If you leave the CD in the CD drive for about a week without gameplay action it will delete every saved game so you have to start all the way from Lord Bafford. Or atleasest that what happened to me. Dont let it happen to you either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's what you get for not playing.

Just kidding. I doubt the problem is what you think.

My guess is, that someone started auto-play and reinstalled the game. I wish I had known about it's "erase all there is" tendancy, otherwise I'd have made a spare copy of DromEd and the level I was working on. :/

What the heck are you talking about erasing everything? My Autoplay is off and has been off for about 2 years now... cuz Winduhz is too stupid to handle autoplays correctly all the time.

DN: Is it possible to rig an IQ test to the forum registration process in order to weed out some of these newbies?

It used to be such a treat to traipse through the Thief discussion groups; the writers were witty, prose florid, humor unsurpassed.

Sigh.

Freedom of speech is highly overrated.

Mr. T, you are being much too mean. I pity the fool who's not nice to the newbies.

If nothing else, Manflesh has a cool name.

You know what? I just imagine...

... how the CD, realizing that it is still in the CD-ROM drive after some weeks without playing the game, stretches some thin, but long... well, somehow woodsie, arms out. Arm with claws. It stretches its arm to your HD, and digs the claws into the HD, exactly finding the savefiles of Thief, and exactly avoiding every other file. It eliminates the savefiles, giggles, because now the lazy gamer is punished enough (some people seem to think that it is horrible to be forced to replay the game, after they installed the patch, so it might be a punishment). Still giggling, the CD pulls the woosie arm back in, and looks pretty normal, again.

I have heard it as a general rule to never leave cds in their drives, VHS tapes in the vcr, or Casettes in their players. I have always ignored such warnings despite the rages of my girlfriend. I think that Thief was in my drive for about two months before it came back out for the first time. Poor thing must have been blinded. I never lost data because of that, though. I have lost it for dumb mistakes, formatting, dropping, and just about every other stupid thing I could do to it. Anyway, this is just a long way of saying, Thanks for watching out for us. It was good advice.

Thanks Lytha. I needed that.

Ich kann ein Bit eilig gesprochen haben, aber ich bin von diesen Idioten und von ihren lächerlichen Meldungen müde gewachsen. Es ist kein Wunder, daß das ganzes Forum einen langsamen Tod gestorben hat.

Mr T., there are more people in here who understand what you wrote, and both languages are very similar, so that most probably even more will understand your comment. Just a warning - nur weil das hier vor allem US-Amerikaner sind, bedeutet das noch lange nicht, daß sie kein Deutsch verstehen.

How does it come that you know that I understand that weird language, anyway?

Lytha checks her profile, sees that the location is still not available there, sighs in relief, and wonders why Mr T. knew that she understands german.

(you have probably no idea how annoying it can be, if some people think that words such as "fatherland" can bug a person away who does not like her own nation.)

It might be because of the '.de'-Domain.

If you don't like (y)our country, do as I do and emigrate ...

Oh and Mr T:

Lytha is absolutely right that there are more people who understand German.

Actually I just went to Altavista's translation program and translated the sentence back to English. It was a perfect translation (I can speak German so I know) except for one little grammatical mistake.

Lytha: I recall reading your comments about the German version of Thief and surmised you were still living in that country.

I also used the AltaVista translation service to compose my latest ode to the newbies. Unfortunately, my father never taught me how to speak the language of his country. He's from Salzgitter.

And chalk up my comments to a bad day. Normally I bite my tongue but couldn't resist the urge to skewer a fresh newbie.

Please accept my humblest apologies.

Skewer me? In other words you were trying to insult and hurt my feelings? Mission Failed. Anyway I have been playing thief for a considerable time it is just that I recently signed up to this excellent page since I got the internet a week ago. I cant understand your thinking that says all new members know nothing and are a lower life form. I can only hope that you will mature into a better, nicer person like most of the other people in the forum. Good luck to your hopeful growing kindness

I knew Lytha was German by her voice in GatB. Well, actually I knew before that... I can't recall how I knew. Love that accent, BTW. What's so bad about Germany? I've never really hears anything bad about it, at least not that I recall.

OK. Instead of skewer, how about saying I just basted your manflesh with some barbecue sauce and be done with it?

I'd love to continue this discussion but I've been having trouble using my PC lately.

Ahh! I see the problem! My Thief CD was in my CD-ROM drive. All better now.

Hehe that's right about GatB. I noticed that too.

I didn't read the credits and so I didn't know Lytha's voice would be in there. When I heard it I *knew* it was her

Well, anyway there is no reason not to like Germany. I for one am just no patriot (which means that I don't love this country better than others).

There are lots of reasons not to like Germany. Just study the history of the 20th century; and also some things in the present.

Hey, the Green Party (and others) in Germany has at least some say in Government; a two-party system here is inherent in our electoral procedure. As I understand it, Germans vote for a party, rather than individual representatives. Based on the share of votes received, each party is alloted x number of seats. Seems to work better, to an extent, than what we have.. 500 Republocrats.

Herr T, warum bist du so langwelig? Dass nicht-so-spitzfindige Flamme war ganz kalt. Du kannst besser tun!

Altavista translates spitzfindig as quibbling? That's not quite the meaning I intended.

Mr.T. Please explain to me why you must instigate such a unjustified attack. You better stop and think before you do something so stupid. Think about this, if I wasnt a new member would you still be unkind to me?? No, and I bet that if we knew each other outside of the computer, you would like me. As I said before I hope your sorry unkind a** matures.

Aw, there ain't much wrong with Germany! I have a nice, long lineage from there.

I even spoke the language once, but you know the saying -- If you don't take it out and use it, it's going to rust. Very true, especially with languages.

And Lytha, I wouldn't hold that Hitler fella against Germany (IF that's what you're referring to) -- I mean, I'd hate it if people judged the United States by Bill Clinton.

Well IMHO it's a little far-fetched to compare Hitler to Bill Clinton. But still I can only second what BoneChill said.

There cannot be a reason not to like Germany. A country is not responsible for the actions of its people - but the people themselves are. Blame our ancestors for WW2 and the holocaust. Blame them for the fact that they didn't stop it while there was a chance.
But don't blame the country.

Lytha, I know that your opinion is not uncommon. And this is quite sad ... cause this way the only ones who actually seem to have some esteem for this nation are drunk soccer fans and lame-brained neo-nazi kids.

Manflesh, what are you talking about? If someone says he'll skewer you like a shish-kabob you must answer 'First you should stop waving it like a featherduster.' Failing that, you've lost. Or perhaps I just don't recognize good humour when I see it.

I agree, Ymochel. Yeah, there are some bad things in Germany's past, the there are bad things in every country's past. In the US: Slavery, gross mistreatment of native Americans, the American Civil war (some might argue), involvement in the Vietnam war (again, some would disagree), the only use of the A-bomb against human targets, and to top it off, Hansen! (NOOOOOO!!)

Wait, are Hansen Americans? Oh well.

Virulent anti-semitism existed in practically every European country, including France (Dreyfus affair.) Although pogroms took place in other nations (especially Russia, 1906), only in efficent Germany did it reach genocidal proportions.

No country has avoided this affliction. The U.K. has the dubious honor of being the birthplace of the "Skinhead" movement The U.S. has the KKK "sheetheads."

Actually, I count Germany as one of the better European countries. It has a very rich culture, and the food's to die for.

Of course, every country has things going for it, even France.
