I am getting together a select group of people to form a Thief editing guild. Anyone interested in applying should email me at starfighter@starfighter.net, or better yet, by ICQ. (19859277)

Of course, we will not be making any money from it. All work is on a volunteer basis.

    Looking for:
  • Skin editors
  • Sound editors
  • Assistant Webmaster
  • Beta testers
  • Anyone who thinks they can contribute!

I've already begun work on a web page, it will be at http://www.starfighter.net/thief. As of the time this message was posted, you would get a File Not Found error, but I'll have the page up in a couple of hours.

Our first project will probably be a Star Wars total conversion, using the Dark Engine.

That of course would depend on what you think it means.

I think I may be sending the wrong message here. I think Thief is a fantastic game, not only visually, but it also has a great story element to it.

Like the conversions made for Jedi Knight, Starcraft, and dozens of other games, my project is not meant to in any way infringe on any copyrights, or make money off of someone else's work. It's purely for the enjoyment of other gamers.

Note: The page is up! I'll be working on the other sections tonight, but the main page is here

Well, I would be interested in creating new maps, but not conversions. I don't think I'd even want to play a conversion.

So what you're saying is that you don't ever want to play another game with the Dark Engine? Don't you like it?

Revise the engine to make other games, not just use Thief to change things. You can't make anything close to system Shock 2 by making a Thief conversion.

What I was picturing would be in the same vein as TDP. Not another Doom clone, but a first person game that would challenge your brain as well as your mouse-finger.

Picture it, a lone Rebel spy penetrating some hidden imperial stronghold. Outnumbered and outgunned, but never outwitted.

There are hundreds of possibilities.

Oh, I have such a game (rummaging) there it is. It's called... lets see... ah: Dark Forces. Oh yes. Those were the days. (Ahem.)

Can you lean around corners in Dark Forces? Do the stormtroopers have conversations with each other in Dark Forces? Can you hide in the dark in Dark Forces? Does the enemy taunt you in Dark forces?

Yeah, didn't think so.

That's software evolution for you. Features evolve over time.
I could not resist that remark after you were talking about Rebels and Imperials...

So do you happen to have a mission editor for Thief?

No, I don't have a mission editor, (Give us the goods, DN!) but if you change out the wall textures, sounds, skins, weapons, etc., it could make ol' Baffords look like the Death Star or anything else you can think of.

Ok guys, the smiley faces are annoying. If you don't have anything to say, don't say it.

The subject of this thread just puts a big smile on everyone's face. It takes guts to announce an editing guild for a game that has no editor.

Keep smiling!

Thief does have an editor, it's called WinZip. You can open, edit, import, and extract files from the TDP archives using WinZip.

All of the files in these archives are of a type that can be edited by almost anyone. The sounds are in .wav format, the skins are .gif's, and many of the other images are .pcx'x, which can be edited with most popular image editors.

An editor would make the process much easier, but with a little patience, you can change anything in the game.

We all know about the WinZip hack, but changing sounds and textures does not an editor make, nor does it qualify as level editing. When there is an actual way to build maps, then I think you will get some takers. Plus I don't think the Thief (AKA Dark) engine will lend itself to a Star Wars game, but maybe someone else will go for that.

You've got the right idea though...putting together an editing scene before the editor so Lglass knows there's a demand for it (although, unless they're deaf, I think they know already). There are a whole lot of us who would love to see maps/mods that capture and expand upon the atmosphere of the original Thief.

After all, we love Thief because it's... well.. it's Thief! Not some other game, but Thief, with Thiefy atmosphere, Thiefy guards, Thiefy burricks, well, you get the idea. (Umm.. EDITOR? hack cough EDITOR?! RELEASE PLEASE! RELEASE THE EDITOR!) sorry 'bout that... Anyway, I think the ultimate mod will be called Thief 2. :-P

And, some more gratuitous smileys to avoid any accusations of me being derogatory, consdescending, rude, snotty, boorish, etc (and that's just what my friends say about me):

Hey, sign me up. I've got an editor. But then, I work here.

Yes, I did that just to torment you all.

<- These guys are also here to torment you.
