Those crf files in the Thief dir can be opened with Winzip. All the textures and sounds + other stuff are in them. Thinking about doing some new skins for the models.... Why doesn't someone write their own level editor? The person that did would be heralded as a savior and aquire a flock of admirers im sure...

And while your messing around with crf files,
make sure to check out books.crf/Quotes.str
its some funny comments left in by the programmers

Those quotes are actually in the game. Look for the basketball court easter egg in the Expert level training mission.

editor.crf... hmmm, looks like it contains a cursor, don't recognize it from the game... why include pieces of the editor, without the exe?
Or mebbe this cursor appears at some point later in the game, haven't gotten that far yet *shrug*

thats the cursor you see on the load/save/options/quit screen. there is no cursor in the game itself

Nupe, not so... the one shown in the menus is an arrow, while the one in the editor.crf is a cross-hair. The menu arrow is found in interface.crf

LOL... ok, i'm not trying to start any nasty rumors or anything, but wouldn't it be kewl if the editor were packaged w/ the engine, and you only need one more line of text in dark.cfg to make it usable? come to think of it, NetStorm was like that...
ah well. no, this isn't from the camel's mouth - it's just a loony theory.

-redEye

ps - actually, the crosshair is from later in the game, when Garrett picks up a high powered rifle. HTH

ROFL... now there's an idea... one little BFG or Rocket Launcher and I could take out the entire guard staff *sigh*
Anywho, I had similiar supsisions... considered opening up my hex editor and taking a peak at the game exe. Any of you hackers care to? Mebbe we'd find something . If not, I betcha they included all the files required for the editor 'cept the exe, for ease of distribution later *hope*... or they were too damn lazy to figure out which files belonged to which exe

Ok now i recognize most things in the crf files but one gif i didnt...take a look at full.gif in mesh.crf...what the hell is that?, looks like a sea creature or something, maybe im looking at it wrong...and holy shit i just looked at monkeyg.gif in mesh.crf and god damn i would have pissed my panties if i saw that in the game...maybe i should make a list of the things that i dont recognize...all in mesh.crf (im choosing items at random)

Monkeyg.gif
Monkey.gif
Full.gif
water.gif
apparit.gif <~~???
keep.gif
ogar.gif

Damn, id love to see thoughs in thief...i truely wish that they will be in the expansion pack, if there is one. I may even post a new topic just to get EvilSpirit to tell me why and what these are.

hrmm... interesting.
it seems that there's pictures of Garrett in there, too, in the same manner as the guards and stuff - garetbow.gif and garett2.gif

there's also a skin called "hamnov2.gif" - presumably a Hammerite novice. refresh my memory - do we see any Hammerite novices in any levels (Undercover)?
KMser.gif is some female skin, but she doesn't look very peasant-like (compare with mwomanb3).
from meshbld.log: "add_pgon: I only like triangles and rects!"
man, this is a lot more fun than French homework!
OMG those monkeys are scary.
oger2 looks like it's in a slightly different form than most of the other skins. either that, or it's got a face on both sides of its head...
interesting that water.gif is another male skin.
and wraith and wraith2 are just interesting...
whoa. it's pretty clear that the artists put a lot of work into the zombie... he looks really kewl close up.

in the next issue, we start hacking the .bins! ;-)

-redEye

ach, one more thing: in intrface.crf, check out demoff.pcx. i haven't played the demo - does this come up in it at all? i don't recognize it...
man, i keep editing this post and just cutting out the lil' "this post was edited by redEye message"...
in interface.crf, there's map.pcx. now i'm sure i've seen this somewhere, but i can't place it. any help?
it brings up something i hadn't thought about before, though. if LGS releases an editor, there will have to be some way to play new maps, right? Quake and Doom had similar interfaces - command line or console - but back w/ Wolfenstein, you actually needed to edit pre-existing maps and then replace the _entire_ map set with the edited ones (often including many standard maps). wasn't a big deal back then, cuz the map files were small. hrmm...

Hrm... from the Garet skins, I assume they originally intended a multiplay, or at least external cam view (fat lot of good that'd do you, though, considering how visable you are most of the time in the shadows ). As for the rest, baddies that didn't make it into the game... or extras in there for possible expansions. Assuming they release a map editor, there would be a set of new insta-monsters already created that they could give out...
I hope I never see an apparit.gif in-game, though... *shudder*... and I assumed the monkey graphics were what the apemen looked like?

Well, Rape, keep.gif is a keeper from the training mission, monkey and monkeyg are constantine's ratmen/apemen, FYI.

And we see a hammerite novice in Cragscleft talking to the priest.. before you blackjack them both

I belive that Kser IS the servant, and any women you find out in the streets (trailing ramires's thugs). I seem to remeber women in gray in Bafford's place & Ramirez's. The other one, serv2 or something is actually the whore in prison...

Although, I could be wrong

Hey, I started peekin in there and boy, there's some nutty stuff. Hey, anyone tried switchin gif's??? I took a pic of my dorm's RA and stuck his face on a hammer guard. Everyone got a kick out of that.

I remember that 2 headed ogre from one of the very first screenshots... and that large serpent-like critter from a conception sketch...

heehee... kewl, snoman.
yeah, at the very least, we could make different skins for Thief if we got that bored... could add new sounds and text, too. alright, who wants to stalk Snoman around in Assassins and beat the snot outta Ghost on RTC?
still, this kinda stuff is more icing than real cake...
oh yeah, DN? kewl that you remember that. guess it's just stuff that never made it to the final cut... tho it would be easy to change ogre2 to one of the guard skins or something. i'm still curious about the crosshair and map.pcx, though.

It wouldn't be so simple for the Ogre skin..

he has two heads

the 3DO they used.. had 2 heads... and looked about 7 feet tall.

yeah, but ghost - your name is just so much more appropriate, don't you think? the haunts (skull-dudes) and that Builder-forsaken brother murus are ghosts... so we already have pent-up hate towards you

DN - yeah, i just wanted to see what it'd look like. be kinda freaky, sneaking up behind someone and having him "looking" right at you...
mmmm... 7 feet tall. gotta jump to BJ him, eh?

-redEye

Oh, DN - do you still have these early screenshots?

Hey I'll bite--Lemme just get snoman's picture and I'll do the rest. Hey! Anyone else want their mugs on various guards and monsters to kick around? I'll mess with sounds and everything! Better yet just give me any picture and what creature you want it on. Okay Who's In? I probably couldn't do most of it until the weekend though. More icing than cake, yes. Waste of time, probably. Will it work? I dunno. But LET'S GO FOR IT ANYWAY!

Sure, I'll give it the 'ol college try, doesn't seem to be much interest in it though. Anyone know how I can start up an ftp server?

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but does anyone know what became of Mission 8? The miss*.osm files and the miss*.dif files seem to jump from 7 to 9.

Also, the *.str files (from books.crf) make a similiar jump. Reading the *.str files, it is apparent that level 7 is "Haunted Cathedral" and level 9 is "Lost City." Was there originally supposed to be a level between these? Or, perhaps the programmers just had some sort of counting impairment?

One other thing: anyone else notice example.str? It is a template for the pages of a book. And, it seems to be written for the players, not the programmers. If the editor isn't built in, it looks like maybe it was supposed to be.

oooooooohh, the intrigue!

(you know, somebody mentioned earlier that *someone* at LGS should let the editor slip out under a different handle....I don't see what would be so wrong if a Thief editor just *showed up* on some ftp server somewhere....)

If Eidos is the problem I already have a vague map worked out of their offices. I could have their unconscious president delivered to you by midmorning tomorrow, I'm sure he'd be willing to reach an agreement...

Ok, maybe that was a little extreme, can't you see how bad we want it?!

i think the thing with mission 8 missing is because they made the training mission 1 and decided to straighten out the numbers at 9...why they didn't do it sooner i don't know.

but maybe there is a lost level...HMMMMMMM!

But Ghost, if they were to straighten out the numbers, wouldn't they go the OTHER way? I mean, mission 0 (training) becomes mission 1, and mission 1 becomes mission 2. So, wouldn't they drop it back instead of jumping ahead? Of course, they couldn't drop it back... but why move it ahead? It just makes the problem worse. Mission 12 is now Mission 14!

Hey, have you guys noticed that there are a LOT more sounds for garret than actually used.. including what seems a commentary for learning everything about Thieving. He tells you the uses of the arrows, to be careful of blind corners, to listen before a door... interesting stuff

There is a lost level!!! And it's Sweet!! There's fake walls, dogs that bite you, and a boss bad guy with chainguns instead of arms that says 'Gutentaag!' when you open the door!! Just go into lost_level.cfg and delete all the "REM"s and semicolons, and viola! There's even a cut scene where an older Garret tries to pick-pocket a clown, and then joins a mystical traveling Circus!! The level is called "Carnies: The Dumb Project"

don't ask me to explain the logic of rattled programmers who tend to work in dark areas and record some of the really wierd comments they had in working on it (see thief/books/quotes.str) or "use" the bedroll in the basketball room in expert training.

I just post here =PP it was just a thought =]
