Now if I can just find a previous work that the Gollum character rips off, then maybe people will stop referring to him...

    Okay, here's the real run-down.

THIS IS NOT A FULL-LENGTH BATMAN MOVIE

This is not a teaser for a new Warner Bros. movie. It's a short film put together by a couple guys to show off what they can do. It's a sort of film-resume and I imagine it's purpose is to shop it around to various studios as an example of the sort of thing they can do.

I was able to see this yesterday (it's a 45 MB .mov file) and, uh, yeah. Keep in mind Harry Knowles eats, drinks, sweats, and shits hyperbole. This does not "redefine" the genre nor is it a bold new vision of the Batman mythos, it's mostly fanboy masturbation. A spoiler synopsis, if you will:

It opens with a montage of Batman putting his costume on as news reports play over the audio announcing that the Joker has escaped from some asylum (can't remember the name). Then it cuts to Batman standing on a roof in the rain (this is the shot in the first post in this thread). Cut to a shot of the Joker running through an alley, splashing through puddles. He has a tattered asylum jumpsuit on and broken shackles around his arms and legs.

Batman does his signature "jump off the building into the alleyway" move and there's a very stylish scene where he rises from a crouch and his cape pulls up around him in a very cool, fluid motion. There's a few stylized shots of Batman persuing the Joker before he finally catches up to him. Batman and the Joker exchange a couple blows, Batman throws The Joker against the wall, then there's a rather long exchange between the two. The Joker talks about how Batman created him and therefore he won't ever kill him and blah blah old rivals this is how the game is played. Batman steps back to kick some major ass, the Joker backs up laughing his giggly little ass off and then...

ALIEN COMES OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE AND PULLS THE JOKER UP OUT OF THE ALLEYWAY ONTO THE ROOF AND BEYOND. Presumably he dies. Yes you read that right, H.R. Giger's Alien just killed the Joker. It's a truly WTF moment. Another Alien drops down into the alleyway and attacks Batman, they grapple on the ground for a minute and then...

A TRIAD OF LASER DOTS APPEAR ON THE ALIEN'S HEAD JUST BEFORE IT EXPLODES IN A SHOWER OF GOO. Yes, you read THAT right as well, a freakin' PREDATOR shows up and waxes the Alien before it kills Batman. Double-WTF. The Predator and Batman fight for a while, Batman finally kills him with his batarang and just when it seems victory is at hand he hears low laughter from behind him. He turns around... 3 more freakin' Predators standing in the alleyway. They begin closing in on him and as Batman is backing up you see more FREAKIN' ALIENS appear behind him. Now Batman's stuck between Aliens and Predators. Dead end. Fade to black.

No, I'm not kidding. That's actually how it goes. In terms of production value it's really well done but you couldn't ask for a goofier, more fanboyish, more nonsensical mixture of crossovers. Yes, I'm aware of the crossover comic books so there is a precident but it still comes off as totally retarded. By the end you expect Robocop and The Terminator to show up and start grappling each other. It's REALLY silly.

But like I said it was technically competent and the feel of the whole thing has me convinced that these guys had some money and felt like fuckin' around to see what they could pull off. However, Harry Knowles and AICN aside, this is definitely NOT some revolutionary cinematic revisioning of Batman. It's essentially a goofy exercise in fanfiction.

BTW: I still have the file on my computer, if anyone would like to provide hosting I'd be happy to send it to them. It's about 45 MB and is in Quicktime movie format. I won't be able to send it until later tonight as I'm at work right now.

It's up to you. I can e-mail it, or I can FTP it if you want to give me the server information. Whichever works better for you.

I just noticed I neglected to mention the length. It's only about 6 minutes long not counting the credits. It's Noon where I am and I won't be getting home until about 10:00 tonight as I have plans after work so unfortunately I can't send it off to Jedi until sometime after then.

I'll see if I can start the upload when I rush home to change before heading back out. Barring any catastrophes I should just be able to let it go and I'll drop Jedi an e-mail that it is on its way.

I've DLed it off Kazaa and am sharing it.

Pretty interesting, until the aliens and predators showed up. I know that there some comics where Batman fights Aliens and Predators (out-of-continuity one-shots from Dark Horse Comics), but I feel this film is actually a promotional for several upcoming movies (are they relaunching the Aliens and Predator franchises?).

They also used some music from Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (a little-known animated Batman movie that was released alongside the Burton films).

I think the directing style would work more for television.

Okay, I refused to believe the description, downloaded it, and just finished watching it.

    I don't care... I really liked it.
And now I'm gonna go dig up my Batman vs Predator comics and read them again. \o/
