Using the Flesh Renderer

The Flesh renderer is activated by clicking the ION button above the 3D viewport. This changes the 3D viewport to use the same Flesh renderer that is used in game, giving a very accurate preview of the level. The Flesh renderer offers a number of submodes that display various useful types of information.

Based on some tests, the Flesh renderer appears more stable when used with ATI cards than the normal renderer, so it may be a good choice for ATI users.

  • Fullbright mode. The lightbulb with 100 underneath it activates Flesh fullbright mode, which gives a view very similar to the standard Unreal renderer. This mode is useful for aligning meshes or brushes without having to place lights to illuminate them.
  • Flesh overlit geometry. This mode highlights surfaces based on the level of light falling on them, from green (indicating no or very little light) to red (indicating a lot of light). This mode allows you to modify lighting while receiving instant feedback on where the light is falling, and whether particular areas of the level need more or less light.
  • Lights that touch too many objects. This mode appears to make lights go red if there are lots of objects in their radius, and green otherwise. Presumably it is a performance diagnostic tool that allows you to avoid having too many shadows.
  • Flesh wireframe. This mode draws all surfaces as wireframe, and shows BSP cuts and divisions. It can be useful for diagnosing the source of problems with BSP.
