If you read the forum's guidelines it would tell you to use the 'Search' function... there was a thread here very recently that talked about that issue.

Anyway, 'Salt the Fries' is a message that you get in the end of the credits when you finish SS1 (along with two others, like 'Bloodshot Pizza Box' or something like that, and another one than mentions caffeine, if I remember well, all signed by 'Bart'). It has something to do with the fries from some fast food place where the guys working on SS1 used to get their food from, and they used to write down in the fries' boxes 'Remember to salt the fries'. Sorry, not a very good explanation... I used to know this, but my memory has become a bit vague about this issue...

OK, here you have a better explanation that David wrote:

While working late on SS1, a couple of Looking Glass employees would go out to get Macdonalds' "food". As there were a lot of employees there was a lot of food. Macdonalds' packed it into a box for them, on many occasions the boxes used were those that Macdonald's branches get their fries delievered in. As a reminder to the employees cooking the fries there was a message printed along the side of the box. That message was "Please Don't forget to Salt the Fries". and that's where it came from

oh this reminds me of yesterday when I was at my friend's house who works at Mcdonald's and she had one of those fries boxes that said "Don't forget to salt the fries" on it. I had a chuckle.

Hey folks. I came across this thread and wanted to set the record straight.

We didn't get Mcd's every day, it was a once or twice a month kind of thing. The box said "Salt the Fries" on it, quotes included, and we just thought that was this weird admonition, and so we would use it as a slogan. Like, "Seize the day; Salt the fries." It's possible that someone (Art?) still has the cardboard side of the box.

    Sorry for the necro.

Decades later, we still have to salt the fries.

Weirdly, at In'n'Out, they salt the fries plenty but still give you salt packets with them. I use the salt packets to salt the burgers.

The way that particular topic in the Unofficial System Shock FAQ is worded, I always assumed eating McDonalds was during crunch time, not every day.

"Back when the LG team was working late-night on SS, one of the employees would go out to McDonalds and order like 15 or 16 Extra Value Meals, or something like that. However, the guys at McDonalds, due to the excess baggage, had to pack all the food into their boxes which they received from the manufacturing plant (Fries, Burgers, etc..). On those boxes, the people at Mickey D's put some quotes on there. On the French Fries boxes, they put the quote "Salt the Fries." The dudes at LG though this was funny, so they cut up all the boxes with "Salt the Fries" on it and pasted them all over the office. Hence, the "Salt the Fries" line was born. Remember, it's not Salt the Fries, it's "Salt the Fries." (A quote from Doug [Church] at E3)."
