Best way to revisit Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss and Ultima Underworld II?

DOSBOX? remakes? were there any ports?

this section seems quite.. dead, why?

Dosbox. The only ports I am aware of are for Windows CE (of all things), and Japanese PS1. Most remakes didn't really get anywhere, although I did make a full set of maps for UT you can mess around with.

I suggest running UW1 at 12500 cycles and UW2 at 20000 cycles. They can get a bit glitchy if they are running too fast. No idea what the default settings are if you get them from GoG.

There haven't been any successful remakes, although many have tried and failed. Years ago, someone recreated the first game using the Morrowind game editor but I never got around to trying it.
As to your question around the lack of activity in this forum, that is unsurprising considering the age of the games. UW1 will celebrate its 10th birthday next March.

Well I don't know of any remakes but you could try the spiritual successor called Arx Fatalis. It's an excellent game.

Twisty, do you know how or where I can get a copy of that Morrowind Underworld remake?

It seems that the MW UW remake was also abandoned so am unsure if the game is able to be completed:

There's also the Abysmal project that one of our forum members (eddy) was working on. (Sourceforge project here). I suspect the lack of recent activity means it's been abandoned as well which is a shame as it was looking promising.

Twisty: Thanks for the link but the main file download has been removed. Yeah guess it's a lost cause. Oh well back to Morrowind!

Dosbox, but pay attention to the top post here to adjust the sound buffer. Otherwise it'll occasionally stutter or make random beeps.

I was delving into the Ultima Underworld remakes and was surprised myself that none of them came past alpha-stage.. and they all seem to have died off. Many reasons/excuses was that UW can be made to run on modern systems easily (via DOSBox or some tweaking).

However, I still would like the remakes developed further, for hopes to get Android ports so we can play on our phones during long commutes to/from work, etc.

Here's the 7th remakes I list here for information and interest purposes:

    Abysmal Engine: https://sourceforge.net/projects/abysmal/
    Labyrinth of Worlds: https://sourceforge.net/projects/low/
TSSHP (The System Shock Hack Project): https://sourceforge.net/projects/tsshp/
    Underworld Adventures: https://sourceforge.net/projects/uwadv/
    Underworld 2 Revival: https://sourceforge.net/projects/uw2rev/
    Ultima Underworld Remake: https://sourceforge.net/projects/uwsa/
Underworld Game Creation Kit (UGCK): http://www.peroxide.dk/ugck/

As much as I would have loved to see an Underworld remake, it shouldn't be remotely surprising that none of these got further than they did. What would be surprising would be if one of them succeeded. Projects like these are incredibly hard, and invariably spare-time efforts by solo developers, or tiny teams, without any source code for the original game logic. The odds are hugely against them.

It's getting harder these days as time moves along. Either we get married have children, discover new hobbies/interest or get swamped with all these new PC/console games.

I will try try and get these 7 projects checked, built and updated (to at least run on Win7, etc), and make it easier to build if we downloaded from sourceforge (even though nowadays everyone's moving on to using GIT)

I think you missed the best of them all. The best part is its almost done. If you check page 11 post 4 there's a video of the whole game being played. Its just a few bug fixes and its ready. Its on the unity engine and I can't wait. It just the first game but I think he plans the second next. Here's a link for you all to page 1 in the systemshock.org forums. https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=6045.0

I feel a distinction needs to be made between a port and a remake as the two categories appear to be used interchangeably. Almost all of the ones made to date have been attempts to port the game to other engines using existing game assets rather than developing new ones. While both categories require a significant amount of work, the latter is probably too ambitious for one person to do by themselves due to the variety of systems and assets that need to be incorporated into the engine: art, physics, sound, interface, objects, animations, character skinning, AI, scripting, inventory management etc.

That's fantastic! How has this never been pointed out here before?!?

I still suspect that this will need to implement certain parts of the game's logic based more on observation of the original in action than replication of the actual algorithms, but it really does sound like it's got a good chance of being completed. Amazing!

How close is this to the original logic, physics?

Will we be able to get an Android app?

It had been mentioned over here before: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142973
I have downloaded what´s on GitHub and gave it a spin back in August and it already worked quite well, but with some essential functionality missing.
I´m following the development of this tool and cannot wait to replay UW with it.
