New SS2-mission from Christine: Shocking Ruins

    Hello Shockers and Shocklings,

here's a new fanmission from Christine:

    http://thiefmissions.com/info.cgi?m=ShockingRuins

    Attention:

This mission breaks ranks a little bit...
It's a conversion of 'Bloody Ruins' from Thief 2. Before you download it please read the following:

    • if you already know 'Bloody Ruins' then this is a must-play for you (and leave the loot alone, you can't pick it up anyway)
    • if you expect a mission like 'Ponterbee' with a lot of technic futuristic stuff, leave this mission alone. There are no upgrade terminals and such stuff in this mission. And this is only a mission, not a campaign - so it's much smaller
    • but if you are liberal-minded and always hungry to play an eye-teasing fun mission - why are you still reading this? Head to thiefmission.com...

Many thanks to all our great voice-actors and to Nightwalker for her help with the english translation...

I knew you were converting a Thief 2 mission to SS2! Awesome! I'll have to download both!

I just finished playing this mission. I finally beat Bloody Ruins for T2 not too long ago, so it was still fairly fresh in my mind. Maybe it's just because I really loved the plotline in the Lady Lotti series, but I was sad to see there was no way of reading the old books. Don't suppose there's a chance that a future update could include a software that, when found, enables the soldier to frob the books and hear them read aloud? I'd say make them frobbable with a conversation, but I doubt ShockEd has them.

But the log by Marwin . . . oh god, did that ever make my day. I just about keeled over laughing, and I think the popcorn I was munching on when I was listening to it is still lodged in my lungs. I'm flying, woo hoo! And going into this mission I was afflicted with the 'my FM is 2 crash fixes from being in beta' blues. Didn't think I could be cheered up much, but the rat on a wrench recipe did me in early on. Hell, I loved all the logs, but those two stood out as my favorites.

Everything seems good and solid. The only thing that seemed a little off was the wooden textures seemed to sound like carpet textures, but I only noticed that in the beginning of the mission, and promptly forgot about it.

It was a good time running around blasting the baddies to bits, shotgun to the fire elementals and assault rifle to the saurians was quite effective. It was pretty funny, I was blasting the saurians with the AR on single fire mode, screaming various obscenities at them, when I ran out of ammo. Very true to what I would do in real life, I threw down the assault rifle in anger, before I realized I really did have more ammo. I promptly dove into a tunnel for safety. I had to break down and use the rapier to get back to it and get back to murdering.

I had a total blast, nice way to spend a badly needed night away from DromEd.

How was this mission ported into SS2? Was the brushwork done from scratch, or is it possible to open a T2 mission in ShockEd? I seem to remember trying this before, but every attempt ended in failure.

I opend 'Bloody Ruins' in Dromed, saved all the terrain brushes as Multibrush. Than I opend ShockEd and load the Mulitbrush in a new Mission. It only works with the changed Shock.cfg

I tried to make the books frobable, using the textes for the info computer. But the textes from Bloody Ruins were much too long for this.

Awesome mission! I loved the ending; it had that "You knew it was going to end like this, didn't you?" ring to it, but was in no way predictable or boring! And yes, I enjoyed the Marwin and rat-on-a-wrench logs also! Another quality product from Christine and co.!

Ah, interesting! I wonder how many other Thief FMs would work in SS2 . . . I keep thinking of Deep Trouble 1+2. If I knew a thing about ShockEd, I'd probably try it for kicks, those missions would fit beautifully in SS2.

I completely forgot about the info computers. I cracked open the Bloody Ruins archive, and yeah, they wouldn't fit without some heavy editing. I guess that's why my knee jerk reaction was working them into logs somehow.

Man, I don't know how that log could've been any better. I swear you almost did the *TNT is hyper RUN FOR YOUR LIFE* giggle, that was the icing on the cake. I didn't even realize the log was yours right away, you were trying to hide your accent, weren't you?

Thank you for the compliment... that's music to my ears!
Hell, your log was music to my ears too.

So, Christine . . . have any other plans for SS2 FMs in the works, or are you taking a break for now?

I was taking a break and played Anachronox, while Dinksmallwood was busy with the English translation and the voice files for Shocking Ruins. Now I just started a new mission for SS2

My god. You have to have released a good 15 missions by now, in addition to Ponterbee Station . . . I get this funny feeling that DromEd likes you. Is your next project the sequel to Ponterbee? *crosses fingers* I just replayed it again tonight, I'm not addicted, honestly!

Just finished playing it and I just have to say a big THANKYOU for making this FM. The FM BREATHES professionalism from the word go. The logs were very well done also + the overall layout and textures used throughout was excellent.

It truelly gives you a feeling of sortof being in Thief and sortof being in System Shock 2 at the same time. Shame the books weren`t readable though. The final cutscene was very well done also.

    *Ponterbee Station possible spoilers below*

Gotta try the Ruins after finishing Ponterbee Station.

I have to say that Ponterbee Station is so much fun, I´m addicted. Finally a challenge, fighting the cyborg assassins on deck 5 is a challenge with low AGI and the Wrench. I have had to go crazy with a gun once because I got swarmed by two cyborg assassins and a grenade hybrid.

Great mission, and I finally found the card for a door on deck 1 that I was looking for in crew quarters.

And the voice acting is very well done, but a few people seem to have lacked hardware to sample their voice the quality style. Which of course is just a minor thing that is barely worth mentioning.

Did you voice act in this mission TNT? I don´t know why but I, for some strange reason, thought of you when I listened to the log where the girl is saying that her resaults of bio mass research made no sense, you find this log on deck 2.

She did, and her photo is in a couple of the profiles too.

That's her. Also, remember the crew member on the colony who was welcoming one of the other members? The one that said she was going to activate the UNN bots? Wherever you find a picture of her, you find her voice.

The Unreal engine just hates my computers in general, maybe it's sexist? I'll only ever work with DromEd. I really like it, it's been curbing my urge to run out and buy model cars for the sake of building something, at least.

    yes
YAY! Oh man, this is a good day, I may have even found the reason my FM is keeling over dead.

Yup, that was me. I was trying to keep my voice relatively monotone, but I slipped up big time in that log's ending. (My natural voice flucuates more than a guy who fell and landed on one leg on either side of a spike fence. It sounded wrong for that character, but if I remember right, that was the last log I did that day, so I got lazy. )

Hold on -- that wasn't me. I sent in multiple pictures to make up for the fact that some people sent in none. 2 of my logs were on Med/Sci, 1 on Rec, and that was it.

This mission is totally amazing. I guess I will get that Thief game just to get more of these Christine FMs.

I have a hard time to find the golden bracelet. Can someone please gimme a tiny hint?
