ISA needs a 3rd person programmer for Thief III.

    Seen here.

Make of it what you will. But, I’d like to point out that this does not necessarily mean that Thief III will have an optional 3rd person mode. Actually, I can easily see them needing an extra hand to work on the new “body awareness” feature. Any other opinions on what this could mean?

If its what we fear it might be, let's hope its only for the X-Box version. I can't believe that Ion would do this to us following the outcry. Maybe its for a spectator mode in multiplayer or some new spying device...

    EDIT: Just spotted this

    Huge pluses:
    Experience with console game development

Hi, this is a first time post 4 me. Great forums + The circle is a great site, ive been goin on it for ages but have never signed up for the forums til now.

I dont think that t3 will be in 3rd person, but that they need someone to work on some kind of 3rd person aspect in the game, eg. scouting orbs. What do you think?

    Welcome to the forums, Demondude!

That's actually a very good point, and goes quite nicely with the suggestion in our <a href="irc://irc.starchat.com/thief">Chatroom</a> <font size=1>(<a href="http://www.starchat.net/chat/?chan=thief" target="_blank">Java Client</a>)</font> that it could also be for in-engine cutscenes.

I hope these are the reasons, and it is not for the player's viewpoint!

Note that the "experience with console game development" thing has been mentioned in all the Job Descriptions for DX2/T3 that I've ever seen. They are dual-platform games, after all.

And although it is not perhaps heartening news for Thief purists, I'm not horribly worried. I'm fairly certain of hearing Randy Smith openly deny that T3 would be a third-person game in an article (although that was a year ago at least) And much more recently Warren Spector has mentioned in several articles that he considered the First-Person-Perspective to be his preference, and the one he uses in his games - the most fluid and immersive form of presentation. There could be an optional third-person mode, perhaps, or it could be used for certain gameplay devices, or for cutscenes.

Besides, all of the footage of Thief3 we have seen has been first-person, has it not?

"Do you program in the third person?"

As a matter of fact, I DO program in the third person, and that's why I'm sending Orgy to Austin, TX to work for me. Go now son - work hard and make me some moneh!

Not surprising news. ISA has been advertising for new programming recruits ever since they took on the project.

I just hope ISA has been more prudent with their selection of writers & designers than they appear to be with their programmers.

    I'm going with this explanation:

...to work on the new “body awareness” feature.
And, if it is all about that, I'm digging the fact that they are trying to make this new feature even better. Me & Optimism!

Of course Thief 3 is going to be 3rd-person.

I'm as upset as the next person, but we did see this coming. In the T3 screens that I leaked almost a year ago you can clearly see Garrett in the foreground.

I think if we put 3 monkeys in a room with a typewriter we could get more accurate, coherent responses to this add for a programmer. The core of Thief gameplay will not be 3rd person, unless you think Randy wants to cut his own throat and put a sign on his head that says dumbest project leader in the world.

Bizarre. No matter how many times I look at the thief-kart pics, I never get tired of them. *happily envisions all the possibilities*

    These are my suggestions/hopes:

    1. Action Replay. I'd love this!

    2. Mirror views.

    3. Viewing orb with Garrett moving.

Looks like the job's been taken anyway as I can't see it there anymore.

This seems to have dissapeared from their jobs page... They must have filled it already.
    Didn't take long*

*Then again whose going to pass up a job at Ion?

    Oh that's wonderful!

    As for Fidcal's suggestions...

    1. I somehow doubt that "action replay" would give any particular benefit to anyone, but urm...

    2. Mirror views! Yes! That does sound probably, doesn't it? I mean, if Garrett is going to actually cast a real-time shadow and that you can see his body, doesn't that basically mean that there's going to have to be an actual Garrett model moving around the levels? And if there is, then reflections in mirrors, shiny floors, and helmets of guards sounds entirely probable. And of course would require a 3rd Person perspective programmer...

    3. Using the scouting orb with Garrett moving is an interesting possibility which sounds possible, but would it be worth it? Hmmm...

    Chillout everyone!

Firstly, there could be numerous reasons for using 3rd person programming, including my favourite (as mentioned by Fidcal) that there might be record-and-replay ability. If flight sims can do it then so can FPS.

However, even if ISA have been put under late pressure to allow a 3rd person view as an option, I'd hardly imagine it becoming the default setting after two full releases and several years of development, all in 1st person. In any case, if some folk get off on that play style then who are we to argue? How would a 3rd person option damage those who play only in 1st person? Thief is so inherently 1st person that any such option would just be a crowd pleaser, not a core element, IMO.

In truth, I expect it's just for in-game cutscenes. That's just the sort of thing they'd be working on during the last 6 months before release.

I kind of thought that too, then realised the possibilities of a post-mission analysis with a kind of Thief-pundit. Sorry to the non-UK folk, but I can see Alan Hanson: "Just look at that sceptre, completely undefended. No wonder the lad Garrett's been able to sneak in there and take full advantage. If I was his manager I would not be pleased at all..."

Thinking about this further I now believe that they might well be going to add a 3rd person playing mode - maybe for Xbox only. Still, we can be certain it will only be an optional extra and that first person will be available. My ideas for mirror, action replay, and viewing orb seem less likely. One other possibility is a sidekick who works with Garrett at times?
