What's in a name? Deus Ex deed poll.

Okay, I've got the editor and now want to play around with it before I decide whether or not I'll ressurect some of my old FM ideas from Thief and convert them into something more appropriate for the Deus Ex universe (at last, large open spaces!!!)

So, here's my frivolous newbie question for you all:

How do I change the names, descriptions and properties of objects in the game?

I've always thought of Anna Navarre as that 'Stupid Cow' and it would be nice to see that reflected in the game when ever I look at her

Also, some of the descriptions of the various items, ammo and weapons could do with a bit of livening up.

Buckshot? Buckshite would be a better name!

Any Dromeders remember having fun with an arrow trap that was modified to shoot servants at you when activated...

To add a 'Stupid Cow' to a level, first add an AnnaNavarre and bring up its properties window. Go to Conversation and change FamiliarName and UnfamiliarName to 'Stupid Cow'.

If you want to change the name of every AnnaNavarre then this is a bit harder. First extract all the classes from UnrealEd and find the file AnnaNavarre.uc (in <gamedir>\deusex\classes) and open it in notepad. Next scroll down to the bottom of the file to the section of DefaultProperties and again change FamiliarName and UnfamiliarName.

Its a little different for changing the name of buckshot. Open AmmoShell.uc and go down to DefaultProperties and change 'ItemName' and 'beltDescription'.

After changing any of the .uc files you will have to recompile the deusex.u file by deleting (you proberly should back it up first) and running ucc make in the from a command prompt. This process is decribed in much more detail in the SDK documentation.

Thanks Simon! - that's the step I was missing

I'm off to have some fun

    Salut.

Actually, this is going to be the answer to one of my problems, isn't it?

I'm trying to change the JCDenton model for another one. If I change the mesh and skin in the properties, I've got to delete .u and recompile everything to get it to work, yes?

(And, now I'm thinking about it, do I have to export to get all the individual .uc files, yes?)

Well, it took a bit of fiddling, but I finally got some results.

I can't seem to get the text descriptions and names to change, but all the reworking I did with items and weapon stats has made it into the game.

BTW - I found that the multipliers for the augs are exponential. Normally, the level four speed aug has a multiplier of 1.8, but I decided to change it to 8.

When I started a new games, activated cheats and summoned the speed aug and a few upgrade cannisters, I got the shock of my life.

I was expecting to be able to move and jump about 4 times better than I could before.
Well, while standing on the dock, I faced toward the main part of Liberty Island moved forward and jumped - I landed in the water by the docks on the other side of the island!!!

I can also now do laps of the entire island in about 10 seconds!

But, what I really want is to get all the descriptions to change.
When I do 'ucc make' I'm asked if I want to rebuild "......\DeusEx\Inc\DeusExClasses.h" and the manul says to say "no"
I did try saying "yes", but it just causes a crash.

    *SIGH*

Some things you won't be able to rebuild. IE, that .h file is a header file, and would require you to have the source code to be able to recompile. There most likely is a way to change the name of, say, anna navarra, through a mutator and then a class replacement, but that won't happen until there's a mod-loader menu.

/me looks at the contents of his DX dir and chuckles.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

You can sub-class JCDentonMale in a new package, and change the bits you want to in there. That way you don't need to recompile the whole deusex class which will take bloody ages, and will make your game incompatible if multiplayer ever happens.

To get all the .uc files, click export all in UnrealEd.

Whoops, I forgot the rest of my post.
You will need to change user.ini (in the system directory) to point to your new class.
