about to post that I found Drannor's note, but I guess Silver Sorrow beat me to the punch...

    But now I'm stuck again:

    spoiler:
Where the bloody 'ell is my 2nd lockpick???!! There are gates everywhere around the locksmith area and I can't get through.. Haven't been able to get to the cathedral, either.. And most of the hard-to-get-to areas I have managed to painfully make my way into have been more or less fruitless... Sounds like Nightwalker got 'em.. Any directions on how to get to and into the locksmith's place?

    The locksmiths -
    spoiler:
From the Inn near your start point, go through the kitchen, into the pantry and out the small door at the back. Go straight across the sewer cover to the archway opposite and follow that street. When you get to a tunnel that slopes down on your right, follow it and at the bottom, go left. You'll go through a tunnel with metal floors and come out into a square. The Locksmith's is on the right. (And it's a proper pain to get into, as well.)

I've been most everywhere and I'm still bigtime short on loot. I'll have to do a very careful search later.

Has anyone mantled the lightpost meeting place without alerting that archer guard?

I'm having the same problem as Silver Sorrow with trying to get into the Cathedral or whatever it is.. Can't get the inner gate to open even though I can reach around and pull the lever... I don't really need to go there... I'm only playing on normal at the moment and only need to finish up the loot requirement, which I'm pretty sure I can easily do once I'm in there...

As far as alerting the guy by the ledge goes..I was playing pretty much commando style, but I was unsuccessful in sneaking up on him and just ended up taking him out...

Oh, and Nightwalker.. A few pieces of loot you might have overlooked:
    spoiler:
You can steal some of the paintings in the inn... There was also one of the ordinary black bottles in there that actually counted for loot... And you might want to check for guards carrying bags of loot around their belts.. There was one closed off area that was really hard to get to, and the only point I saw to getting in there was to take out the guard and grab his loot... I believe instead of taking the tunnel towards the blacksmith (by the way, thanks..I would have never found it without your help...I had actually already looted the house across the street and still had no idea that the blacksmith shop was there), you just take the other direction going down the metal ramp, and then follow that to the end where you'll reach a bridge.. The guy is patrolling behind the locked gate...

I'd Like To Thank The Academy...

I just restarted on Expert...I thought I'd try to get some perspective (I never did fulfill the loot requirement, but I'll take a closer look at the Inn this time). Unfortunately, I'll have to be careful not to massacre anyone this time around... *sigh* It sucks having morals.

I've been playing on Expert and I think I've exceeded my past best performance for "knocking AI out through doors"!! I always seem to be running from someone. You should see the corridor in the Inn by where you start. Bodies piled knee deep.

Yes, yes at last I found the lockpicks and Drannor objective. I had been up and down the drain at the back of the Inn, entered the Inn via the back entrance by the drain but never saw the allay! This FM is even more impressive then I first though only 5Mb and the city seems to go on forever! Great use of space. It reminds me of Logan's Web for some reason. Sadly, playing on hard and nearly finished now, only 500 loot required and the holy scritpure fragment to go. I believe I know where the holy scritpure fragment is but can't find the wall-lock key yet. Has anybody finished yet? Do you get to see even more of the town on expert?

I've gotten all the loot noted in the list above, I've looked everywhere I can think of and I'm still short of loot by 530 of the total available and 505 of what I need to complete Expert. That means you have to find nearly everything available to finish.

If anyone finds all the loot, will you help? I've found a couple of really well-hidden stashes, but I'm obviously still missing things.

You don't need to carry boxes to find Drannor's note, by the way.
    spoiler:
If you go down closer to the guard and look up, there is a wood piece way up high that you can rope arrow into. Than, mantle up on the ledge opposite, jump onto the rope and then onto the ledge. It's much easier than boxes.

There are several ways into the Hammer Cathedral.
    spoiler:
There is a door in the Inn with the wood bridge in front of it that leads out to the back yard. There's a stream back there and in the far end is a hole. That will get you in. You can also jump into the stream at the front outside the gate, swim around to the left, which gets you into the front yard, then rope arrow up into the balcony rail that's to the left of the front door and climb up there.

The servant AI's are pretty stupid! Notice how they go lurking around after you? Even when they're right up in your face they still lurks around? Weird people!

    Hiiden Gems

Nightwalker have you found the following teasure places,

    spoiler:
In the locksmiths upstairs (room with blazing fire) open the window shutters and climb out on window ledge then jumb across to a flat roof. At the other end is a window you can open and enter for loot. Also in Hammeraite Cathedral basement (room with priest) there is a secret switch behind the chair opening secret room behind the banner.

I'd already found those ones, though thanks for trying ouzman. I'm up to 3433 now. I found a few chests that I'd forgotten to go back and unlock. I'm still looking but getting tired.

I just finished Normal difficulty and restarted on Expert and figured out why some of us are having trouble getting into the cathedral!! You can't get into the cathedral on normal difficulty! All the ways in are locked or barred off, including the waterways...

Of course, not being able to get into the cathedral makes the loot requirement on Normal quite tricky, too... It took every last piece of loot I could find in the whole town just to make the 2000 I needed.... Well, now I'm off to give Expert another go (I didn't make it too far with the no kill objective..heh)...

Money Doesn't Buy Happiness?? Obviously They're Not Trying Hard Enough.

I'm still 152 short of the loot req on expert...I've been sifting through this thing all morning and finding out that the total loot on expert is 3825 does not reassure me at all...

A few obscure (some are *SECRET*) places to try for loot:

    spoiler:

    1. By the noble's bed (in the house by the starting point) is a chair with a ring on it.
    2. Don't forget the room with the "relics"...and a hidden stash of plates and cups under the shelf of relics. And even though Garrett says the stuff in the glass is fake, each item's worth a small amount.
    3. In an upstairs room (same place as 1 & 2), where you get the key for the doors, is a small stack of coins under the wardrobe by the bed.
    4. In the Inn is an unlit torch on the second floor hallway; frobbing it reveals a passageway and a ladder. In a niche is a chest. Behind the treasure chest is a lever. This opens up a door revealing...well, you'll see. Pretty cool. This is a favorite trick of mine: the secret-within-a-secret.
    5. In the Hammer chapel/cathedral: in the forge room, look for a valve that turns.
    6. Upstairs, before you come to the deadly staircase, is a secret room. The lever's close by. There's also another secret door in there, too!?
    7. In the house across from the Locksmith's, there's a vase behind a potted plant (second floor).

That's it from me for the moment...I'm completely brain-fried.

Anyway, no one should get the impression that I'm complaining...I've enjoyed this level thoroughly; I just think I should've been done by now.

Thank you, Silver Sorrow! There are at least two spots there that I missed:
    spoiler:
The lever behind the chest in the secret area of the Inn and the valve in the Cathedral.
I'll go and see how much that nets me!

That got me another 100g. and a whole bunch of equipment. I wish I'd found that nearer the beginning! Anymore ideas?? I'm really, really bad at finding stuff like this, so I appreciate the help. Once I've got it all, though, I'll keep a list to help everyone else, who's bad at this, like I am.

Finally finished after 5 hours on hard difficulty. I have never spent to long on one FM mind, it was fun and full of surprises!!! :thumb Is there a secret or anything in the Hammer chapel in the basement of the cathedral? It seems strange it was locked and it is certainly dark enough to hide something.

    ouzman:

    spoiler:
The chapel there has a certain item you'll need to pick up on Expert level

And I found the best secret area!! heh
    spoiler:
In the priest's bedroom down in the basement halls of the cathedral, there's a secret passage behind one of the tapestries that you can't cut (if you're just entering the room, it's the tapestry on your right).. The switch is right by it...I think on a case or something (I just found it a few hours ago and can't remember specifically...what does that say about my short term memory? Huh? What was I talking about..Oh, ya...).. Anyway, the secret room contains some gold...and a collection of nude paintings! The priest's secret porn room? hah!

Anyway, the expert loot requirement on this one is insane... It seems I'm way behind the rest of you....still 1300 short!!! 1300 to go and I'm already at the point where I'm searching the whole town for a hidden ring here, a goblet I missed there.... I don't know if I have the patience to finish this one...

Tell me about it...by the time I found that stash, there wasn't anyone left to use the fun stuff on.

I haven't had the time to check further today (I've decided that I hate painting houses, particularly my own...textured walls are the work of diabolical hands), but I'm about to take another walk through the town and see what other deviltry I can scrape up. I'm guessing all of the missing loot is nailed to a ceiling somewhere with a "Hahaha! Gotcha!" scroll right by it.

Oh...forgot to mention the Priest's secret porn room in my last post. Sorry! It's not erotic pottery or a woodcarving of mermaids, but whatever spins someone's tassels, I guess.
