My original CDs got scratched at some point, and I remember trying to find some individual files that refused to install properly... maybe you were experiencing something similar?
I can't remember what I had for breakfast that morning some days, so trying to remember something from 2001 is about as futile! :-P
Oh my god, you might have nailed it actually. I was pretty shy about my disposition of being on the road nearly constantly - basically slightly better than homeless, that I may not have admitted my CD was scratched. Hmm I think disk 2 was most of the textures as well.
