I was reading through the config files in the saves directory and
found this at the bottom of the file cfg0001.bnd:
;Look for the Garrett action figure as seen in the game
you can find him...coming to a store near you

I found the basketball court after reading posts in this forum,
but I haven't found any information on the Garrett action figure.
Anyone know where it is?

You wouldn't recognize it if you saw it. The "Garrett Action Figure"
is QA slang for the model which represents Garrett in external
camera mode. Note that this is not a way to play
Thief as a third-person game. It's a debugging feature,
which may or may not actually be in the shipping game (I really
If anyone can manage to detach your camera from Garrett and check
out the "Garrett Action Figure," sing out.

Just an idea... The black dressed assassins at Ramirez?

Yeah the assasins do look like garrett from the cut-scenes. The
assasin would be a logical choice for the Garrett model. You
probably wouldn't need all those assasin animations though.

OK, EvilSpirit, damned if I can resist a challenge like that. I say
that the action figure must still be in the game, or the QA
team probably wouldn't have told us to look for it. (After all, the
basketball court is in the game.) Let the Garrett Action Figure Hunt
After about half an hour of futzing around, I haven't
found the action figure so far, but I have been able to
figure out how to use the in-game command-line console (yes, there
is one, believe it or not, and it works!).
Right now I'm working
on compiling a complete list of console commands. It's pretty
tedious trial-and-error work, but the "detach camera" command has
got to be in there somewhere!
EvilSpirit, care to give me any

One _little_ question, how do you get the console?
There are Garret skins.

OK, I had a feeling someone would ask. =) To get the in-game
"console", you have to issue the command edit_command. How do
you issue that command, you ask? Simple: You bind it to a keystroke.
For example, on my system, I bound edit_command to the
TILDE (~) character, a.k.a. SHIFT+BACKQUOTE (`). (I would have used
BACKQUOTE itself, but I'm already used to having that bound to the
clear_weapon command in Thief.)
Anyway, what you need to do is edit the appropriate .bnd
file (dark.bnd, user.bnd, or whichever one you happen
do be using) as follows:
Search for the following line:
bind ~ clear_weaponand replace it with the following
bind ~ edit_commandFrom now on, you should now be able to
enter in-game commands by pressing the TILDE (~) key.
Many of the movement commands will work (jump,
crouch, etc.), as well as "system" commands
(dark_version, objectives, win_mission, etc.).
One particularly useful command is dump_cmds, which dumps a
list of many useful commands to a file that you specify:
dump_cmds filenameNote that many of the commands
appear to have been "neutered" in the shipping version of the game.
Note also that the game does not give you any feedback to tell you
if a command is invalid or not supported.
One command that seemed to hold promise to find the elusive
Garrett Action Figure was user_camera_offset; however, it
seems to be one of the commands that was neutered before release.
(EvilSpirit, am I getting warm?)

i didn't get far fooling with that stuff, but i know next to nothing
about that kind of thing either..gee, it's almost like an editor
Altho im a little skeptical about the "select_gun" command LOL
somehow i don't think they had thief in mind on all of these
commands unless thats just for arrows and stuff =]
| posted February 27, 1999 05:22 PM
Yeah, I'm pretty sure select_gun is for arrows -- not that it
actually seems to do anything. The flash command, which would
have been a pretty useful cheat, doesn't seem to do anything either.
Have you tried metagame. Looks like a quick mission
selection screen used for debugging. They left it in the final game,
but disabled all of the buttons except for "quit".

I've been documenting the console commands from the demo version
hoping someone would find it in the full game. Did you just check
the binding for ctrl-p in the demo spire? Pretty clever. (wish I'd thought of that.)
| posted March 13, 1999 08:59 AM
The first demo has a LARGE number of bindings in various files. Many
are specifically for an editor which at SOME point was accessed
through the game. Of course most of these bindings don't work with
any publicly available version of the game.
Also, if you look in the dark.cfg file, the default for the
player_model is playbox. The playbox.bin references face.gif as the
'skin'. Both the .bin and .gif files are in the obj.crf. The image
in face.gif appears in the credits.avi a little over half way
through it. Is this what they were talking about?

How were you able to tell what file it refers to?
Can you find a .bin that refers to the garrett pics?

! How were you able to tell what file it refers to?
If you open the .bin file in a hex editor, you'll see the
filename of the gif. You can also use Notepad, but it's harder to

There are three in the mesh.crf, all with expgar*.bin as a common
The expgar*.bin files are referenced in miss5.mis and dark.gam.
Miss5.mis only references expgarb.bin and dark.gam only references
expgarsw.bin. It could be that there is or was an external camera
mode using expgarsw.bin as the model, but I haven't been able to

Since everyone is mucking about with the .CRF files here I figured
I noticed the right hand trophy in Ramirez' Mansion. Then I
noticed the more-or-less complete texture under Mesh.crf/full.gif
Granting that it is probably from one of the levels that was
removed, anyone know what the thing is supposed to be?

I, for one, am extremely impressed that you put all of that
The console command to detach the camera from the player's eyes
is "player_cam_control 1", but we don't think its supported in the
shipping game. I suppose you can go ahead and confirm that.
Good work, Sherlock.

Sorry to report that it didn't work for me. Perhaps someone who has the
original demo could try it.
NaeS: Now can you figure out how to get that command back in?

good work, NaeS. i too am impressed.
Catalyst - have you typed up
that list yet?
just so anyone else who's playing w/ the console knows (i just
started like 5 minutes ago... it's fun, even tho it gives me an odd
flicker), if you hit tab, it will (assuming you have a valid prefix)
finish what you're typing for ya. off to play some more...
i dunno about _all_ cat (maybe, not sure) but it goes thru a lot.
what i find strange is that the commands (good or bad) that you type
in are accessible thru tabbing, too. maybe that's what that
cmd_history or whatever is used for...

yeah, I did.
and you don't need a prefix at all, tab will cycle through all
the commands if you don't first type in a character.
