    Background music issue

I've got this weird issue where the background music, which I've set to 0, cranks all the way up to max when I make a save. Sometimes it fades out again after a while, and sometimes it goes back to 0 instantly when entering another room/area. Any idea what is causing this?

    Video of the phenomenon:
    https://youtu.be/9c758P-KXbQ

    Log file:
    http://www.helbo.se/Sneaky.log

    Save file:
    http://helbo.se/59D51D01-149B3EB4-DD...0-99BF5CE8.rar

The log file is from a different session/installation than the save file, if this is an issue for troubleshooting I can provide a new log file.
But I've tried uninstalling/installing both the SU and the game itself multiple times with no change in the behavior.

Thanks for the uploads - I should probably have made a quick test before asking for those, because as it turns out it's an original bug. (You can start the unpatched game from the "Thief 3 Sneaky Upgrade" start menu group if you want to see for yourself.)

I'll have a look and if it's an easy fix, post some new files here. Otherwise it'll have to wait for the next release.

With this mod active the inputs tab in the options is just a black screen.

Do you have the Fonts and MP GUI mods enabled and an aspect ratio no wider than 16:10? If so, it's a known problem with the new MP fonts. As a work-around, disable one of the mods while changing keybinds.

    It is

    And use a DX8 wrapper (dgVoodoo2 -> http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2_62_3.zip or Crosire one -> https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases )

Or, if you prefer, the UCyborg hacked "original" d3d8 (MicroSoft one from Window 10 Build 17134 ): https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=47772

How can I get Thief SU to run fullscreen on Win10? I recently got an Asus ROG with RTX 2060. When I load or start a game, it stays on a black screen. No loading screen. But it runs fine it windowed/borderless, but the brightness setting is broken.

It's normal cause it's how Windows 10 now handles D3D context. There's no more "real fullscreen" in Windows 10, NO MORE (and no more issues related to it).
There is the infamous "Borderless Windowed Fullscreen" (a maximized window with no window manager borders) and the "Exclusive Fullscreen" acting as a fake version of the old fullscreen mode of Window 7.

For d3d8-era applications you must use a wrapper to make brightness/contrast/gamma controls work, see my posts above!

And of course install the Sneaky Upgrade (but do not use its wrapping technique if you are using external wrappers).

I have the latest version of SU installed. Would Voodoo fix the brightness issue? Is it the same as DX8? Or should I use both? I'm still a novice at the wrapping.

    dgVoodoo2 for sure.
And you'll have a nice control panel to configure the "virtual" GPU behaviour as you wish.

    Mutual exclusion.
dgVoodoo2 is a wrapper to d3d11 (it's kind of "pseudodriver"), the other is the original MicroSoft Win10 d3d8.dll patched to re-enable the "old" expected behaviour.

Another option (this one wraps to d3d9) "simply drag&drop": https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases

Game Suddenly Broken - Win10 Update The Cause?

Well, I step back into Theif 3 after about 6 months & two Win10 cumulative updates, and the game is broken. Both starting a new game & playing an old game is broken. Previously, the game ran perfect.

First, when starting a new game or loading an old game during the loading screen, I get the spinning Windows mouse cursor on screen. This has never happened before unless the game crashes. WTF?
Second, when the game loads, any direction other than straight forward/backward makes the entire screen glitch out by causing the entire screen (up / down / all sides) to be filled with blue fog as if I were up in the sky filled with blue clouds. Again WTF?

Does anyone know what is going on?

    UPDATE:

If I delete/rename the file d3d8.dll, the blue cloud glitch changes to black screens,

You must have heard it a few times, but: precisely the reason why a lot of people just won't go to Win10.
Backwards compatibility is a very low priority in as OS that's supposed to be the last Windows.

To make matters worse, my Win10 install refuses to update past 1809. So if there's new and exciting breakage, then I can't reproduce it. Don't know when I'll find the time and motivation for yet another Windows reinstall.

All I can suggest is to try either dgVoodoo or a newer version of the ReShade wrapper DLL. See lowenz' posts above.

Btw. the spinning cursor is sort-of normal on loading screens, but you only get it in windowed mode and only if you click on the window. Probably to do with (lack of) Windows message processing. Sometimes it even triggers an error dialogue.

I went from WinXP to Win10, that was a shock. But there is no safe choice using unsupported Windows versions if you don't isolate a gaming machine 100% from the internet (and never install anything new). Gluck to those in a year when 400 new Win7 exploits are all over the internet. That is why I "bit the bullet" and went with Win10. It is mostly a 60% headache. But I refuse to have to learn an entire new OS like Linux & redo 15 yrs of programs on it.

I installed T3 with SU on a virtual machine with Win10 (not fully up to date) & I get no cursor during loading screens just like it was before. But my real machine does it now. I even copied the d3d8 from the VM to my real install to see if it was corrupt - no change.

I could try a wrapper, but at the moment, I am really lazy. Maybe I will try it later.

The version of Win10 on my virtual machine (where T3 works fine) is 1903, the version on my real machine (where I have the issues) is 1909.

    1903=1909 for kernel level components.

So this is a head scratcher. It works now. I have no idea why. The thing that I did that preceded it working again makes no sense that it would fix it.

I updated my virtual machine to Win10 1909. I installed T3 with the option to use the hacked d3d8. I used this option on my main machine install (d3d8.dll version 1.9.2.0 which is installed with the latest SU). I set all the install paths to be custom and installed them in the thief 3 game folder like I did with my main machine. I then played in on the VM. It all worked fine. I never could duplicate the error I had on my main machine. I then copied the Thief 3 game folder from my VM to a separate drive on my main machine (a drive other than the buggy install). I ran the game from that new folder. It all looked good, new game, loading old games, etc.

OK. So, I ran the "bugged" version of Thief 3 - and it flippin' worked. WTF, lol. If it bugs out again, I will post. I have had similar issues with systempacks when modding Gothic 2. I have had the game run perfect only to at some random time glitch, then I have to reinstall the sytempack - and everything is fine.

So many issues with pre Dx 9.0c on Win10 it is frustrating.

I think Win10 was for some reason flipping out about the fullscreen issue that is known to exist with D3D8. When the errors were happening, & the cursor was visable, my mouse was unlocked to the T3 game screen & I could move it to my second monitor. Once the savegame was loaded, the mouse locked to the T3 game screen. That never happened before. Just to give more options over at Vogons they have been dealing with the Win10 fullscreen issue for a while now. See the following if lowenz fixes do not work for Thief 3 or another game.

The issue is back. I noticed the spinning cursor reappeared when in fullscreen @ the loading screen for Oblivion. I then ran T3 again, and sure enough, the error is back. It persisted through a computer reboot. Since the issue is random, the fix now is to run the T3 executables in WinXP compatibility mode. That fixed the issue. The issue returns when I take compatibility mode off.

Several older games have been made to work with Dx11 by fans. Can this be done with T3 also? It seems the D3D8 to 9 .dll is not working 100% anymore.
