First Day of Winter FM 2006.01.09

Thought we could use a dedicated thread for this level.

Sooo . . . is there a way to actually play this level? Or is the object to just get killed over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and?

WOW! All the joy and fun of trying to sneak past guards with ESP! I think I'd better delete this one from my Hard Drive for the sanity of my own mind and the protection of my PC (lest I hurl it out the window)!

Does that mean I'm not the only having serious trouble trying to bj the one upstairs.

    Have you
    spoiler:
climbed the tree and got in through the roof?

If not then you may struggle. I had no trouble with them.

You know you have too much time on your hands your hands your hands your hands your hands ....

This is a very well made level.

I managed the guy upstairs after a few tries, but then I get stuck on the next objective.

I'm disinclined to put spoiler tags around, so I'll just say that it's quite difficult to discover the value of Garrett's new home after the other objectives have been completed.

There's a Black Jack somewhere? Where?

    Made it eventually. taffedinthehead
    spoiler:
if you climb the tree (slightly tricky) and get onto the roof you'll see an entrance on the other side of the eaves, once you get in there, they hear you and the one upstairs goes downstairs, which gives you time to sneak out of the room along to the left where you'll find your favourite bj

Once I'd managed to bj the guy upstairs, the rest was much easier.

Blackjack is in the toolbox in the attic. There is even more than blackjack...
And it's really hard to win with the burglars if you come in home the ways they expect you to come... If you find another way then this mission is quite easy...

    EDIT:_____________
I'm making new, improved, enlarged and bug fixed version of this mission. I asked Jason to remove it from the server until version 2.0 appears... So, please wait a while...

I tried jumping off the supposedly climbable tree a few times only to end up a thief pancake . It is much easier to run past the thieves . The objective for the thieves was just plain silly and had no hint whatsoever . Who in the name of god would place thieves in some locked closet in the same house as their sleeping family? If you made the wrong choice and put them down the hole , there is no recourse . The mission itself is beautiful and the ending was great , but it could have been much better had the objectives been thought out better .

It certainly required a lot of inspired guess work but I'm not sure how the author could give hints without telling the player exactly what to do.

OK - easy level afterall - when you have someone walking you throug it step-by-step. I never would have considered
    spoiler:
climbing the tree - not only was there no hint about it, it didn't really even stand out from the rest of the environment.
I don't know how long it would have taken me to think of
    spoiler:
putting the thieves in the basement.
And, had I not already read about
    spoiler:
giving the map to the wife,
I would never have thought of that either since
    spoiler:
    she isn't frobbable.

The level certainly looked cool, though. And I've always liked the idea of
    spoiler:
finding a whole secret world underneath your house that was always there but you didn't know it. The whole "wife/zombie" thing was a little silly, though.

Personally, out of the three Glyph contest entrants, I'd have voted for Winter's Holiday.

On Expert, is there a limit to number of BJ? I KO'd 2 and when I KO the 3rd, the game ends. Is that part of the bug fix for version 2.0 or should we be told of a BJ limit on Expert?

Ok, I guess I need some help on this one. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or encountered a bug. With the thieves, at first I tried
    spoiler:
throwing them in the river. That failed the mission because I'm playing on expert and am not allowed to kill. Then I came to this thread, and from what I've read, I thought I was supposed to put them in the small closet under the stairs in the basement. I've done this, and even locked the door with the key afterwards, but this objective does not check off.
I cannot proceed because when I go down the ladder, the mission fails for not completing the "Find a good place for these crooks" objective.
Can someone please tell me if I'm missing something?

Other than this, I like the plot, and can't wait to see what's "down there".

I just visited thiefmissions.com to download this FM, but it says the file is unavailable; 'downloads of this file have been disabled by the administrator'. Is there another site where I can download it?

The author requested that it be removed. Sorry.

Really! Did he give a reason why?

Albert: There should not be a blackjack minimum - are you sure you didn't accidentally kill him somehow?

Bass: Are you sure all THREE thieves are in the room together? Make sure the door is shutting all the way closed, because it locks in whatever position it is in.

Thanks taffedinthehead! Yep, I'd forgotten about the first one I wacked and threw in the upstairs entry room.

But, now I'm REEEELY feeling dumb! I'm in the
    spoiler:
caves and water (which are very pretty and well made BTW), and I seem to be at a dead end. I haven't found any loot nor any other area to explore. I've swum up into to a large circular cave with crystals on the ceiling, but no loot and no way out that I can see. I even found a "secret area" (again, with no loot). I've tried throwing around every rock I see too, hoping to reveal something, but no luck.

    Someone please help!

Sorry for removing the mission from 'thiefmissions.com' - mission need to be improved. Yes, i know - it shouldn't even be there before improving but sometimes small misunderstandings happen... But you know - patience is the virtue...

Bassmanret: Lantern can be useful for the caves.

Abert: there's no knockout limit. There is only 'no kills' objective - is that the one which turns to "failed"?
    It sounds like another bug...

Pinkdot: No need to apologize - we taffers complain alot about things we've never even attempted to do ourselves, like making an FM. You have a fantastic start here (and all the more impressive being a first attempt). As someone else mentioned, there are a ton of great touches here, like the accumulating snow effect, great lighting, and intriguing gameplay. I'm looking forward to your tweaked version!

Bassmanret: There is only one area in the caves you'll need to find - you'll know it when you find it - and when you do, look VERY closely ALL OVER that area to find what you need. If you need a hint:

    spoiler:
    Be sure to get wet

Well I really liked it. I had trouble at the end but that's because i forgot to read something.

I look forward to seeing the idea developed further.

I think you mixed up "The First Day of Winter" and "Winter Holiday". There's no tower in "The First Day...". And there's no need to climb anywhere in "Winter Holiday".

Pink, isn't it strongly adviced to climb a tree in your mission?
