I think Half-Life 2 was more along the lines of what it was referring to. We're having a go at that topic over in this direction.

Just a thought, kinda popped in my head.

Why are we all assuming this will be a sequel? Why not a prequel? Who wouldn't want to see what happened in the old quarter, or walk through the Lost City before it got, uhh, "lost"?

I shouldn't stay up so late...

*takes a deep breath and bellows out the second round:*

"This is the song that never ends, ...
It just goes on and on my friends, ...
Some people ... started singing it not knowing what it was
And they’ll continue singing it forever just because, ...
This is the song that never ends ..."

    [edit]
*abruptly stops singing and sits up attentively*

I TAKE IT BACK! ... I TAKE ALL OF IT BACK!!!

A prequel would be the defination of cool - but then I would be pissed having to wait for another game to find out what happens to garrett, what with T2's ending left hanging.....

here are just my thoughts. i think it will be a sequel because i have read on many sites that t3 is supposed to COMPLEATE the story. also i dont know how fun a prequel would be, considering that the very begining of thief 1, garrett started his story as a id, a teenager, and that was when he first came in touch with the keepers. i dont think they would have you play as teenage garrett. also at the end of thief 2, garrett is being nicer to the keepers, and he wants to know the rest of the prophasy, and what is going to happen in the future.

a prequel AND a sequel... together.... in one game...

start with the sequel, then spaced thru it, garrett remembering back.... hmmm. could be really good.

It could be Thief, HL2, or maybe even JK3?

    *Looks at the pics*

You do know that you shouldn't be posting scanned pictures from magazines don't you? PcGamer made a big ol stink in the last couple of days when people did that to thier pictures of Half-Life.

    *Looks at the pictures again*

Oh yeah, that and you're the greatest. I mean it, I love you man.

Thief 3 looks GREAT!! Best line from the article: "Randy Smith says the mood and vibe will match that of the original as opposed to Thief 2"

Edit: To fix my quote from the article.

Well, I was just teasing about the scanning of pictures thing. But I still have you to thank for my first look at Thief 3. So thank you again for the link! Now, please excuse me so that I may run around my house sqealing with delight.

On the downside it looks like we still have one more year before it comes out. Ah well, it wasn't like i was really expecting it this year anyways. At least I know it's shaping up to be a fantastic game.

Edit: Ah I see it was sethL who posted these first.

    Thanks for the pics!

Did you notice that the article confirms (for what its credibility is worth, knowing the accuracy of many "first look" articles) that Stephen Russell will still be voicing Garrett!

    Now that's great news!

The article goes on to say that in the overall mood Thief 3 will match Thief TDP more than "the glossy and domestic" Thief II. That's the only thing that worries me a bit. I much prefer the style of Thief II, which is based more in "reality" (using the term loosely here, in the context of Thief world), as opposed in fantasy.

I find that the missions where you go against the living are typically far more interesting than going against the creatures, because humans can be developed into interesting characters with personalities, history, dialogue and so on, as opposed to creatures which often are reduced more to the role of token adversaries.

I also love taffing around in the cities, on the rooftops, in houses, basements, towers, mansions, banks, churches, museums etc. Strange locations such as The Lost City, or the Pagan Forest (in "Trail of Blood") and so on are fun to spice things up, but I find that Thief works best when "reality" dominates over the fantastic. It's a careful balance.

We'll see how Thief III will turn out. I have very high hopes, but also feel a bit uneasy. Will it still deliver the same vibes? Will I still find myself crouching down on a ledge somewhere, high above the city streets, not doing anything but looking around and listening, enjoying the solitude and the view, really experiencing the world of Thief? I sincerely hope so.

i'm pretty sure warren is discussing mood and feeling, rather than any actual missions in that statement. i understand what he's saying. tdp/tgold has that gritty, getting thru by the sheer force of your will feeling to it. that wasn't so evident in tma. tma had a more "removed" feeling to it, maybe because of the overabundance of mechs & non-living creatures. don't get me wrong, i adore tma, but prefer tdp.

i LOVE the feeling of being up against anything alive because of the unpredictability. i consider haunts, etc to be alive, as they can "die". and according to the news, we will have that! guards who don't walk the same path over and over, who instead realize that they haven't checked the deep, dark corners (where, coincidentally, you are huddling). that is just the BEST news. besides the gorgeous modelling.

the shots also seem to have the coloring style of tdp, which i really like.

oh yeah. i'm excited. dunno if i can wait a year.

    PS:

who else LOVES the fact that you see the arrow with the fire packet and water glob on the end of it? AND the fact that your bow tilts to the side? *creams* i know i DO!!!

Amazing pics. Its great to see that they're going back to the dark, mysterious feel of the original.

B.t.w. Did anyone imagine Benny's voice would go well with the taffer on the far right in the following pic?

The images are much larger than the maximum dimensions allowed under the forum rules, and increase the size of the page to more than 1.6 megabytes (it took my 56k modem over six minutes to load this page, which is not a good thing). The images should be changed to links - embedding them in a post will only annoy people.

Edit: I see they are already replaced with links. It seems this post was a little late...

    /me drools!

Hahah! Damn it looks good, sooo good. The lightning surely has changed, but that's due to higher shadow resolution. Anyway, the same mood is still there and that's what counts! Lightning effects sure are cool, the shadows aren't just as soft as they used to be in dark engine.

Feb 2004 fits really fine for me. =D We will have enough time for finishing CoSaS. And what's most important, on that time I will have my army service completed.

Now I only would like to hear the required specs for T3 to run on at least 1024x768 resolution with 32bit colors....and mmm mm, with anti aliasing. I've got Gf4 Ti 4200 and XP 1500 already.

Btw. did anyone looked at the level design in the pics. The pics doesn't show much of it, but of what can be seen, the change is a lot bigger then what it was from T1 to T2. Anyway, I'm really looking forward in seeing the UnrealED based T3 editor and seeing what I will come up making with it....

Don't you think T3 looks bit cartoonish? Thief series has always had that cartoonish feeling, but T3 has much deeper "drawn" feeling in it. Look at the textures, like they would be drawn. Drawn over a photo...or is it only the poor paper quality in the COmputer games mag? The models are also roundish like from cartoons. Not that I wouldn't like it, the feeling is just so different to what in DX2 for instance. I claim that the feeling in the T3 might be even more immersive than in the first Thief! Weeheee!
