Darkness Falls: A Dire Venture (Oct. 25, 2005)

The first public version of Darkness Falls: A Dire Venture is ready for release! It has been fun, sometimes frustrating, but still fun to work on this sequel and I hope you enjoy the fruits of my labors. I also want to thank all my beta testers for a job well done. Couldn't have done it without you It would not have been the same without your constructive criticism and encouragement!

The mission can be downloaded from these locations:

p.s: Those of you who are still playing the beta and meant to e-mail me with a report please don't hesitate despite this release!

Nice mission. I got the feeling at the end that there might be a sequel or maybe there should be; I'm hoping that there will be. I felt that it was very much a thiefy feeling mission which is good and also this is probably the least buggy, if any, fm I've played in a while. Great job! Now go and make another!

I wasn't able to finish the mission, the loot objective didn't check, even though I got more than enough. So I'd like to ask if the mission ends
    spoiler:
with getting to the gate using the warden's key, after visiting the keeper library. If yes, is there another mission incoming, that will finish the story ? Or did I miss something obvious ?

Hmm it should check. On which difficulty setting did you play when this occured? I will look into it, nevertheless.

    spoiler:
Yes, there are plans for a new mission. A Dire Venture is merely the second part in a series.

I played it on medium, no sweat.
I don't think it's such a big issue, it isn't that important objective anyway (for me at least...).
BTW it was a great mission, both design and gameplay were really good. Looking forward to the third part

Well done Hidden in shadows ! good mission with well suited music and disturbing atmosphere. I've nearly finished but haven't found all the loot yet (playing on expert).

    spoiler:
Only found 2292/2800. Went on top of nearly all the crates, found the rope arrows, the water ones, the flares and some nuggets. I wonder where is the rest of the loot though. Couldn't find any in the keepers' library. Is there any there ?

Tell me, you seem to have an immoderate love for crates !

    Immoderate love for crates? nah
    there aren't that many around

    spoiler:
There's no loot in the library section itself. You have to keep looking. I take it you have found what lay in one of the yards?

Nice one. In general, I'm not particularly fond of warehouses as an environment, but I quite liked this one. Very well written readables, too.

Btw, a minor nitpick. The transition between the indoors and outdoors ambient (a pretty good one, btw, very atmospheric) is very abrupt. I remember seeing an article on the DromEd Central some time ago on how to smooth it out a bit; you may want to check it out if you're going to do an update. [Edit: yeah, here it is]

WOW! I don't agree at all with you about the architecture. All the textures worked really well, and fit the over all look of the mission. I felt like I was in one unique city. Although it is rather a short mission, things like gates, and over head pillars and such made each area different. If your looking at the floor while playing this mission your going to miss alot of little touches above..

    Hidden in Shadows

    spoiler:
Yes, I've found all the loot in the yard outside. I also went to the warden's appartment, climbed up the ladder and found the loot there. Going to have another look for the rest now.

If my search proves fruitless, I'll cry for help

Well, good news ! I finally found everything and the loot objective did tick off for me on expert.

H.I.S.: Played it, loved it! Can you please do a city-based mission next? Your background architecture was fantastic and I just wanted to get up there & explore. Thanks for the fun fm!!

    Glad you liked it
I don't think the next mission in the series will be situated in the city but I could always do a standalone mission if I have the time

I absolutely loved the atmosphere of this one....thought
    spoiler:
i was going to be left hanging as to why i was hearing the voices and the music was so intense, and then finally, the keepers came through
i remain very short of loot, but since i am not a loot nut, i will consider this one done!!! wish it had been longer!!! really really really liked it!

    Still can't find 8th secret!

Good to see that you have released this FM. When I helped beta test it I was hoping it would come out very soon. I love these quick small missions beacause you can keep doing them until you get everything while it's still fresh in your memory.

The extended areas are a big improvement over the beta.
    spoiler:
(Might put some creepies in the library area if you do an update?? - I'ts a bit bare of action.)

Still stuck on finding that last secret just like in the beta! I'll keep looking.

Great little map - keep up the good work.

    Secrets?

Have anyone found all the secrets? I've only found 6.
    Could we have a list?

This is one of those fms that gives me a shiver of pleasure within the first two minutes of play.
Thought I was done until I did the stats and find I'm a few secrets short, so back to the warehouses.
    My questions are:
    1. Is there any way to turn off the blooming alarm?
    2. In the warden's warehouse, what is the wall lever in the control room for?

As it is now the alarm can't be turned off. I've had plans to add that function, though. What comes to the wall lever it should control the control room light. I guess it got forgotten somehow during testing. It's not a big thing to fix if I just open up dromed and add the links. If and when I decide to update the mission this will be fixed along with other things.

Aah the notorious eight secret. Maybe someone will post how to find it

    -teemac-

it was nice to have you on the team. Glad you liked the improvements.

    Dire Venture

I'm just now getting into this mission. In addition to navigating through a forest of crates, I've heard young female spooky disembodied voices speaking. Is this place haunted? Is there a situation that I'm to participate in? How do I get into this place or am I not supposed to do that?
