    Mini-FM (Thief 2) Contest - the results!

The Glyph of Hammer and Trowel Contest
    (Thief 2 FMs)

On the occasion of the release of the Polish version of TDS (Thief: Złowieszcze cienie), I have organised three contests for Polish Thief fans: the contest for the Glyph of Knowledge, the Glyph of Sight and the Glyph of Hammer and Trowel. The first and second contests are already over. Some of you have somewhat taken part in the second contest, which was about recognising graphical elements from the Thief games. The third contest (a DromEd one) is still running.

The contestants were to, within a manner of days, create a small mission accordance to rules I have posted. The only real catch was that the map had to have swimmable water. This is something of a homage to an element of the gameplay I have missed the most in TDS.

The mini-missions are now ready, and are available for download here.

The Citadel of Wrath-Amon (2,21 MB)
The First Day of Winter (7,88 MB)
    A Winter Holiday (5,13 MB)

The contests take place at the Polish Thief forum. However, I invite TTLG members to join in the fun! We shall pick the winner of the contest who will get a copy of the Polish version of TDS. If you want to take part in the voting, download all the contest missions, play them and vote! Polish voting will be finished December 16, 2005 (today). TTLG voting will be finished December 18, 2005. I know, I know... two days only... But there are only three very small missions to play... And I want the winner to get the prize before Christmas.

On this page (also in English), you will find the voting form and rules. The following aspects of the missions are to be judged:

    1) Architecture
    2) Special Effects
    3) Sound
    4) General Impressions

There are no other categories (story etc.), because I thought that the contestants will not be able to figure something interesting out within a few days. Now I see that I was wrong.

The scale is from 1 (worst) to 5 (best) in each category. Who gets the most points, wins. If you encounter problems using the voting form, you can send me a private message with your votes.

The authors (anonymous) had only a few days to whip something up, so don't be too harsh. I think they did a great job:

Please, try to finish the missions, because they are much more complicated than they seem to be at the beginning...

If you find any problems (also technical) with FMs, post here. If you want to comment, share the words of praise or disgust with other players, feel free to post in this thread.

Special thanks to van Hellsing for translating all the missions and PiotrS for... everything else.

The zip file is corrupt for The Citadel of Wrath-Amon (2,21 MB). It only downloads about 40kb of info.

These FM's look quite good. The First Day of Winter starts well.... on a cursory look.

Okay, I'm going to complain about the "First Day of Winter".

First of all, this mission looks gorgeous. However, it has one of the most idiotic "no kill" objectives I have ever seen. It has no justification -- its totaly arbitrary and I hate it when its like that.

    Lets see:

    spoiler:

You have no blackjack. But you do have a sword and arrows. Several armed theives have broken into your house and assaulted your wife.

And you're not supposed to kill anybody?

    Ridiculous.

If you're going to impose such a rule at *least* give me a blackjack.

Are you still having this problem? It downloads fine for me...

The author gave you a blackjack! Hint:
    spoiler:
Try to enter the house without being noticed. And that means you should not use doors. Look around for some container. If thieves notice you, just run away and wait for them to calm down, and later... strike! Don't try to drawn them! You'll need their bodies. BTW, don't forget to read the ringleader's scroll.

Garrett is an exemplary husband now and is returning from some pub,it's strange to think that he should take his blackjack everywhere. But be sure, he's hiding it somewhere at hand...
one of the most idiotic "no kill" objectives
There are many better ways to punish thugs than killing them.

btw: I didn't like any "no kills" when I was ...a novice taffer

Ok. I guess I'll go back in with more patience this time. Its just that its very difficult to get in without being seen. There are lights everywhere (and no water arrows), and wooden floors. Even coming in through the backdoor is hard cause a dude is right there ready to catch you. Suppose I should try harder.

I'll admit that I am not fond of being forced to ghost. I like to BJ most of the time. But if I have to, I can do it. I have always played this way since 2002. I'm not really a novice, but I'm not "hardcore" either. I like to play Thief to explore scenery and have adventure.

So I don't like my gameplay being boxed in for no reason. And I've never bought the whole "you're a thief, not a muderer" thing. Of course I won't kill for no reason, I prefer to BJ. But if I am backed into a corner against an armed advesary, I should be able to defend myself without ending the mission.

    Another hint:
    spoiler:
Don't use doors. Use roof. Climb the tree.

BTW, getting rid of your adversaries is just the beginning of your troubles. This missions is not as small as it might seem...

Exactly. Midnight of YOUR time. It might be different for everyone. No problem. I'll accept all votes.

    Family and Thugs!!!

Playing "the first day of winter"...looks great. I found the entrance to the cave, but as soon as I went down the ladder I failed to put my family and thugs where they belong. I picked up the family members and place them in bed. The thugs I placed in the attic. Where exactly do they need to go?

I suppose you read ringleader's scroll... It's important so that your objectives will become clear.

Back on topic: where would you place knocked out enemies in your house?

    Small hint:
    spoiler:
    Look in the basement.

    Big hint:
    spoiler:
Use te key you found upstairs to finish the job.

BTW, if you can not pick the body up, it means you placed it properly. So if you can't pick up your family from beds in the attic, you've done what you were supposed to.

So... everyone is playing The First Day of Winter? What about other FMs?

The First Day of Winter has a problem with an objective that hasn't been translated to english!
    spoiler:
I found the cavern with the 3 chests, a few coins and a treasure map. Picked up the treasure map and got a new objective but that objective hasn't been translated! So what am i supposed to do?

Ooops... Sorry. We did not have the time to test the translation...

"No, to pochwal sie zonie swoim znaleziskiem" means "Show this discovery to your wife".

    Ahh, thank you, mission finished.

Maybe you can help me with 'A Winter Holiday'. I got stuck on that one earlier today and instead played the other two.
    spoiler:
I found the medallion and climbed onto the roof and got the snowballs, but that's it! I can't figure out how to get in....

    Small hint:
Where people often leave the key for their relatives?

    Big hint:
The key is over the doors.

Where would you leave a key for someone you expect?

    It's above the door.

I've just tried to download 'The First Day of Winter' four times, but each time it stops at 2.8mb, and the archive is corrupt.
The download window also reports the size as being 2.8mb when I start the download.
    Any ideas?

Hmmm... I'll see what happens. Perhaps you were downloading the old file, and we put the new version on-line an hour ago (with all objectives translated).

EDIT: It works fine for me. Can you try to download it again?

Unfortunately, Jason is away and I can't upload these missions to his site.
