If it's in the same weapon slot as the sword, you'll need to use the Next Weapon and Previous Weapon keys to access it - check your bindings.

I've never done anything like that in Thief before. Didn't know it was possible. . .well, you learn something new every day, I guess.

Sadly, I think my playing of this mission has come to an end. I got the wizard's staff but now I can't get out of the pit. I'm currently on top of the big pillar underneath the giant crystal cluster on the ceiling and I know what I have to do to get out, but it doesn't work for me. I've tried time after time to jump onto the vine I need to climb out, but Garrett just falls through it instead of catching it. I don't know what else to try so that's it for me.

My overall impression of this FM is that it's beautiful, but extremely non-intuitive and very frustrating.

    Hey,
I'm stuck in the mission 1 for too long. I've done two things for keeper Jonas (got the thingy back to him in the crystal. The door to the Cozy Inn (or something along these lines) is still closed and so are all the doors in the Inn. I've seen on a walkthrough, that these door get opened at some point - am I missing something or are these just scripts that didn't work?
As much as I love the visuals and general exploring I'm at the brink of dumping it, as it's ridiculously challenging. I hate attempting 20 times to get past one guard or to get this jump onto the rope right, which is a buggy thing in the engine anyway. So frustrating gameplay... So, yeah if you tell me these doors should have been opened by now, I'm probably not going to restart it... :/
    I'm playing on Normal btw.

I've checked my notes on this campaign, and there are a few possibilities how this might have happened. I will describe now how things should happen in the mission.

While you proceeded in the mission, a goal like 'Maybe I can find a spare room in that little inn near the HoS. I must also check the guest book in "ST" inn.' should have appeared; most likely after you have returned the crystal with the captured being to Jonas. When you returned that crystal and spoke to Jonas for quite some time, he should have mentioned that you need to stay for a while. He should have given you money to rent a room. Garrett should have replied something with "no free space in my pockets". After this conversation, you should at least have the aforementioned goal. The door to the "Clean & Cozy Inn" should be open then.

After this, you have to check out the guest books of both inns in order to find a room. You will find out that there's no free room in any of the inns, and your objective concerning inns should change; "There are no available rooms anywhere. But this is not a problem for you, right?" should appear in your goals list. This means you should find an uncommon solution to your lodging problem.

Now, there are two bugs that can make the mission unplayable. They are usually triggered beyond this point by the player. I'll mention them without spoiler cover now, but keep descriptions a bit obscure if possible.

The first bug is: You will at one point get the goal to read a mage's notes. Once you have these notes, you may only read them once (in fact, you have to read them). If you read them again later on, bad things may happen. So, if you need to read them again, do it after saving your game, and reload that save before continuing.

The second bug may occur or not, depending on the order in which the player completes some goals. To avoid this bug, which gets you stuck just before finishing the mission, do not enter Mr. Clemans room until you have completed a goal requiring you to fetch something from a dead man. You'll see what I mean once you get there, I think.

You may already be a victim of the first one of these bugs, but it is unlikely at this stage of the mission.

And now back to your tasks, young Garrett!

Thanks baeuchlein for this extensive information - really appreciate it.
Now, I definitely do not have a goal 'Maybe I can find a spare room in that little inn near the HoS. I must also check the guest book in "ST" inn.' I'll see if there's some more conversations with Jonas I could have missed maybe. I can't remember if he is still there in his room or not. In case he's gone, I have some progressive saves, so maybe not all is lost...

    Thanks again for your help!

In the latest version of mission 1 there were no bugs with scripts. Just this thing turned out to be too confusing, and I'm not sure that now I myself could have finished it without wanderings.

baeuchlein, you are as always on top.

    Two questions:

Where can I find the pick axe.

    Thanks for any help.
This is a very difficult mission to play.

    Gloria:
    1. Frob book on bookcase at far end of Jonas room.
    2. Pickaxe is leaning against the wall of a building just before you get to the police station.

Thanks Dahenjo, I needed that info. I searched the bookcase in there, but probably not close enough.

What's up next too do please? I can't get in the cozy inn, nor the house of science. Do I need the crystal first? Where can I find it?

Thanks in advance. I really want to crack this one

It's been a while since I've played it Gloria, so I don't remember the order of everything. You'll get access to the inn at a certain point when you finish doing stuff for Jonas. The crystal is outside the science bldg .. look for a small blue cloud floating above the side entrance and climb up on a statue to get to it.

Soul Tear did a playthrough/walkthrough with all loot/secrets/goals/etc:

To get into the Clean & Cozy Inn, you have to fulfil Jonas' "crystal quest" first. When you talk to him and finish the conversation by keeping to talk to him until he repeats his former answers, Jonas should give you an empty crystal. Your task is to go to the House of Science and look for something unusual there, put it into the crystal and return the crystal to Jonas again. The unusual thing at the House of Science is a strange cloud hovering above the rear entrance. Climb up via the statues there (it can be a bit tricky to get onto the small roof above the entrance, but it is possible), then try to use the hovering cloud. Capture the cloud by using the empty crystal with it. Garrett should comment on that action. Afterwards, return to Jonas' hiding place and give the filled crystal back to him.

Once the crystal is returned to Jonas, talk to him again until his ears fall off. I think he should then give you money to rent a room, and tell you to stay for a while. Now you can look for a room in the inns, including the Clean & Cozy. More details on all that "inn business" are given in my post above, from October 30th, 2017.

About entering the House of Science: You will neither do that in the first nor in the second mission of this campaign. Things take unexpected turns after a while.

Generally, if the player is stuck in the "Keeper of Infinity campaign", he/she should try to fulfil his/her objectives one at a time. If the player cannot do anything about the goal currently pursued, one should skip to the next one, and so on. This may be a lengthy and probably very artificial feeling procedure, but I think it should usually lead the player back on track.

    Thanks again.

Bauechlein, I already did all that already. i can't open a room upstairs in the cozy inn and can't jump over the ledge out of room 1 even when using a rope arrow.

I never gave up in a mission, but this one I will abandone for now. I'm getting to frustrated with things not working out as they should.

I think this mission's look and atmosphere are simply amazing. I was especially impressed with the live patrons at the bar. This felt a lot more natural than a bunch of AI just sitting around. I really appreciate the extensive effort that went into this mission, however it becomes very tedious when players have to recheck the entire map for changes every time an objective is completed.

Edit: I managed to get into a room that has floating stones. Besides obtaining some loot I can't do anything else and the window is blocked by an invisible object. How do I get out?

Edit 2: I figured it out.

Gloria I went into room 1 and then carefully climbed out the window. I walked along the ledge to the other side of the Inn. There is a gap in the ledge so I found it easiest to shoot a rope arrow at the wood block at the Apex of the roof, and then I jumped to the rope and then to the other ledge. The window for room 3 is nearby.

Hi Taffers, this is some frustrating mission.
I've read several pages of this thread, but with no luck because I'm stuck.
I read about getting to the guard shack through catacombs of a church????? Where am I to go?
I can't get rid of the seal at the archway at this point.
    Please spoil me.

Reading a few pages of a topic is definitely not the best of ways. Why not watch the my video-walkthrough which is kindly added to the first post of the topic?

Unfortunately, even as an author, I absolutely cannot help you with this description. I can only say that there are no catacombs in this mission, it is just the name of the goal, which will be canceled later.

I'm afraid this will be a long post once again. I'm infamous for those.

The idea behind the catacombs, the church and the guard shack is, as Soul Tear already hinted at, that Garrett first plans to go to an old church in the woods where some catacombs underneath contain something interesting. During the mission, he learns that there is a gate which he must open in order to enter the woods. The key to that gate is somewhere in a guard station. This guard station is located before the gate to the woods, and the best point of entry is a shack attached to the guard station. Thus, once Garrett knows about the key and its whereabouts, he plans to steal that key.

However, there is a magical barrier before the wood gate and the shack. During the mission, Garrett should read the notes of Thereon, telling him that Thereon created the barrier and expects it to hold for about two hours. The player should then visit the place with the barrier every now and then, and notice that it has vanished at some point in the mission.

In the mission, the barrier does not vanish after two hours playing time, but rather once the player reaches a certain point in the game, after which the two hours should be over.

To proceed, you have to find Keeper Jonas again. If you have not done so already, visit his hideout again. He should not be present there anymore, which is a perfect opportunity to search the place for clues about what secrets the Keepers did not tell Garrett this time. Searching well should yield a hidden, barely visible switch or button, located to the left of a statue in a niche. This opens a small cabinet near the fireplace, where Garrett can grab Jonas' diary. Reading it reveals that Jonas has a second hideout, somewhere in the sewers. This is where Garrett should go, then.

A warning abot the diary: In older versions of the campaign, the diary should be read only once. There is a bug that can occur if the player reads it more than once. If you need to read it a second time, save your game before reading, read it, and then reload your save from before reading again. This prevents the bug from occurring.

There is only one entrance to the sewers, a hatch to the left of the Police station's door, near Lady Adaline's house. With the crowbar (found near the beginning of the mission in a guard tower the player had to pass through), the sewer hatch should open, and Garrett can enter the realm of feces and stench. After going through some rooms, Garrett should reach a place where he can see an open door. Behind that door lies Jonas' second hideout.

Unfortunately, Jonas seems to be a bit too dead to answer any questions. However, searching the dead body should reveal a small key ("Attic key"). This key was mentioned in Thereon's notes; it should open the attic of the "Stumbling Traveler" inn. So, go back there.

The door to the attic is located on the top level of the inn. Go up the stairs, then turn right sharply and walk past the people at the tables there. Behind them, the door to the attic waits for your newfound key. Unlock the door and get up there. On a barrel, there should be a thief's diary, and Garrett should read it.

The mission goals can now change a few times during the next minute or so. Finally, Garrett remembers the crystal he obtained for Jonas. Since Jonas can't give the crystal to the Keepers now, Garrett wants to get it and deliver it to the Keepers himself. So, head for the sewers again, go to the room where the dead body lies... and save before entering that room. Something dangerous is going to happen.

Once Garrett tries to "use" (frob) the dead body, bad things happen. The lights go out and two large brutish monsters teleport in. The player can try to hide in a corner or otherwise evade the monsters, which will vanish again after a short time. Garrett then decides to have a talk about the monsters with the Keepers later on, and does not search for the crystal anymore. The "crystal goal" should be fulfilled or cancelled now. Do not forget to visit this place in order to get the crystal, or you might hit another bug and get stuck in the last room in the mission!

After all this hassle, however, the magic barrier near the rear entrance to the House of Science should have vanished, and you can look for the key to the wood gates in the guards' shack.

@ Soul Tear: I did watch your video's but they were way too dark for me to see what to do at some point.

@ Baeuchlein: Thanks for the info. I had been to the dead Jonas before and already have the attic key. I thought it was meant for the attic at the cosy Inn and that it couldn't be opened yet.

    On my way again. Thanks

On my monitor it seems quite acceptable. I will try to increase the brightness in the future.

No sweating needed here. The bug only occurred if the player did things in a specific order, leaving the crystal task for the last moment, and then passed by the end room, recognized that it is accessible, and then went in to do a little mischief to the current inhabitant. I discovered that only this year, I think, and then fixed it for myself anyway.

Concerning "dark monitors": There is a lot of variation in brightness as well as color if one has different monitors to compare. I frequently use a TV set instead of the small display on my laptop, and the TV set is a lot darker than the laptop display, and looks more "reddish" than the "blueish" laptop display. If I set gamma right for the TV in "Thief", there are no realistic shadows anymore on the laptop display. No wonder it is so difficult to find a brightness setting that is useful for everyone.
