What, no Little Sister figurine to go with the Big Daddy from the original?
Nothing there strikes me as being worth the premium to be honest, though the art book sounds nice.
BioShock 2 Special Edition announced:
The Special Edition will come in 13"x13” premium packaging with special art on both the slipcase and the box cover. Inside, you will find three posters featuring vintage ads from Rapture (rolled), a vinyl 180g LP featuring the orchestral score from the original BioShock, a CD containing the BioShock 2 orchestral score, a 164 page 8"x11" hardbound artbook chock full of developer commentary and, of course, a copy of BioShock 2.
This edition will be available on February 9th, 2010 for $99.99 for Xbox 360 and PS3 and $89.99 for Games for Windows LIVE and is limited to a single production run. You'll be able to preorder the Special Edition in most countries worldwide, starting now.

$89-ish is sort of a standard for Special Editions, isn't it?
The LP is a nice collector's item and a very interesting choice, and I expect the art book will be interesting.

I'm not sure whether I was being sarcastic or not. I suspect if there was one I would feel some minor compulsion to buy the CE so my Big Daddy wouldn't feel lonely. And it does seem a bit odd that there isn't really a Big Ticket Item in it, unless they go the Dragon Age DLC bonus route in addition.
It'll be interesting to see if we even get it here, if the markup is the same as standard games here it'll be the equivalent of ~130 USD to buy...
I guess the orchestral score is the big ticket item.
Different sites can't seem to agree whether it's the orchestral score from BS1 or the new score from BS2. But really, who cares.
IIRC, the Bioshock Collector's Edition had a few remixes of the original score, and 2K posted about half of the original score on their website. But the original score did not include the licensed songs, and those were were the real jewels of the Bioshock soundtrack. If anything, they were underutilized in the game.
If the special edition contained the 2 dozen or so licensed tracks from Bioshock, that would be something to be impressed with. But if it's just the orchestral score, well then forget it.

Even though I wasn't around when those songs were popular, hearing "(How Much Is That) Doggy in the Window" brought back a lot of memories of when my grandmother would sing me to sleep with that song. They were the classics, and it would have been nice if they were included. It doesn't sound like these will be any different.
Hearing "If I Didn't Care" by The Inkspots makes me feel nostalgia for The Shawshank Redemption.

Bah, why is the PC version priced the same the console releases? NZ gets shafted again.
The standard edition is $59 NZD on cdwow.co.nz, which is a great price for a new release. You'll probably have to wait like 7-10 days since the product is shipped from HK, but I doubt that any of us are in a rush to play BS2. The price tag makes the wait a moot point, IMO.
Seems pretty insanely expensive to me.
I mean, this is selling for a $40 premium over the normal version. For comparison, the Morrowind special edition (featuring the nice figurines, the sountrack, and the artbook) costs $10 extra, and the Warcraft 3 special edition (huge art book, DVD, soundtracks, lithographs, fancy box, and a fancy ass manual) for $15 extra. This is a total ripoff by comparison.
Well if the soundtrack were sold standalone, it'd be $20 (for the record, anyway), and I imagine printing a hardbound manual wouldn't be cheap. I don't feel like this is especially overpriced. And I'm actually glad it doesn't come with anything that I'd have to display—I'd rather it not include junk like figurines.
they will also release a "rapture" edition of the game including the art book. that's actually the version for me. I'm always more interested in the game art than a figurine.
A vinyl LP? That's novel... in an ironic sort of way. I highly doubt that I'd whip out my old turntable to play it, if I bothered to buy it. As for the rest of the buyers... would they even remember turntables?
Depends on how they grew up, really. I know what turntables are, but only because my parents would always play their Christmas albums on them (until they realized they could record them onto tapes and preserve the vinyl). Although it's important to remember that vinyl is not as dead as you might think.
