Melee Weapons are just the thing when you want to go hand-to-hand with your opponents. Some enemies, like the Inviso-Mutant, can inflict heavy damage with ranged attacks, but is fairly weak in hand-to-hand, so it would be your advantage to close the gap. But other creatures, on the other hand, such as the Gor-Tiger, can rip you apart at close ranges, but has no ranged attack. Taking that into account, melee weapons have one big advantage over the other weapon types: using them consumes no energy, and no ammunition. - Unkown

"I'm a security officer! Not a Plumber!"
All TriOptimum Security personnel are trained with the use of clubs, pipes and similar intruments.
The first weapon you will find is the lowly Lead pipe. The downside of a lead pipe is that it is a very clumsy weapon. It has very limited range, and you have to actually look up and down to aim it. The proper way to use a lead pipe is to sneak up behind a poor slob and bash him over the head until you see gray stuff splatter. to be fully effective, do a few berserk patches first. With a lead pipe and berserk patches, you can take out a sec-1 robot very fast. Dump it once you get the rapier. (unless you like this sort of thing)
The Lowly Lead Pipe. This is the first weapon you'll encounter and if sufficient for the earlier enemies. While it quite capable of taking care of Serv-Bots, Humanoid Mutants, and Security Cameras, it is too weak and ineffective for anything stronger. If you're put into the situation of facing an more powerful enemy and all you've got is the lead pipe, try to sneak up behind the creature in question, thwack away as quick as you can, and pray for a miracle.
The only advantage of this is that it needs no ammo. It is pretty potent against enemies on the Hospital Level *when combined with a Berserk patch*.
The first time I ever saw system Shock, we got stuck in the first room. Then we ran about with the pipe for almost an hour, hitting everything we came across..
The pipe is what you will start with. It works fine on serv-bots and mutants and it never runs out of ammo.
Your primary use for the pipe will be to put those humanoid mutants out of their misery. Use a berserk patch and come at them fast, preferably from behind. They will try to get behind you, so don't let them, just keep wacking. Not recomended for assaulting groups. Use it on serve bots and cameras as well, of course. Smashing Cyborg Drones with it is possible, but you'd have to be eather a champion fencer (you arn't) or extreamly lucky.

"An Eligant weapon, for a more, civilized age"
This energy lance projects a monofilament thread that is suspended in a contained energy field. Upon contact, the thread slices through organic and synthetic materials, permanently most creatures and robots. The rapier is usually carried only by senior officers and military commandos.
It is a VERY potent weapon. The rapier DOES use up energy. Not a lot, but enough to be annoying. A good tactic with the Rapier is to rush enemies, slicing as you go. By the time they realize youre coming, they,re no longer connected to their left sides. Berserk patches dont help here. Once you find this never EVER get rid of it. Quite possibly the best weapon in the game!!
The Laser-Rapier is the System Shock equivalent of a light sabre. Almost every enemy, with the exception of the Edward Diego Cyborg and the Cortex Reaver, will quickly fall with a couple swipes of the Laser-Rapier's sparkling blue blade. The preferred strategy to use with the Rapier is to sneak up on your enemy from the rear and slice it into sushi before it even realizes you're there. The Laser-Rapier inflicts a very high damage-point hit per strike, and coupled with an excellent armor penetration value, and a very high "recharge" rate, the Laser-Rapier would be the perfect weapon if it wasn't limited to hand-to-hand distance. Oh well... nothing is perfect. Right?
Like the manual says, this weapon is very powerful - and it works very well against all target types. Its usefulness is somewhat less at Combat Level 3, when the enemy throws out enough damage that you may not have time to close into range. At the lower combat levels, you can usually use this as your first and foremost weapon, shifting off to others for specialized situations.
Pipe Pro. This is a sinclair monomolecular thread held in an energy field. It cuts through anything. (Larry Niven fans should know this) It kills most beasts with a single swipe. Tougher monsters need two or three hits..
If you'd ever trained with a TS-04 laser rapier, then you'd know exactly what I'm talking about. Sure, they're short on range- that's why their listed in the Close Combat section of the TriOptimum Security Catalogue, genious. All I know is, armed with one of those, I'd face just about anything. Except maybe a Sec-2 'bot. I'm not crazy. You see this scar?
Your first priority when you get the laser rapier will be to clear out the invisi mutants. They seem to be impenetrable to anything else. Use a sight patch, or lamp to aid in finding them, and when you see one, move QUICKLY! Bear down on the devils as fast as possible, ducking to avoid any fire. Two or three slashes later you’ve got yourself a kill.
Other then that, your tactics are simple, peek around the corner until your foe’s back is to you, and then rush them! Sliceing them between the shoulder blades. If the enemy is stationary, try to sneak around behind them. If that’s not possible, then you’d be better off just sniping them. Never use your rapier in large battles with multiple foes, unless you have major shielding. This is a one-on-one weapon. |
