Maybe I'm just piling on, but this sounds to me like an extremely cool idea that has almost no chance of succeeding. I don't see how you can adequately account for the human variable, unless you restrict their options so greatly that you may as well be fighting AI anyway.

Assuming all these players weren't having a blast with their 10-on-10, and don't mind seeing their gametype arbitrarily changed because some dickhead wants to get past level two in his solo game. As Uncia pointed out, you're not always dealing with the most well-adjusted individuals when you're gaming online, and even perfectly reasonable people may not be too thrilled with the idea of having their game interrupted for someone else's benefit.

I'd imagine there'd be a server option to allow/disallow Crossplay, and a handful of dedicated Crossplay servers hosted by Arkane/Valve/whomever. Probably something clientside so you can turn Crossplay off and just play through the campaign without having to deal with server searches and dickheads as well.

I'm really hyped about Crossing. the idea sounds fresh, the setting and visuals look incredible, plus they have the DoMM-like meelee system. And that grapling hook if the shooting system will be nice and they will work on having a good AI it might be finally a FPS that will top FEAR's combat.
Plus...really... have you seen the 1Up long trailer? Is it just me or was it narrated by Stephen Russell?

Also..it's done by their Austin offices s we can be preety sure the people there know how to make good FPS

I see two potential problems with this:

    1. Dickheads who have no interest in Crossplay (are we capitalizing for any particular reason?) but who haunt Crossplay servers just for the opportunity to fuck with legitimate players. We all know perfectly well that there are more than a few assholes like that out there.

    2. You get tired of the dickheads and disable Crossplay - what's to make it stand out from other standard single-player FPSs at that point? If Crossplay is the big giggle and you take it out of the equation, what are you left with?

So, before anyone gets too excited about all this, I know we're still very early in the game (so to speak), and I know that Arkane probably has a couple guys with a little more experience than I in the realm of game design who've been thinking about these problems, and it's way to soon to start with the HOLY FUCKING DOOM AND GLOOM, BATMAN. But given the extremely limited amount of information currently floating around out there, forecasts of cataclysmic disaster and/or shitty sales are about all we have to do in this forum. So I figure we might as well go with it.

high quality, story-driven FPs with amazing combat and art style? Seems enough for me

Arkane sold out and abandoned the promise of Arx Fatalis. Now you wish to reward this decision by giving them a new forum.

If this was Deus Ex-like game I wouldn't be complaining. But in the end its gonna be a spruced up FPS.

Why can't they team up with Valve and make a REAL CRPG. Valve has limitless resources. They have the cash to write their own ticket and answer to NO publishers. The possibilities could have been endless.

Instead we have yet another shooter.

I know, it's horrible how Arkane Studios wants to make the game they want to make, and how they also want to make money. By not doing what you want them to do, they've sold out - and that after all the love and commitment you've put into them. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I was never really into Arx, so I'm actually glad they're not making Arx2.

As for Crossplayer: Bold concept, seems to be very innovative for which I've much gratitude for any developer.... but damn why does it have to be....multiplayer? I've yet to wait for an innovative Singleplayer FPS that can surpass Deus Ex. Junction Point? Irrational?

    *cough* BioShock? *cough*

    Well, maybe. We'll see.

Am I the only person who thinks that this isn't entirely a new concept, but more of an extension of Perfect Dark's Counter-Op mode?

Either way, I can't say I'm sold just yet. This is mainly because I've found myself playing far more singleplayer games than multiplayer ones since I don't have to put up with elitist asswipes who slander me and my mother just because they have more frags than I do. (The other reason is that most of the multiplayer games I'm interested in playing are just too demanding for an old AXP 1800+ system.)

And speaking of FPSs, I have an idea, but it may not be so much an FPS as much as it is a FPRPG with a dynamic campaign engine and other such features to enhance immersion...However, that should remain for another thread.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this The premise seems interesting, but what really grabbed me was the voice. *is too much of a Thief/Stephen Russell fan, apparently* Good to know he isn't hurting for work (with a voice like that?).

What happens when you want to replay the game years later and no one is playing online? Can you just not play?

I was wondering the same as I read through this thread. I guess that's just when the bots step in.

Interesting idea, but it seems a bit confusing. I'm not sure it'll work, precisely for that reason, but you never know.

The artistic premise is promising though!

Here's a shortcut to the trailer.

I'm still a bit wary of getting multiplayer in my singleplayer game. I envision dozens of teammates trying to make life as hard as possible for me, bunnyhopping, and making comments along the lines of "lol fagget".
The bit with the knight looked like a first-person Assassin's Creed, which is good.

Nice idea in theory but I don't think it could ever work with the 'human' element. The game looks interesting anyway but I really wish they would do another RPG. The Source engine (in particular the virtual actor tech) is just crying out to be used in something other than a FPS (Vampires used an early version and I felt that really helped with the immersion). I actual think an adventure game would be an even better idea for the Suurce engine.

I am not sure if DM really is a good example, because I could imagine that the huge quality problems (=bugs) they had might have negatively influenced the number of sold units.
