Thread: Jet-packs!

  1. #1

    Jet-packs!

Terra Nova rocks for lots of reasons, but the jet-pack is a big one, and I want to get a list of 3D games with the feature (because AFAIK it doesn't crop up that often, despite the invariably-awesome results).

I also want to categorise them to some extent. My suggestions are:

'game name' (linked to mobygames if possible, or moddb for mods, etc...)
    '1stP' for first-person.
    '3rdP' for third-person.
    'MP' for multi-player.
'MP+B' if there are bots for multi-player.
    'SP' for single-player (beyond MP+B).
'1' if jet-packs are a primary/fundamental aspect of the game.
'2' if jet-packs are a secondary/occasional aspect of the game.
'3' if jet-packs only feature rarely.

That's a bit subjective, but for example I would say '1' for Giants, as jet-packs are fundamental for the Mecc third of the game (even though they don't feature for the other characters); I would say '2' for Armed and Dangerous as (a) it's not a 'proper' jet-pack, and (b) you don't always have it; and I would say '3' for Aliens vs Predator as it's a bonus-level feature only.

But you don't need to stick to that. Be as descriptive as you like :)

Oh, and include the platform (DOS, Win, PS2, etc...) as well, of course.

Heavy Gear and Heavy Gear II, although you're wearing a suit-mech-thing that makes you a cross between a soldier and a Battlemech.

Of course, the obvious one is Jet Pac for the Speccy, which has been remade for XBLA as Jet Pac Refuelled.

    Windom XP [3rdP, MP+B, 1] XP/Vista

    Exteel [3rdP, MP only, 1] XP/Vista

City of Heroes/Villains [3rdP, MMO, 1-3 (Depending on how you build your character and what missions you take)] XP/Vista. CoX has some missions which offer jetpacks as a reward upon completion, there's also the Flight power (do not think Hover is actual flight).

Maybe because the jetpack in Duke3D is booooring? There's no inertia, no acceleration. The thing stops on a dime and just... blergh. Ok, it adds to the overall awesomeness that is Duke3D, I'll give you that. But it's not a game you'd pick up if you want good jetpack-action. Now Giants, there's a good jeckpacking game.

I played nine shits out of Outwars demo, I have no idea why I never bothered to play the full version.

    Thanks for reminding me.

Also kinda unrelated, but you might be interested in Shattered Horizon.

You're welcome! Funny thing is, I never played it, just remembered seeing it in magazines in my childhood.

    Thought of two more, too:
    MDK2 [3rdP, SP, 1]
    Worms 3D [3rdP, SP/MP, 3]
And, if 3D games with 2D gameplay count: Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project [sideview, SP, 2]

    Dark Void

This one is scheduled for release in May on PC and Consoles. It doesn't have a mobygames page but I thought it deserves a mention because it looks like a jet pack will play a prominent role. Not to mention a nice looking cover system which I am an absolute sucker for.

Looks like it is a single player 3rd person.

Not to mention you can build things out of Lego-like blocks. There's no Mobygames page, so I just linked the official website.

Pilotwings 64 isn't a DOS game, but it came out in '96 and had great jetpack physics.

The jetpack was a small part of DN 3d. It played a much bigger role in Terra Nova. /argument.

Look, the OP asked for 3D games with a jetpack.

Duke Nukem 3D is a 3D game with a jetpack.

    Why is this so hard?
