    Playing Deus Ex 1st time

I've never played Deus Ex before. Don't know anything about it except it is often popular with Thief fans so I'd rather go in blind as far as the story goes. I've got the GOTY edition on Steam.

I'm just wondering if there's any mods or updates that I should install that improve (without changing) the game? Texture packs or AI improvements etc like there are with Thief ? I saw the thread for the unofficial patch for DE2. Is there something similar for DE1?

edit... I've found the Helios Texture Overhaul, that looks good

It depends on what you are looking for.

If you want to stay closest to the original experience, I would go with New Vision only. There's really no downside with that mod; it doesn't change the look of the game, it just takes the blur out of environment textures displayed on a high resolution monitor.

HTO on Default starts taking some liberties, some things don't look as they do in the original game, but they are not major ones from what I can tell. There's some environmental texture changes from Revision that I would prefer stayed in Revision. But HTO improves the characters without really changing how they look. I like that, because I'm so used to how the characters look. The character models in HDTP are well done, but they are different enough from the originals that it's hard to get comfortable with them. Since you're starting fresh, that might not be a hangup for you.

Revision is a bigger graphical overhaul. It combines some of the major convenience, bug fix, and visual mods that preceded it, including New Vision and HDTP (which is optional), but it goes way beyond that with many more new textures, revised lighting, and expanded maps. The lighting changes are good. The map changes are a mixed bag IMHO and a couple of the hub levels are worse than the originals. Revision is pretty good at preserving the original gameplay, although the revised maps did change my approach in a few places.

Play through once the way it is. Then add gmdx.

Only tweaks I do are a.) map update (to fix some bugs that made it into the GotY edition but were patched out in the original game) b.) version 2 of the unofficial patch to fix a potential game-breaking bug involving a character not appearing c.) directx10 renderer. Basically completely vanilla with bugfixing/modern system compatibility.

Have you played GMDX 9? I played it many years and versions ago when it was mostly bug fixes, balancing, and gameplay polish. I liked it. But I just went to the website and see it's up to version 9 and the changes are now pretty extensive. I wonder how far it's gotten from the original experience.

Basically, I'm getting itchy for more Deus Ex, but I can't decide whether to play GMDX again, or the Nameless Mod 2.0, or have another go at Mankind Divided.

I would do the Nameless mod. My other favorites are Zodiac and Redsun 2020.

Yeah, I like those too. I've been meaning to play Redsun again, but TNM just released a re-do of the first half of their game so I'm going to try that.

Wait what? On TNM's site the news hasn't been updated since 2011, and the ModDB page hasn't been updated since 2019.

Here is the best place to follow it now:

I don't know who is supposed to be maintaining the TNM web site. ZeroPresence is now leading the mod. He's the level designer who did a lot of TNM's major maps. He wasn't satisfied, particularly with the city maps, which were too sprawling and empty, so he started re-doing them. And then kept going. I found out about it in August after it showed up on Steam workshop. He ported it to Revision which was already on Steam. Apparently most if it is done, except the space station and bug fixes. I'm going to give it a try. Will report back.

I still play the original game. Guess I'm stuck with moddb.

I still have my original GOTY edition, which stays installed with all the mods & stuff I've built up, including TNM 1. This was a 6GB download (Revision + TNM 2) and it's a separate installation through Steam, so it didn't touch my GOTY install.

With TNM1 and TNM2 installed at the same time, I was able to play a few hours yesterday and compare back and forth a little bit. The biggest change so far is to the opening hub level, downtown. The original is large, sprawling, and mostly empty, with lots of blocky buildings you can't explore separating the different parts of the map. The quest locations and points of interest are more spread out, which allows for different places on the map to have a different look and feel. But it's tedious to run across. The new level is more densely packed and more detailed. It looks better, but feels different from the original.
