External Camera??!?
- 4:11pm EST - the spy
Something occured to me while looking at "Time for a swim". That 3D object in the corner.. it looks like a camera. Notice that there are no other interface graphics, save the gem in the center (which I now know to be a darkness indicator). Look at that man, he's dressed in all black, tall and skinny.. sort of like.. A Thief. But not just any thief.... take a look at these two images of Garret.
[garret.jpg 677K]
[garret2.jpg 669K]
Now look at this picture of them next to eachother.
[thieves.jpg 147K] (I raised the gamma to bring out detail)
The outfit looks very simmilar, dosn't it... Could this be an external camera? I'm going to check with Doug Church to be sure....

Four New Screenshots
- 12:30pm EST - the spy
Ah good! more screenshots from the LGlass Thief Site.
I think I'm going to be sick
Are we playing Thief or Descent here? Ok, now this is weird.. are we looking up, or down a corridor?
No time to admire the art
A sword... versus a Blackjack... umm.. RUN. Note the existence of healing potions....
In the mines
Kinda reminds me of the mine in Die By the Sword. Will be be able to ride the cart, just like Enric did? Unfortunately, both carts look de-railed. Why is it so light in there?
Time for a swim
WOW.. this is a cool shot.. the first thing i noticed was the cool man in Black.. is that a new breed of baddie, or an NPC... 2nd was that strange unlabeled 3d object in your display.. what IS that? And, of course, there's the fact that this screenshot is indeed 800x600, rather then 640x480, like all of the others.

Thief Diary Updated
- 12:30am EST - the spy
Looks like the Thief Diary was updated back on the 14th, and I never bothered to notice... Here it is, for your convenience...
Well, the network just crashed on us here at LG, so clearly God is telling me to write a diary entry, by keeping me from doing anything else.
We finished up the training mission, and got our first "real" mission into Beta test on Tuesday, and feedback from playtest has been good. A couple more should be wrapping up in the next few days, and we're scheduled to be done with all missions and formally in Beta early next month. Everyone's working heroically at making that happen, so feel free to give us cookies, pep-talks, or rubdowns if you're in the neighborhood.
Kate, Mark, and I are getting the last of the creature meshes in the game this week. Tom, Chris, Doug, and I have been collaborating on tuning combat and AI properties. In particular, Chris has now got it so that AI's can lead you pretty well in hand-to-hand combat, so if you try to dash past a guard in a hallway you'll get a sword in the ribs on the way past.
Mahk has a basic metagame UI in, so you can go from mission to mission without going through the level editor, spend your loot on mission loadout, check your map and your progress on mission objectives, and such. We've got the code in for combat to leave blood stains on the floor which AI's coming by later can notice (unless you sneak up and "sap" your foe with your blackjack, or use your water arrows to wash the blood away).
As a side note, I just gotta say you must love a job where your "to do" list includes "script coughing up blood." - Tim
Coughing up blood? is he serious?

New Screenshots
- 3:00pm EST - the spy
Finnaly, a real update. The LGlass Thief Site one again has two new Screenshots;
The Bafford entrance is well guarded
One thing's for sure, you arn't going in that way. Those guards seem really tired. Why is one lamp-post out? What is that wierd stuff on the bottom of our display?
What has eight legs...
Ahh.. reminicent of crawling through the caverns of Underworld, hunting for spiders and other creepy-crawlies. I am slightly disturbed by how the spider's legs pass right through the wall... What is that object eminating light? Are those spiders poisonous? How will poison work? Hmmmm.....

I finnaly managed to bag my long searched for Thief Trailer. So stop reading and head on over and download it. It's a hefty 23 megs, but worth it...

Musicology
- 12:20pm EST - the spy
LGS's games have all had great music, and Thief will be no exception. Here are some words about the music in Thief....
Q: I would really love to hear some facts about the music in Thief. I very much liked the music in Underworlds and, as a classical oriented amateur musician and composer, I am also professionally intrested in this field. I'm sure the music engine won't cause me any major disappointments, but what will the music itself be like? I have seen one of your trailers, and it had, I'm sorry to say, e. guitars and a bit teknoish sounds. In some other environment it would had been ok, but in such a middle-age and fantasy oriented game as Thief it was a bit out of place. So, some questions to the musician(s): How would you define the style of music in Thief? I would also like to know what are your personal favourites in the classical field (composers, works). How about the movie composers? Will the music be in general midi -format or will it come straight form CD? And finaly, what software do you use (sequencers etc). I'm eagerly waiting for Your answer. Thank you.
-Ville Komppa
p.s. I couldn't help noticing a minute ago surfing in the Thief homepage, that The Band in fact doesn't HAVE a musician. So who will it be... You know, it's a poor band that ain't got players. Do you perhaps use a free-lancer..? (Here would be one very much interested ;-)
A: You might want to take another look, because the band has a GREAT musician named Eric Brosius. (He also did the music for Terra Nova, so if you liked that game's music [i did] you should be happy. -the spy) Thief is NOT a straight fantasy game but a game where aspects of the medieval world are sometimes uncomfortably melded with those of the industrial age; our goal is not to rehash fantasy cliches, but rather to create an eerily unfamiliar setting. Most of the game will have moody atmospheric music although it will also incorporate a more techno/industrial sound at certain points. -Daniel and Jenn

Of Avis and Previews
- 6:10pm EST - the spy
James Sterrett, has been so kind as to provide me with an avi version of the latest Thief trailer, already available of this site. Like the movie addid this morning, it is of higher quality then the quicktime files provided by the LGlass Thief sIte. As before, the file is available at my downloads page, the Thief page in ShockData, or the link below..
Download the Thief Trailer Avi Now!
There is, however one Thief Trailer that I don't have... The first one released. It did not show any gameplay, or have any text or voiceovers. Just cutscene clips, and music. It showed a lock geting picked; a shadowy figure creeping behind a guard, with a closeup of his face; A group of guards with swords drawn. If anyone has, or knows where i can get this, please contact me
In other news, there is a new Thief preview at ogr.com. Head on over and take a look.

New Thief Avi
- 1:45am EST - the spy
One of my contacts, James Sterrett, has provided me with this fantastic Thief trailer. As far as I know, this avi has never been available online. It is very high quality, making it a large file, at around 12 megs zipped. It is also rather old, for it shows the game title to be "The Dark Project" rather then Thief. You can go to my downloads page, the Thief page in ShockData, or get it right here, right now....

New Thief Screenshots
- 8:40pm EST - the spy
The LGlass Thief Site has two new Screenshots;
Attack the crayman
Ok, what is that thing? and what is that white puffy stuff?
Don't miss again!
Neat action shot, but I'm curious... why is it that we are usually seeing combat scenes, when this game is about stealth and cunning?

Rockin' New Thief Site
- 8:30pm EST - the spy

Rearrangements
- 12:00am EST - the spy
The first thing you will notice, is that the news has been archived. This will be done every 2 weeks, or by the week, depending on how much activity we see. The info section has been divided into 3 parts: Company Line, where you can read the official write-up of the story and features; Exclusive info, where I have posted up any exclusive information I have found, which will always appear as a news post; and lastly, the news archive, of which you all should be familiar.
We also have a link to a new Thief article on the press page, it's at Adrenaline Vault once again, an interview with Greg LoPiccolo.
