Thread: Freebies for everyone!

Don't forget BYOND, it may be 2D and kinda low-end, but the games are free, it comes with its own SDK package, and games can be made either online or single-player (tho single player requires a bit of code work).

It's where I learned some of the basics of game design (a friend gave me some of his source when I told him I had an interest). They may not be the best out there, but they're free.

For everyone that loves the Heroes of Might and Magic gameplay:

    http://www.heroeswm.com

Heroes of War and Money. A very well done free game. You are a hero who can battle other heroes with your armies. You can choose up to 7 factions (knights, elfs, wizards, necromancers, demons, dark elfs, barbarians). You can fight in 1vs 1 duels or complex batles like 2vs2 or 3vs3 with "everyone against everyone" or "even team" mode.

By the way, I´m playing there with the name "Radamantos" (dark elf).

    In praise of GameTap

Yeah, it's been mentioned before, but I only got around to trying it out a few days ago. Just in case anyone else has neglected to check it out so far, GameTap is your number 1 stop for freebies.

Just sign up and play, for free:
    Psychonauts
    Tomb Raider: Legend
    Commandos 3
    Colin McRae 2005
    Second Sight
    Blood Omen 2
    BloodyRayne
    Rogue Trooper
    Thief: Deadly Shadows
    Daikatana (omg)
    Hitman 1 & 2
    Jaws Unleashed
    realMYST

Plus tons of golden oldies like Street Fighter 2, Metal Slug 2, King of Fighters 96, Final Fight, Cannon Fodder, Rampage, etc. There are also indie-games being distributed through this thing. I'm playing one called Mr. Robot right now which is a platformer/RPG/Adventure thingy with a pretty engaging storyline.

And, yes, it's all totally free. Full versions. No spyware or shit that I know of. Legit. You do have to watch a small commercial at the start of each game though. Usualy for Honda. There's also a Gold Membership option($60/year, only available in America/Canada. Dammit.) which removes the ads and gives you tons more games. The Sam & Max episodes e.g. get released for free on GameTap Gold. And a few new games like Jericho and Turning Point are on there.

Yeah, gametap is somehwat similar to steam.. funny thing is, steam offers thief deadly shadows, but you have to pay. (actually, im surprised gametap would offer that game for free but i guess it makes sense considering ion storm went out of business like LGS did) Of course steam doesn't ahve any free full games except trackmania nations? anybody know?

Not really, since you don't own a license for any of the games with GameTap. If you subscribe, you can play their whole catalog from the get-go, but if you ever unsubscribe, you can't play anything but the free stuff. It was nice while I was using it, but I ran out of stuff to play after a while. I might sign back up for a month to play the new Sam & Max games, but I was hoping they were going to get Penumbra: Black Plague first.

    Crayon Physics (original)

    Crayon Physics @ Filefront.com

I've not seen this mentioned, found through the wiki. Draw a square, circle, triangle (your choice) and roll the ball towards the yellow star. Very simple although quite unique. The main site here shows an upcoming deluxe version not released as of yet (watch the video). Only 5mb download, no installer.

    I'm definitely checking this out.

I've also found a new title for the rest of you: Stramash. You can find downloads here: the latest version as of this post is TD3.zip, with more likely to follow as time passes.

(Oh, and why hasn't the first post in this thread been updated with all the new links we've been throwing in?)

    That's still 'abandonware' I'd think.

Possibly, although the fansite owner is quite confident...

All content on this site belongs to alrd (founder & admin), send questions to tfscottish@gmail.com.
(Game classed as abandonware and does not require Lucasarts permission to use images or names from the game, therefore all the game-related content on this site does not belong to anyone unless Lucasarts takes back their rights.)
If mods decide it's against forum policy link such games, they know what to do.

They already did, by saying 'no abandonware please' on the opening post. And that statement is pure junk, sadly. No permission to use Star Wars and Indy content? Really?

Copyright does not work the way those guys think it does. It hasn't been 75 (more in some places) years since those games were released.

Trademarks would be closer, but as long as the owner tries to protect a trademark there's no chance there either. And both those franchises are very agressively protected.

There is no generic "if it hasn't been supported by the developer for <x> years/the developer went away then it's free"-clause connected to software. Generic abandonware is just as illegal as a warez version of Halo 3.

Freeware, Public Domain and similar licences have to be explicitly used by the owner of the software.

Whether there's anyone willing or capable of pursuing the copyrighted software is a different matter. Abandonware is illegal and banned from this thread.

Thanks for lesson dude, I've heard this magical formula many times before and in fact, I had few classes in IP law. I just COULDN'T RESIST the voice of that anarchist leprechaun within me for a moment.

Wow! Nice! Steam still has you paying for it!

    @dethtoll: hey watch it asshole.

But yeah, now that it is free, ill have to play it sometime. I'm so behind on LGS games..... Beat thief 1 like one time I think, never beat thief 2 cuz i couldnt figure out the last level, and ive never even played deus ex, except maybe invisible war but that's not the original. And I still need to beat System Shock 2.

How can you have a name like sNeaksieGarrett and not have finished Thief 2 or played Thief 1 only once?

So now your going to insult me huh?

Look, you have to realize how young i am, and the fact that I play other games... i've done more bafford's manor playing and dromeding than beating thief. [lol] Come on, do you play thief all the way through many times? One of these days I'll probably do it. Like I said, i couldn't beat thief 2 because i couldn't figure out the last level. And that was years ago. So I was close.

Anyway, that's pretty awesome that GameTap would do that. I assume they get permission from copyright holders to put games up for free? Otherwise, I dunno how they can get away with that.

I played the Psi-Ops demo (for X-Box) back in the day. Like Second Sight, but better, is how I would describe it.

A nice Flash game. Slightly like Portal.
