Thread: What ARE you playing in 2020?

Well the 2 singleplayer mods offer different things. Wanted a more story driven and less action focus direction? Autumn Leaves is great for that and quite short (a few hours max). Wanted to see actual war and not just small skirmishes? The New California mod (formerly Project Brazil) is the one to go for.

The Frontier I can't speak on since its not out yet. Looks like it has driveable vehicles (eg tanks) which is a Fallout first.

Oh man, what have I done? Despite of having a million unplayed games in my library, I just had to go and start a new game in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, even though I only finished it last year. This time I started with the hardcore difficulty, plus I'm playing with my XBox One controller, aaand I've now got all the DLC that there is. And damn, I still love this game! It has its fair share of flaws and it's far from perfect; I could think of a lot of things that could be improved and a bunch of things that I find quite frustrating, but still it's by far my favourite game of the last few years.

Choosing the hardcore difficulty was definitely the right thing to do; the combat feels a bit more realistic that way, but it's actually a bit disappointing to see that it's not really that hard. However, the biggest change is that there's no compass or auto-map that tells you where you are on the map, and that does make navigating quite challenging at times! I've managed to get so badly lost that it's embarrassing, but I've started to enjoy the challenge, and even learned to navigate a bit using the stars! I bet there aren't many games where you can do that! There's no auto-travel either, but I never used that so much anyway, so I'm cool with that.

To my surprise I also find this game a lot more fun when playing with a controller. The inventory and menus can be a bit awkward to navigate occasionally, but melee combat particularly feels so much better now. Somehow it just didn't feel right at all with KB+M. I wish I had done this on my first play through.

Right now I'm already about halfway through the story and I'm about to start the Band of Bastards DLC, having just finished A Woman's Lot - I highly recommend the latter at least! The world feels a lot smaller this time around, but I still love it how authentic it all feels. The forests especially in this game are lovely - I'd play KCD even if it was just a walking simulator where you can wander through the land, and admire the sunrises and sunsets and flowing little forest streams and other beautiful things.

    What a game.

An oversight during OS reinstallation wiped out my enormous list of games in progress, so I went ahead and started up a Faith build in the Switch Dark Souls. Thinking about what "faith" means in this context, I decided this character is only allowed to act against the pantheon after discovering conclusive evidence of their wrongdoing. It will most likely end just outside the Pyre, waiting for Gwyn to finish burning away, so that I can take his place immediately after.

Right now I only have evidence against the Witch of Izalith, who has clearly fucked something up now that half her daughters are spiders. I joined the Chaos covenant, remembering the shortcut... only to discover the shortcut was immediately beyond the Lordvessel gate. That was a genuine disappointment, though obvious in retrospect. Thankfully I had not yet lost my stash of humanity, so no time was wasted in grinding. My next step as a faithful character will be to follow Reah and aid in her undertaking.

My information about the Bells came from suspicious sources, so I haven't rung either yet. I consider both Anor Londo siblings and both primordial serpents to be dishonest, so I'm not sure how I'll have to justify later proceedings. Also, I've never played the DLC, so that'll be a treat.

Edit: I've posted my thoughts on the Dark Souls cosmology in the neighboring subforum.

Just started messing around with AER (currently an EGS freebie) and so far it's a chill experience just flying around the various sky islands and entering the story "dungeons". These "dungeons" have so far had no combat or fall damage, along with fairly simple puzzles and platforming. While the story has talked about this evil entity that's doing evil things, it doesn't feel like there's any danger present.

Edit: And I don't consider the lack of danger a negative for this game, as to me it's more about the experience of flying around and taking in the sights.

I loved the flying in AER so much that ever since playing it I've been on the lookout for any games with unpowered flight hoping to find something equally enjoyable, but I've yet to come across anything as good. The dungeons were just something to get over with so I could get back to the flying and I don't even remember what the story was, but yeah, I really loved the flying bit.

You should play A Short Hike then, if you haven't already.

I played AER a year or two ago, and from what I can remember it was quite a nice little indie game, but also a bit forgettable. It would have helped if the locations or the few characters in the game had been a bit more interesting.

I have; what a pleasant game! It's nice to go back just to muck about for a bit although I've done all I can find to do. I hope they make some sort of a sequel or a director's cut or something (they already extended it once from the original Humble Trove version so they're clearly not opposed to the idea).

I think that a big part of the charm probably is that the game doesn't outstay its welcome, but A Short Hike almost does the opposite - it barely has welcomed you by the time you realise that you've reached the end of the game! I know it's quite literally a short hike indeed and the bird fella had already done what he was supposed to do, but it still felt like the adventure was only supposed to start. So yes, some more content for A Short Hike would be lovely!

Btw, how was the original version different?

A Short Hike's up next for me, whenever Dark Souls and Dragon Quest Builders let go.

Maybe you've already gathered this much, but just in case you haven't: A Short Hike is literally a very short game! You could easily rush through it in an hour if you like, or if you're like me and prefer to explore things more thoroughly, it might take you around two hours. So you might even play through it when Dark Souls is kicking you in the head and you want a little break from dragons and undead things. A Short Hike is a really fun experience and it's guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Let us know how you like it when you get around to playing it!

I know I'll enjoy A Short Hike. That's why I haven't started it yet. This year is for grimdark games, including Dragon Quest Builders.

Edit: Okay, Dragon Quest Builders is grimbright, but you get the point.

If that's the case, you can not say you've done what you set out to if you don't play a bunch of Warhammer Fantasy and 40k games.

I'm back. Sorry. You reminded me of that time when a friend spontaneously launched into a half-hour explanation of orc sexuality. It started with, "Actually, orcs are fungi..."

And now, well, I'm just gonna wait until a Warhammer 40k game comes out that properly depicts their sexuality. Anything less than that would be outright disrespectful to the deep lore of that universe.

I just played through it again to refresh my memory. Any excuse. Fishing definitely wasn't in, but I think that's the only actual mechanic they added (I'm not super sure about beachstickball though). The boat wasn't there, and if trashtag isle and Mystery Island were in the original version I never found them. The camper that lost their permit was added I'm pretty sure. Then there's some window dressing like the brick house with the tractor outside, although I might've just forgotten about that one. So nothing major, the broad strokes were all the same, just a bit of extra stuff to fill in the world.

I guess I should spoiler tag that for the benefit of those who've yet to plumb the wonders of Hawk Peak Provincial Park, as minor as it is.
