Taffedinthehead is correct about the sword. I just replayed it, taking notes. I should be more responsive with future questions.

Yes, taffedinthehead, that is it. All that searching, and you simply get to the end. It's kind of a let down. Still, I have played it three times now, and I have enjoyed the game play and exploration each time. Since I know about the let down, it is not so much of a let down anymore.

Making progress. Found the sword ok. Now I have used the
    spoiler:
keeper's key to unlock the lock below the statue sitting in the fountain
. But what did it unlock? I listened carefully but heard nothing open. Geez this is a hard one.
Also, do I need to get the
    spoiler:
    fire talisman
way up high on the statue above the doors?

The Keeper's key unlocks two things.
    spoiler:
The lock by the statue opens a secret door behind a banner in a chapel.
    spoiler:
The key also opens a gate near the beginning.
    The talisman
    spoiler:
    is not something you get.
    spoiler:
    It is something you shoot.
It will become clear later. You are close to the end.

I think I beat the level: I used the Orz key on the Talisman Holder and found my way to the Giant Cathedral. However, after knocking out the guards and getting a key inside, there is nothing here. There is an empty treasure chest in the barracks, and I can see a switch through an iron gate.

Also - In the Casino room, there is a guard through an iron double-door near a stream. Can you get there?

Finished on Normal in 1 hour and 32 minutes with 201 of 251 total loot. I liked the original demo release a bit more. This final version is more polished and contains many new areas, but it forces backtracking from the old final area to the beginning of the mission. It also adds two mandatory secrets, one of which is a tiny button hidden in a non-obvious spot. I needed a hint from this thread to find it. The original demo release did not have backtracking and mandatory secrets, I managed to finish it without hints.

    Loot I picked up:
    spoiler:
    • A golden chalice in the kitchen near the prison area: 100
    • Coin stacks on a table in a room with two slot machines: 5 + 5 + 5 + + 12 + 12 + 12 + 25 + 25 = 101
    • It looks like there is a golden plate below a candle on the same table, but I could not pick it up.

Notable changes from the old demo release:
    spoiler:
    • Many large new areas were added.
    • Most of the old areas were given an overhaul. Sometimes it is small changes. For example, in the starting area a roof has been added and barrels on the floor were removed.
    • The wooden doors that could be bashed in with the blackjack but had nothing behind them were removed.
    • I had the feeling there are now more sound propagation issues near doors. In several places, I could not hear any sound when I was using the lockpicks.
    • Japanese text has been removed from the objective and map screens. All readables have been turned unfrobbable. The books folder in the game directory was removed.
    • In one room you previously had to frob a painting to get the ancient key behind it. You now can frob a book in a nearby shelf and the painting slides up. You can then retrieve the key from the niche behind the painting.
    • In one room there is a central pillar with four levers, three of which are frobbable. Two more pillars are on the side of this room, opposite from where you enter. You can bash in wooden planks hidden behind them. Behind the first plank one are two fire arrows. Behind the second one is a lever that lowers the plank in the adjacent lava room.
    • I now found eleven water arrows instead of just the one which is need for opening the secret door in one corridor. With the additional water arrows, I could now dispose of the fire elementals that are triggered when opening the blue chest that contains the sword.
    • Loot was added in the room with the two slot machines. In turn, loot in what was previously the final room was removed.

    Weird things I found:
    spoiler:
    • There is a small new area with City streets beyond the library. It is beyond the large double doors. They open when you push a small rectangular button hidden behind a ladder leading to the balcony in the library. In the new City streets area, there is a chest with eight mines hidden on a roof. If you go a bit out of bounds, you will also find a perpetually rotating Hammerite figurine.
    • If you press a rectangular button above a bush in the courtyard near the start, a ladder extends from an attic above the hall next to the courtyard. I got up to the attic by using a speed potion before jumping towards the ladder. Nothing up there except for a bed.
